Klimt executives

At Gustav Klimt, the frame does not just protect a canvas. It can have a name, extend the gold, impose a rhythm, transform the painting into an object and connect the work to an entire architecture.

The frame is sometimes the last part of the painting - and sometimes its first sentence.

To understand Klimt frames, you have to abandon the idea of an accessory chosen after the fact by a framer. In several major works, the edge is thought of at the same time as the image. It fixes the distance from the wall, regulates the transition between painting and architecture and can even provide the title that the image refuses to give alone.

This attention corresponds to the program of the Viennese Secession: abolishing the hierarchy between "fine arts" and applied arts. Painting, metal, typography, furniture and scenography must form a coherent whole. The setting therefore becomes a place of collaboration between painter, craftsman and architect.

Short answer: not all frames visible today around a Klimt are by Klimt. On the other hand, some original documented frames - notably those of Pallas Athena and Judith I - were drawn by Gustav Klimt and executed by his brother Georg.

Before comparing

Four ways to supervise at Klimt

The material framework

Wood, embossed metal, gilding or molding: an autonomous object placed around the canvas.

The painted border

An area of the canvas functions as an internal frame and prepares the gaze before the subject.

The typographic framework

A name, a quote or a formula inscribes the work in a speech as much as in a form.

The architectural framework

The wall, the niche and the room become the envelope of the image: it is the ideal of the total work of art.

Case n° 1 · The metal becomes manifest

Pallas Athena : a frame that announces the image

Painted 1898, Pallas Athena is a program work of the young Secession. The protective goddess of the arts wears scale armor, a helmet and a small naked figure of Truth. Around her, the metal frame repeats the logic of the image: side spirals, hammered surface and monumental title.

The word PALLAS ATHENE runs on the upper crossbar. Before even entering the painting, the viewer receives a name and authority. The frame does not illustrate the canvas: it proclaims it.

The frame slightly increases the width, but radically changes the status of the work: the painted square becomes a ceremonial plaque, almost a shield or a sign.

The frame bears the inscription "JUDITH UND HOLOFERNES" and prevents the heroine from being reduced to a simple sensual Salomé. Image of the painting and its frame, public domain.

Case n° 2 · The named frame

Judith I : when the inscription corrects the look

In Judith I (1901), Klimt compresses the biblical account to the point of making Holofernes' head almost secondary. The face, gold and necklace dominate. This ambiguity favored the assimilation of the figure to Salomé, another femme fatale very present in the fin-de-siecle imagination.

The upper crossbar of the frame decides the question: JUDITH UND HOLOFERNES. The edge therefore becomes a cartel incorporated into the work. It not only describes what is visible; it restores what the composition deliberately made uncertain.

Spirals and metallic reliefs interact with stylized trees, golden scales and painted jewelry. At the boundary between canvas and frame, it becomes difficult to know where the image ends and the object begins.

Observe: the frame is wider at the top than at the bottom. This asymmetry gives the inscription the value of a pediment and transforms the vertical portrait into small architecture.

Three solutions, three effects

The essential collaborator

Georg Klimt, the brother who gave relief to the drawings

Gustav's cadet, Georg Klimt (1867 -1931) trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts and then worked as a scissor, metal sculptor and teacher.

Klimt Foundation sources clearly document its role in executing executives Pallas Athena and of Judith I, according to Gustav's designs. This collaboration sums up the ambition of the Secession: the painter's drawing is worth no more than the craftsmanship of the craftsman; the completed work depends on both.

  • Painter designs: proportions, inscriptions, patterns, relationship with composition.
  • The metalworker interprets: embossed, chiseled, assembled, patinated and material strength.
  • The frame becomes proof: it preserves traces of collective work rarely visible in cropped reproductions.

A common trap is to automatically assign any golden frame surrounding a Klimt to Georg. Only frames documented by archives, catalogs and collections should be presented as original creations.

Beyond the molding

The entire room can become the setting

At the Beethoven exhibition of 1902, Josef Hoffmann coordinated twenty-one artists around the sculpture by Max Klinger. Klimt's frieze occupies the walls of a side nave; an opening provides a view towards the central statue. Here, the frame is no longer a rectangle placed around a canvas: it is an architectural sequence.

Historical photography recalls that the Secession thought of the exhibition as a whole. Distance, height, passage and light participated in the work as much as the drawing. This logic will continue in the Stoclet Palace, where Klimt's mosaics respond directly to the architecture and furniture.

Reading method

Six questions to ask in front of a framed Klimt

These checks avoid confusing the historical setting, a later museum frame and a border painted by Klimt on the canvas itself.

Is the frame contemporary with the painting?View museum records and old exhibition photographs.
Is there a documented drawing or attribution?A "Klimtian" style is never enough to prove the artist’s conception.
Is the title written on the frame?Chez Pallas Athena and Judith I, the text directly guides the interpretation.
Do the patterns match those of the canvas?Spirals, scales, flowers and metal surfaces can cross the material boundary.
Does the format change with the frame?A wider crosspiece or pediment transforms the proportion felt.
Does the wall play a role? For a frieze or decor, the right unit of analysis is sometimes not the painting, but the room.

For reproduction

Which frame to choose without making a fake "original frame"?

The objective is not to approximately copy a museum setting, but to find a fair relationship between the work, its colors and your interior. Always clearly mention that this is a contemporary frame.

Sober black

It reinforces the contours and is suitable for very golden compositions without adding a second ornamentation.

Matte gold

Closer to old shine than shiny gold. Prefer a simple molding and a warm patina.

American snare drum

It lets a square or very dense canvas breathe and creates a clear shadow around the frame.

Brownwood

Useful for landscapes, Attersee greens and works from before the Golden Period.

Practical rule: while the painting already contains a lot of gold, patterns and contrasts, the frame often needs to simplify. The richness of a Klimt comes first from the painting; a molding that is too demonstrative can blur its structure.

Frequently asked questions

Klimt frames: the essentials

Did Klimt make his own frames?

He designed some of them, but the material execution could be entrusted to a craftsman. His brother Georg notably created the metal frames of Pallas Athena and Judith I according to his drawings.

The framework of Judith I is it original?

Yes. It belongs to the historical conception of the work and bears the inscription "JUDITH UND HOLOFERNES", essential for identifying the biblical subject.

Is the frame of the portrait of Adèle Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt?

The golden frame is generally attributed to Josef Hoffmann, architect and major figure of the Wiener Werkstätte. It illustrates the collective dimension of Viennese modernity.

Why do reproductions often show paintings without frames?

Catalogs and shops often crop the image on the painted surface in order to offer several formats. This presentation is commercially useful, but it can remove part of the material history of the work.

Should you always put a golden frame around a Klimt?

No. A black, brown frame or American snare drum can better respect the composition. Gold works especially if it remains matte, simple and tuned to the actual tones of the paint.
