An archipelago of modernities

The Balkans are not a single school. They make up a network of cities, workshops and memories where models from Munich, Paris, Vienna and Prague circulate, but also local traditions, costumes, rites, conflicts and the landscapes of the Adriatic, the Danube and the Aegean Sea.

This route favors oil painting and the works themselves. It reveals continuities: the invention of national images in the 19th century, the rise of bourgeois portraiture, the discovery of the outdoors, then the arrival of expressionism, cubism and an abstraction still linked to the visible world.
