Art galleries in New York: directory, map and artistic districts
30 galleries, museums and art venues, including 11 clearly marked shopping malls
New York has several art scenes rather than a single center. Chelsea concentrates major international galleries; the Upper East Side brings together historical collections and modernism; Downtown favors experimentation, while Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx connect contemporary art, communities and old industrial buildings.

Understanding the New York art scene
A polycentric metropolis, from the international market to experimental spaces
New York's artistic history is written as much in its museums as in its neighborhoods. Chelsea warehouses offer large volumes to shopping malls; Museum Mile unfolds centuries of art history; the Lower East Side retains a more experimental energy. Across the East River, Brooklyn and Queens transform factories, schools and workshops, while the Bronx champions urban and diasporic narratives.
Travel Chelsea on foot
Streets 19 to 25, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenue, form the densest route. Late Thursday afternoon is often a good time for openings.
Spend time at Museum Mile
The Met, the Guggenheim, the Frick and the Neue Galerie each deserve several hours. It is better to choose two institutions rather than skimming over everything.
Group the boroughs together
Brooklyn, Long Island City and the Bronx require separate routes. Always check timetables, seasonal closures and tickets before departure.
