More than a painter, not quite a modern scholar
Leonardo da Vinci became the symbol of "universal genius". This formula is correct if it describes the magnitude of his questions; it becomes misleading if it attributes all modern inventions to it. Leonardo observes, draws, experiments and imagines with extraordinary freedom, but many of his projects remain on paper.
His true originality lies less in a list of machines than in a method: to paint a body, he wants to know the muscles; to represent a landscape, understand water, air and light; to design a city, study traffic, canals and health.

Give the illusion of life
Leonardo's painting does not only seek resemblance. She wants to make a living, mobile being crossed by a thought. In The Mona Lisa, the twisting pose, the look and the smile seem to change depending on the way we observe the painting.
The sfumato plays a central role. Leonardo overlays very thin layers of oil paint so that the contours gradually dissolve into the shadow. Around the eyes and mouth, the absence of a clear line makes the expression unstable and alive.
It also perfects atmospheric perspective: in the distance, the mountains become bluer, paler and less precise. It is not a simple decorative recipe, but the pictorial application of an observation of air and light.

The Last Supper changes narrative painting
Leonardo chooses the moment following the announcement of the betrayal. The apostles react in groups of three: hands raised, glances crossed, bodies bent and sudden conversations. Jesus remains the calm center of a movement that spreads throughout the table.
Perspective leads to his head, while the light and opening of the background give it an almost architectural presence. The work becomes a model for generations of artists, even if the experimental technique used on the wall quickly causes its degradation.

To understand body movement, Leonardo studies bones, muscles, organs, nerves and circulation. He practiced human dissections, notably in Florence then in Pavia with Professor Marcantonio della Torre.
His anatomical drawings are revolutionary in their clarity. He multiplies views, cuts shapes, breaks down layers and sometimes uses representations that announce modern medical illustration. The fetus in the uterus, spine, heart and muscles are among his most famous studies.
The paradox is major: this research remains in his papers and is not published during his lifetime. They therefore did not immediately transform European medicine. Their real scientific influence mainly occurred after their rediscovery.

But it also explains its limits. He accumulates, takes up, transforms and publishes little. His famous draft treatise on anatomy did not succeed, and the Treatise on painting was assembled after his death from copies organized by Francesco Melzi.
