The railway in the light of the South
The foreground, almost empty, occupies more than half of the canvas. Its cream, pink and green touches form a diagonal that leads towards the wagons.
The train line is low and compact. A red chimney and vertical metal structure pierce the blue-green sky, giving the landscape industrial tension.
Painted in Arles in August 1888, this oil on canvas of approximately 46 × 51 cm is F446/JH1553. It bears the number 1996-K-112 at the Angladon Museum in Avignon.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh chooses neither a spectacular locomotive nor a lively station. It contrasts the long immobility of the wagons with almost deserted terrain, worked by rapid and luminous touches.

Red, ocher, brown and blue follow one another horizontally, punctuated by the wheels and inscriptions.
