The Knight in armor

Facing suffering humanity, a golden figure clutches his sword. Ambition and Compassion stand behind her: the fight is not shown, but the whole quest for happiness begins here.

Immediate response

Who is this knight?

The character is not neither Beethoven nor a named historical hero. The 1902 exhibition catalog identifies it as the Wohlgerüstete Starke, literally "the well-armed very". Weak and suffering humanity turns to him to undertake the quest for happiness in his name.

Behind the armor stand two allegorical women: Ambition, crowned, and Compassion, head bowed and hands clasped. They are the inner forces that push the knight to confront hostile powers before the arts and love bring final appeasement.

Vienna, April - June 1902

An exhibition designed as a total work

Klimt created the frieze for the fourteenth exhibition of the Viennese Secession, open from April 15 to June 27, 1902. Twenty-one artists, coordinated by Josef Hoffmann, organized architecture, painting, sculpture and music around a tribute to Beethoven.

In the center of the building was the monumental statue of Beethoven by Max Klinger. The frieze occupied the left side aisle; an opening allowed the sculpture to be seen from the painted cycle. The viewer therefore had to walk, look and connect the arts in space.

The exhibition was one of the great public successes of the Secession. Its scope goes beyond homage to the composer: it tests the ideal of Gesamtkunstwerk, the total artwork.

Six signs that build the knight

Real photo of the knight in armor in the room of the Beethoven Frieze in the Secession
Real photo of the knight in the current room. The metal surface combines painting, reliefs, gilding and inlays.
01

The closed body

The armor transforms the character into a vertical block. We see neither skin nor vulnerable bodily expression.

02

Bare head

He does not wear a helmet. His face remains human, attentive to supplications and turned towards the ordeal to come.

03

The still sword

The large blade is still vertical. Klimt represents the decision before the action, not a spectacular fight.

04

Looking to the right

It connects the left wall to the central wall where Typhaeus, the Gorgons and other hostile forces extend.

05

The Golden Surface

Metal and ornaments isolate the figure of naked humanity. Strength becomes a visible appearance.

06

Frontality

The body does not twist. Its stability responds to the inclined, kneeling and imploring gestures of the left group.

The starting point of the story

Suffering humanity demands a defender

A standing woman and a kneeling couple embody "the sufferings of weak humanity". Their nudity, thinness and outstretched arms contrast with the impenetrable surface of the armor.

The knight therefore does not derive his mission from a royal order. He receives a collective request. This organization gives the heroic motive a moral function: strength only has value if it responds to weakness.

An opposition of materials

On the left, the bodies are bare, pale and drawn by fragile contours. On the right, the knight is dense, brilliant, almost architectural. Klimt makes the gap between vulnerability and power felt before we even understand the allegorical program.

Two inner forces

Ambition and Compassion behind the armor

01

Ambition

The crowned figure embodies the momentum that pushes one to act, to overcome the present condition and to seek a form of victory. It gives the knight his upward tension.

02

Compassion

The woman with clasped hands and bowed head reminds for whom the fight must be undertaken. Without it, ambition could become a simple desire for power.

The knight is not only strong: he is set in motion by the difficult alliance of desire for accomplishment and concern for others.Reading the 1902 program

A force made of surface

Gold, reliefs and unusual materials

The frieze is not a traditional fresco. Klimt uses casein paint, coatings, graphite, gold leaf and glass applications, mother-of-pearl and other mortar materials. Armor becomes the ideal place to concentrate these effects.

The metal represented and the real metal merge. The light from the room activates the figure: the knight seems to change according to the visitor's movement, like a flat sculpture.

The beginning of the golden period

The Secession identifies the Beethoven Frieze as a turning point towards the famous golden period. In the knight, gold is not yet used to completely abolish volume: it transforms medieval armor into a modern, frontal and decorative sign.

A story on three walls

The quest for happiness in four movements

1 · Desire

Floating geniuses carry the desire for happiness like a continuous visual phrase.

2 · Decision

Suffering humanity solicits the knight, driven by Ambition and Compassion.

3 · Test

Typhaeus, Gorgons, Illness, Madness, Death, Lust and Rodent Grief block the way.

4 · Appeasement

Poetry then the Arts lead to the choir of paradise and the embracing couple.

Combat is elliptical: Klimt never shows the knight giving a sword blow. The confrontation exists in the sequence of walls, the gaze of the hero and the passage of the spectator from one scene to another.

Typhaeus Massive body of ape-like monster Brute force and chaos Blocks the central wall like a living mountain
Three Gorgons Naked women, sensual and disturbing contours Illness, Madness and Death Mix seduction and threat
Lust, Impudence, Intemperance Elongated and decorative bodies Desires without measure Divert the quest from its goal
Rodent grief Isolated figure, folded in on itself Inner suffering Transforms the enemy into a psychic state

Painting a symphony

Why Beethoven and Wagner are essential

The frieze program is based on the interpretation of the Ninth Symphony proposed by Richard Wagner in a text written in 1846 and published in 1871. Klimt translates this musical reading into a succession of states: aspiration, struggle, poetry, arts and joy.

The knight corresponds to the moment when aspiration must be transformed into action. He is therefore not the portrait of Beethoven, but a figure of the human will confronted with the obstacles of the world and of oneself.

"That kiss to the whole world"

The last wall responds to the final of the Ninth and theOde to joy from Schiller. The couple embracing in front of the choir of paradise gives a carnal form to the union promised after the ordeal.

The goal of the quest

Arts lead to embrace

Arts, choir of paradise and couple embraced in the finale of the Beethoven Frieze
The Right Wall: The Arts, the Choir of Heaven Angels and the Final Embrace. The quest begun before the knight ends in a golden space.

Happiness is not represented as a political conquest or a military trophy. It happens through Poetry, the Arts, the community of the choir and the union of the couple.

This is why the sword remains paradoxical. It prepares for a fight, but the ultimate resolution does not come from the weapon: it comes from the capacity of art to transform the ordeal into harmony.

From hardness to wrap

At first, the armor encloses the body in a vertical shell. At the end, gold forms a cosmic envelope around the couple made of flowers, suns and moons. The same material passes from defense to union.

Prepare for the Secession visit

The Beethoven Frieze is exhibited in the building for which it was created, but in an underground room built during the 1985 renovation. The route allows you to follow the three walls without reducing them to a series of isolated images.

The best starting point is the left wall: first observe the floating genies, then the kneeling bodies and the knight. Then turn to the hostile forces before joining Poetry, Arts and Embrace.

  • Allow time to walk through all three walls in order.
  • Compare the matte surface of the bodies to the shards of metal and mother-of-pearl.
  • Listen to the fourth movement of the Ninth offered on site.
  • Check times and possible closures on the official website.
