The royal collection becomes a museum

One hundred paintings to enter the Prado

The collection does not seek to cover all schools encyclopedicly. It first reflects the passions of the sovereigns: Charles V and Philip II for Titian, Philip IV for Rubens and Velazquez, then the attention paid to Goya by subsequent generations.

At the Prado, Velázquez organizes the look, Bosch fills the world, Titian makes color reign and Goya sometimes removes the carpet under certainties. The palace did not choose discretion, and that is so much the better.

Les Ménines - Diego Velázquez image 1 copy hand painted in oil #1
Diego Velazquez

The Meninas

Date 1656 Collection Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

The court scene becomes an enigma about the gaze: Velazquez, the Infanta, the mirror and the rulers occupy several levels of reality at once. The bright opening of the door, the reflections of the mirror and the vast ceiling make moving the space well beyond the canvas, while the painter questions his own status within the courtyard.

Hieronymus Bosch

The Garden of Delights

Date 1490 -1500 Collection Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

The triptych takes Creation's gaze towards an abundant earthly paradise then towards Hell, in a visual invention which remains without equivalent. Francisco de Goya

The naked Maja

Date 1795 -1800 Collection Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

The model directly supports the viewer's gaze; the famous pose dialogues with the tradition of Venus while refusing the mythological alibi. What the ranking reveals

One hundred paintings, three reasons to come back

The Prado isn't just an icon chest. It is a museum where a few artists are represented with exceptional depth, where royal commissions have produced unique ensembles and where the transition from Velazquez to Goya lastingly changes the way we look at power.

01

A museum of painters

Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velazquez and Goya are not present with a single masterpiece: their ensembles allow us to follow a thought in movement.

02

The court does not control everything

Official portraits build rank, but looks, gestures and details introduce a human truth that etiquette never manages to silence.

03

Goya opens modernity

From popular festivals to war disasters and black paintings, he transforms observation of the world into criticism and inner experience.

Palace timeline

Five dates to understand the Prado

1561Madrid becomes capital

The court settled permanently in Madrid and the royal collections gradually concentrated major ensembles there.

1656The Meninas

Velazquez transforms a portrait of the Infanta into a dizzying reflection on presence, power and painting.

1814May 2 and 3

Goya gives the insurrection and the executions of Madrid two images that change the painting of war.

1819Opening of the museum

The Royal Museum of Painting and Sculpture opens to the public in the building designed by Juan de Villanueva.

2024A Caravaggio found

The rediscovered Ecce Homo joins the collection and reminds us that the history of the Prado continues to be written.

The Prado in depth

How to read this Top 100 from the Prado Museum?

The collection does not seek to cover all schools encyclopedicly. It first reflects the passions of the sovereigns: Charles V and Philip II for Titian, Philip IV for Rubens and Velazquez, then the attention paid to Goya by subsequent generations.

Court portraits occupy a major place, but they are never reduced to protocol. In Velázquez and Goya, the official pose reveals a personality, a fatigue, a distance or a worry that ceremonial clothing fails to conceal.

Religious painting runs the entire route. Fra Angelico, Rogier van der Weyden, El Greco, Zurbaran, Murillo and Ribera approach the sacred through very different paths, from meditative light to the almost physical presence of bodies.

Northern schools bring another perspective. Bosch invents worlds populated with symbols, Bruegel observes the crowds and Rubens transforms the myth into continuous movement. Their abundance responds to the sobriety of many Spanish masters.

With Goya, the museum enters modernity. Popular festivals give way to war, disenchanted portraits and black paintings, where collective history meets the most intimate fears.

Four visit keys

Watch without turning the visit into a star hunt

Royal provenance, series, perspective and material allow us to understand why the paintings respond to each other. The best shortcut in the Prado is often to slow down.

Provenance

Follow the royal taste

Orders, inheritances and acquisitions explain the exceptional concentrations of Titian, Rubens, Velazquez and Bosch.

Series

Compare the sets

Equestrian portraits, Hercules works, senses, poetry and black paintings benefit from being regarded as cycles.

Look

Identify the viewer's position

Mirror, frontality, profile or side scene indicate how each painting brings us into its space.

Matter

Approach the surface

From the Flemish finish to Goya's late touches, the way of painting carries as much meaning as the subject represented.

Frequently asked questions

The Prado without a crumpled plan

The essential answers to understand the scope, classification, images and links of this route.

Why is the Prado often described as a "painters’ museum"?

Because it retains exceptionally rich ensembles of a few major artists, including Bosch, Titian, El Greco, Rubens, Velazquez and Goya. We can follow their evolution instead of seeing only an isolated work.

Why do Goya and Velazquez occupy so many places?

The Prado preserves exceptional ensembles by these two artists. Their significant presence reflects the real depth of the museum, while leaving substantial room for Italian and Flemish schools.

Why doesn't Picasso's Guernica appear?

Guernica belongs to the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, also in Madrid. It is therefore not part of the Prado's works.

What are Goya's Black Paintings?

These are the paintings that Goya made directly on the walls of his house, the Quinta del Sordo, between 1820 and 1823. They were then transferred to canvas and are today kept at the Prado.

What is the oldest work in this selection?

The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, painted around 1425 -1426, opens the oldest part of the route. It shortly precedes The Descent from the Cross by Rogier van der Weyden.

Can all these works be seen in one visit?

It is difficult to carefully look at a hundred paintings in a day. A first visit can favor the twenty-five icons, then return to the sets of Velazquez, Goya, Titian, Rubens or Bosch.

Why aren't some techniques just oil on canvas?

Old Prado paintings also use oil on panel, tempera or, for Black Paintings, a wall technique transferred to canvas. They remain fully paintings.

Should the hanging be checked before the visit?

Yes. A work can be loaned, restored or temporarily removed. The official website of the Museo Nacional del Prado remains the reference for today's presentation.

The ranking ends, the gaze remains at the Prado

One hundred paintings to see the whole Prado

The journey begins with universal images, but its true strength comes from the dialogues they open. Velazquez responds to Titian, Goya transforms court painting into critical experience, Bosch and Bruegel observe humanity distance, while El Greco, Zurbaran and Ribera give the sacred a physical presence. The Prado does not impose a perfectly linear story: it circulates the gaze between devotion, power, myth, daily life and worry modern.
