Vincent van Gogh · Summer 1887 · Paris
Undergrowth, F306Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
At ground level, trunks, grasses and wild flowers form a sheet of yellow, green, red and blue touches. Van Gogh does not look for a deep view of the forest: he transforms the undergrowth into an almost continuous colored field.

Look at the work
The forest observed at grass level
The framing cuts the trees and reserves most of the canvas for the ground covered with leaves. The vertical trunks give some stable marks in a surface animated by thousands of small marks.
On the left, the bright yellows become denser around the trees; in the foreground, dark greens, reds and blues describe flowers, leaves and shadows without closed outlines.
Painted in Paris during the summer of 1887, this oil undergrowth on canvas of 32 × 46 cm is F306/JH1317. It is kept at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht under number 22123.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The painting testifies to Van Gogh's change of palette in Paris. Browns from his Dutch period gave way to light colors applied in dots, dashes and short hatching.
01
The trunks structure an abundant surface
Their verticals interrupt the multitude of touches of the ground and prevent the vegetation from becoming a simple abstract pattern.
02
Light is never united
Lemon yellow, ocher, pale green and pink mingle instead of forming large flat areas, giving the undergrowth a continuous vibration.
03
The foreground comes to the eye
The absence of a path and horizon places the viewer in front of nearby, dense and almost tactile vegetation.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The Centraal Museum presents this painting as a pivotal work from 1887: after his arrival in Paris, Van Gogh profoundly renewed his technique and his use of color.
Technique
Dots, dashes and colored hatching
The museum emphasizes that the pictorial field is entirely filled with small, lively touches that imitate the swirling of leaves and flowers.
Period
The Parisian metamorphosis
In contact with impressionism and neo-impressionism, Van Gogh clarified his palette and experimented with divided touches without adopting a strictly regular method.
Collection
Inventory number 22123
The work belongs to the Van Baaren Museum Foundation and is on display at the Centraal Museum in Utrecht.
The copy must preserve the density of the soil, the directional variety of small touches and the contrasts between vertical trunks, yellow areas and green shadows.
