Look at the work
The village and its reflection occupy two worlds of color
The houses line the bank in a series of cream, pink and red facades. The church rises to the left of the center, its dark bell tower responding to the smaller points of architecture. Behind, the strips of fields rise up the hill in greens and ochres.
The Seine occupies almost the lower half. The shapes of the village lengthen without clarity, mixed with the blue of the sky and the browns of the bank. A thin green line marks the bank and separates reality from its reflection without breaking their chromatic continuity.
The reflection does not repeat Vétheuil: it transforms the houses, the trees and the hill into a second, more fluid construction.

Jacques Dubourg then Durand-Ruel
Jacques Dubourg bought the painting from Monet in October 1880; it passed to the Durand-Ruel gallery on January 9, 1882.

Felton Bequest, 1937
The National Gallery of Victoria acquired the work in 1937 through the Felton Legacy; it has since worn number 406-4.
