San Giorgio Maggiore at dusk W1768hand painted reproduction

The island of San Giorgio Maggiore appears as a dark strip between the lagoon and an incandescent sky. The campanile, the dome and the monastery buildings are not described by fixed contours: they are silhouetted in a purple backlight, while the orange, pink and red of the sunset extend into broad reflections on the water.

Look at the work

A Venetian sunset where architecture becomes a silhouette between sky and lagoon

Monet places the horizon very low and reserves most of the canvas for the sky. The line of the island stretches from left to right, interrupted by the vertical of the campanile. On the right, the dome of Santa Maria della Salute and the entrance to the Grand Canal remain barely perceptible in the light.

The light yellow in the center takes on coral and carmine before joining the blues and purples of the edges. In the lagoon, the same tones descend in longer vertical touches. Water is therefore not a second setting: it amplifies the sky and gives the setting sun its depth.

The city is reduced to a silhouette, but this economy of design makes the circulation of light between the sky, the island and the water even more sensitive.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A viewpoint taken from the southeastern tip of Venice

The Museum Wales notice precisely identifies the view: the monastery island of San Giorgio is observed from the southeastern end of the city. This framing explains the almost frontal alignment of the shore and the very discreet presence of the Salute on the right.

02

Evening walks in November 1908

At the end of November, Monet and Alice go on gondola rides every evening to watch the sunsets. This version belongs to the series dedicated to San Giorgio, but it is distinguished by the orange-red intensity of its sky and the sharpness of the central reflection.

03

A dark figure that never turns black

The monastery mixes blue, purple, brown and deep red. The lighter touches around the roofs prevent the mass from closing. For faithful reproduction, the backlight must remain colored and breathe in contact with the sky.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 3,200 × 2,272 px. It comes from the CC0 file provided by the Museum Wales, brought back from 4,000 px wide into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A low horizon dominated by the vertical of the campanile

The horizontal line of San Giorgio stabilizes the composition, while the campanile leads the eye towards the brightest area. Its slight decentering avoids too solemn symmetry.

Color02

Solar orange, coral pink and lagoon purple

Warm colors are not placed on a neutral background: they directly encounter blues and mauves. This juxtaposition gives the sunset a brighter vibration than a simple gradient.

Matter03

Longer touches in the water than in the sky

The sky is constructed by flexible and superimposed passages. The reflections lengthen vertically, break around the silhouette and give the lagoon a moving material without creating waves.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern exactly San Giorgio Maggiore, Twilight from the Museum Wales, inventory NMW A 2485 and catalog Wildenstein 1768.

Identification01

Cardiff NMW A 2485, W1768

This oil on canvas from 1908 measures 65.2 × 92.4 cm. Museum Wales keeps it at the National Museum Cardiff and identifies it under the number NMW A 2485.

Acquisition02

Purchased directly from the 1912 exhibition

Gwendoline Davies acquired the painting from the Parisian exhibition of Monet's Venice Views in 1912. The work then entered the Welsh national collections with her bequest of 1952.

Subject03

San Giorgio, the Salute and the entrance to the Grand Canal

The museum specifies that the monastery occupies the center, while the dome of Santa Maria della Salute and the mouth of the Grand Canal appear faintly on the right.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of Cardiff, NMW A 2485 and Wildenstein 1768
  • The original ratio of 65.2 × 92.4 cm and the horizon kept very low
  • The purple backlight kept colorful, without uniform black
  • The vertical orange-red reflections extended into the lagoon

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Burnt orange, coral pink, deep purple, lagoon blue and ivory yellow give this reproduction a warm presence. The horizontal format naturally finds its place above a sofa or sideboard, with a dark frame which reinforces the silhouette or a light wood which lets the sky shine.
