Nature observed as a living surface
Van Gogh places the viewer almost at ground level in a public garden in Asnières. Instead of ordering the landscape around a sky and a horizon, it fills the canvas with vegetation: the tufts radiate, a pink massif crosses the center and six butterflies appear between the leaves.
The keys change direction with each element. They become long and curved in the grass, short and tight in the flower bed, then light around the wings. This vocabulary of lines, nourished by impressionism, the neo-impressionism and Japanese prints, announces the more intense workmanship of the following years.
The subject fits in a corner of the garden, but the proximity, the cut framing and the variety of the touch transform this fragment into a complete landscape.

This painting is not limited to a dominant green: its richness comes from carefully differentiated directions, thicknesses and colors.

Framing without sky
The canvas is entirely occupied by the ground and vegetation. The clumps cut by the edges mentally extend the garden beyond the frame.

Butterflies are tiny but essential: their whites, yellows and reds punctuate the green and guide the gaze from one group of grasses to another.

Oriented keys
The lines follow the growth of the leaves, the curve of the tufts and the outline of the flowers. Their direction builds volumes without traditional modeling.

F460/JH1676 corresponds to the work today dated from the Parisian period, distinct from the Two White Butterflies F402 painted in Arles in 1889.
