Storm, coasts of Belle-Île W1116hand painted reproduction

Under a low sky, the Belle-Île Sea invades the canvas in white, gray and green waves. Several rocks barely emerge from the foam, while a dark needle stands in the foreground. Signed and dated Claude Monet 86, this oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 81.5 cm is kept at the Musée d'Orsay under the number RF 3163 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1116.

Look at the work

Storm dissolves border between ocean, foam and sky

The horizon line is high and almost erased by the spray. In the center, a chain of reefs reddened in places receives the waves from the front. The dark rocks at the bottom serve as the only fixed points in a surface dominated by movement.

Whites are never pure: they mix with pearl gray, blue, sea green and a few purples. The touches constantly change orientation, short around the rocks and longer in the swell layers.

Monet does not describe a single wave; it paints an entire field of forces where each key extends, contradicts or restarts the movement of the previous one.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An almost entirely maritime composition

The coast disappears from the framing. By removing any stable landmark, Monet places the viewer in front of the surge and focuses attention on the swell.

02

Rocks as measures of violence

Dark shapes appear small in front of masses of foam. Their resistance gives the waves their scale and makes the power of the Atlantic noticeable.

03

A unity of tone without monotony

Sky, sea spray and water share bluish grays, but differences in temperature and thickness keep each area readable.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single high-definition reference image was cropped at the edge of the canvas and then encoded into a real 3,000 × 2,408 px WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Keep the dark needle in the foreground

Its slightly off-center position and verticality are essential to anchor the composition of W1116.

Color02

Preserve the irregular rhythm of the foam

The whites must form discontinuous masses around the reefs, without becoming a repetitive or decorative pattern.

Matter03

Keep the purples and reds in the rock

These accents give substance to the reefs and prevent them from being reduced to black silhouettes.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents Tempête, Côtes de Belle-Île, oil on canvas from 1886, 65.4 × 81.5 cm, signed Claude Monet 86, inventory RF 3163 and catalog Wildenstein 1116.

Campaign01

Ten weeks on the wild coast of Belle-Île

Monet arrived in September 1886 for a planned stay of a few days. He stayed until the end of November to work in front of the cliffs and the changing sea.

Provenance02

From Boussod and Valadon to Gaston Migeon

The gallery probably acquired the artist's painting in July 1887. After the Dupuis collection, it belonged to the curator and collector Gaston Migeon.

National Collection03

The Gaston Migeon legacy accepted in 1932

The State accepted the work for the Louvre Museum, then it went through the Jeu de Paume before being assigned to the Musée d'Orsay in 1986.

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1116 version
  • The dark needle in the foreground
  • Foam-drowned reefs
  • The gray and green palette of the storm
