To see The Night Watch, you have to go to the Rijksmuseum, Museumstraat 1 in Amsterdam. The work is not simply hung in a Dutch painting room: it occupies the Night Watch Gallery, an axial space designed for her at the end of the Gallery of Honor.
The architectural route prepares for the meeting. After the vast Atrium, we reach the level dedicated to the 17th century and the Gallery of Honor, lined with alcoves where Vermeer, Frans Hals, Jan Steen and Rembrandt appear. Since 2019, this meeting includes Operation Night Watch, the largest study and restoration program ever devoted to the work. The Rijksmuseum is large, but The Night Watch serves as a major orientation point. The museum's free app can guide you step by step; On site, follow the signs to the Gallery of Honor then to the Night Watch Gallery.
Enter through the Passage
Access is located under the building. Staircase and elevator lead to the Atrium with information, cloakroom, toilets, café and shop.
Go up to the 17th century
Follow the signage for the masterpieces or start the Rembrandt route in the Rijksmuseum app.
Cross the Gallery of Honor
Don't run straight: the alcoves build a progression between Vermeer, Hals and Rembrandt's contemporaries.
Enter the dedicated room
The Night Watch forms the monumental stopping point at the end of the axis, currently associated with the glass restoration site.

Start outside, but prepare inside
The museum is located in the Museum Quarter, at Museumstraat 1. From Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Zuid, metro 52 leads to Vijzelgracht; the museum then announces less than ten minutes of walking. Several trams also serve the area.
A departure slot is mandatory. Arriving ten to fifteen minutes before the time allows time to go through the check and drop off the bags. The free cloakroom accepts bags and small backpacks, but not suitcases or very large luggage.

Don't start with the details
Six or eight meters away, first look at the general movement: the captain in black advances, the light lieutenant receives the light, the spades and rifles push the company out of the frame.
At medium distance, look for the three foci: the captain's gesture, the lieutenant's golden costume and the luminous young girl. Also observe the shadow of the hand on the light clothing and the succession of gestures linked to the musket.
Up close, the material becomes visible: impasto, metallic reflections, skin tones, accidents and restoration areas. Finally go back; the painting must once again become a crowd in action rather than an inventory of characters.
II · Operation Night Watch
See a restoration being done
The project launched in 2019 combines scientific imaging, microscopic examinations, material analyzes and conservation treatment. After replacing the wooden frame with a tension-controlled aluminum system, the team a the removal of old varnishes began at the end of 2024. Visitors observe this work through the walls of the room designed around the canvas.
What the construction site changes: it adds a layer of scientific reading and can limit certain angles or close together. It does not transform the room into a separate temporary exhibition: the painting remains the central point of the permanent collection.

Understand what is missing on the left
The painting was moved to Amsterdam City Hall in 1715 and intersected to fit between two doors. The largest loss is on the left. The small old copy attributed to Gerrit Lundens allows the original composition to be reconstructed.
Before the visit, look at this copy; in front of the original, imagine the entrenched space. The march then appears less frontal and wider, with more space in front of the militiamen.
