Death of Van Gogh: the facts, the last days and the myths

What do we really know about Vincent van Gogh's ending? The archives make it possible to establish a solid chronology, without transforming the gaps in the file into spectacular certainties.

From the stay at the Ravoux inn to the letters exchanged with Theo, from the role of Doctor Gachet to the myth of the "last painting", here is a documented investigation which distinguishes established facts, interpretations and late hypotheses.

What the sources allow us to affirm

A documented story, but not a file without gaps

Vincent van Gogh arrived in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 20, 1890, after leaving the Saint-Rémy asylum and seeing his family again in Paris. He moved to the Ravoux inn, worked with remarkable intensity and consulted Doctor Paul Gachet. On July 27, he returned to the inn injured. He died on the night of the 28th to the 29th, in the presence of Theo.

Close accounts of events, family correspondence and historical tradition have led to suicide being held back. This is again the conclusion presented by the Musée d'Orsay and the Van Gogh Museum. It is part of a medical history marked by crises, periods of anxiety and previously documented suicidal thoughts.

Why do we talk about mystery? Because the weapon was not found at the time, the exact location is uncertain and detailed testimonies were sometimes recorded years later. These absences favored another hypothesis, popularized in the 21st century: Van Gogh would have been injured by a third party and would then have protected the person responsible.

However, a documentary gap does not prove the hypothesis that fills it. We must weigh the proximity of the sources, their coherence, their date and what they really say. The objective is neither to artificially close the debate nor to put a historical consensus and a late reconstruction on the same level.

Prudent conclusion: reference institutions retain suicide. Certain material details remain unknown, but they do not constitute, in themselves, proof of accidental or intentional homicide.

The context of recent months

Auvers: refuge near Paris, non-peaceful retreat

Portrait of Doctor Paul Gachet with a branch of foxglove by Vincent van Gogh
Doctor Paul Gachet, doctor and collector, painted by Van Gogh in June 1890.

The nuanced role of Doctor Gachet

Camille Pissarro had recommended Paul Gachet to Theo. The doctor knew the world of artists and practiced engraving himself. Van Gogh visits him, paints two versions of his portrait and also represents his daughter Marguerite. Their relationship is neither perfect trust nor definitive rejection.

In his first impressions, Vincent judges Gachet as nervous or affected as he is; later, he recognizes a true friendship. The portrait should therefore not serve as a retrospective diagnosis. His melancholy pose, with his head resting on his hand, also belongs to a long visual tradition of melancholy.

After the injury on July 27, Gachet intervened with Doctor Mazery. According to the institutional account of the Musée d'Orsay, they consider Van Gogh to be inoperable and uncompromising. The choice is to leave him in his room at the Ravoux inn, where Theo arrives the next day.

Intense production does not cancel out a crisis

The 74 paintings and numerous drawings made in Auvers have sometimes been invoked to challenge the idea of suicide: how could such a productive painter have no longer seen a future? The question seems intuitive, but it is based on a false equivalence between the ability to work and the absence of psychological suffering.

The Van Gogh Museum emphasizes the complexity of suicide, rarely explainable by a single event. The letters simultaneously show artistic ambition, gratitude, financial worry, feelings of failure and fear of a new crisis. These states can coexist; they do not form a linear narrative.

Auvers is therefore both a place of pictorial momentum and vulnerability. Houses, fields and portraits should not be read like medical bulletins. Above all, they bear witness to an artist who is still looking for formats, rhythms and colors.

Vincent describes a tense atmosphere and returns to Theo's difficulties. He speaks of his own existence as attacked "at the root", a formula often cited, but which must remain placed in the letter as a whole.

Unfinished letter found on him

A document, not an isolated verdict

A first unfinished version of the July 23 letter was on Van Gogh on the 27th. This material proximity is important, but its content must be interpreted with the rest of the file, not as independent proof.

The letters reveal a man who continues to think, work and love his own while deeply doubting his place and the future. Their strength comes from this coexistence, not from a sentence transformed into a single key.Summary reading of the correspondence of July 1890

Wheat field with crows by Vincent van Gogh, long wrongly presented as his last painting
Wheat field with crows has long served as a mental image in the last hours, without proof that it is the last painting.

What the timeline says

On Sunday July 27, Van Gogh painted again. The Van Gogh Museum now associates this morning with Tree roots. Later, he was hit by a gunshot to the chest. The exact location where this occurs and the route immediately followed are not established with the same precision as his return to the Ravoux inn.

Doctors Mazery and Gachet examine him. The condition is considered too serious for an operation or transport. Theo, warned, arrives on Monday 28 and stays with his brother. Vincent died on Tuesday July 29 around half past one in the morning.

Theatrical dialogues, often reproduced as if they had been stenographed, should be avoided. Certain words attributed to Van Gogh come from memories or indirect testimonies. They can shed light on the memory of the drama, but do not all have the same documentary value.

At the shooting location: "wheat fields" dominate the popular imagination, but the precise location is not definitively identified by contemporary sources.

Historical consensus and late theory

Suicide or shooting by a third party: how to weigh the arguments?

A serious investigation separates three levels: what is attested, what is probable and what remains speculative. The following table does not distribute points; it indicates the nature of the sources.

Element What he allows you to say Limit to keep in mind
Family and medical story Relatives and institutions held back suicide; Theo goes to Vincent's bedside and does not report an attack. Several detailed accounts were established after the events and may contain discrepancies.
Documented history Crises, anxiety, self-aggressive behavior and suicidal thoughts appear in the Saint-Rémy archives and letters. An antecedent does not mechanically prove the circumstances of a subsequent event.
Weapon not found The absence of the weapon in the 1890 file leaves a real material question. An absence identifies no shooter, no motive, no alternative scenario.
Supposed trajectory and distance Modern authors have found that certain aspects of the injury appear atypical. Period medical data is limited; a modern reconstruction cannot recover missing information.
Young shooter theory Popularized from 2011, it suggests an accident involving a teenager that Van Gogh allegedly protected. No decisive contemporary testimony, no weapon linked to the drama and no verifiable admission establish this scenario.
Position of museums The Musée d'Orsay and the Van Gogh Museum continue to present death as the consequence of suicide. Consensus can be discussed, but an alternative requires evidence proportionate to the proposed revision.
Best supported conclusion

Suicide remains restrained

It corresponds to the reading of close sources, the known medical context and the story preserved by the family. This is the formulation used by the two reference institutions consulted.

Legitimate zone of uncertainty

The material detail remains incomplete

The weapon and precise location are not documented as one would expect from a contemporary investigation. Saying "we don’t know" on these points is more accurate than inventing certainty.

The visual myth of the last days

No, Crow Wheat Field is probably not the last painting

The dark sky, broken paths, and the flight of crows encouraged a prophetic reading. However, the Van Gogh Museum specifies that several brighter works were painted after this landscape. The idea of a farewell message is based on interpretation, not chronology.

Tree roots: the location of the pattern, the supposed lighting and the state of completion reinforced the hypothesis of an execution on the morning of July 27. The correct wording remains "last probable table".

Theo, funerals and memory building

Self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh, emblematic image of the artist
Posthumous fame has sometimes transformed a complex life into a simple tale of cursed genius.

A disappearance quickly followed by that of Theo

Van Gogh is buried in Auvers on July 30. Around Theo are Andries Bonger, Émile Bernard, Charles Laval, Lucien Pissarro and Father Tanguy. The coffin and the room are surrounded by flowers and paintings, a strong image transmitted by the memories of loved ones.

Theo died in January 1891, six months after Vincent. Jo van Gogh-Bonger then played a decisive role: she preserved the works, organized exhibitions and published the correspondence. Without his work, Van Gogh's understanding - and much of his international reception - would have been profoundly different.

The story of the "crazy painter who commits suicide after his last masterpiece" is seductive because it is compact. However, it erases relationships, work, artistic strategies, Jo's attention and critical debates. Respecting Van Gogh also consists of not making his death the total explanation of his painting.

Choosing a work by Auvers for your interior

Four atmospheres, four ways of living with the latest paintings

A reproduction does not have to artificially dramatize Van Gogh's ending. It must preserve the color relationships, the direction of the keys and the breathing specific to each composition.

01

Tree roots

A horizontal format, very close together, for a contemporary interior. Blues, greens and ochres work on a light mineral wall.

02

Doctor Gachet

The vertical format creates an intimate focal point. A deep brown or matte gold frame supports the blue without overloading the portrait.

03

The Auvers Church

A strong architectural presence for an open wall. The cobalt sky gains depth near natural woods and ecru.

04

Crow field

A wide landscape for the living room or office. Leave some perspective to first read the large bands of sky and wheat.

The death of Van Gogh in eight precise answers

When and where did Vincent van Gogh die?

He died on July 29, 1890 around half past one in the morning, in his room at the Ravoux inn in Auvers-sur-Oise.

What is the historical cause of his death?

The Musée d'Orsay and the Van Gogh Museum hold death following suicide. This is also the conclusion transmitted by relatives and the documentary tradition.

Why is there a theory of accidental shooting?

Since the weapon and exact location were not clearly documented, modern authors have proposed that a third party fired. This hypothesis, however, is not based on any decisive contemporary evidence.

Did Doctor Gachet treat Van Gogh?

Yes. Gachet followed Van Gogh to Auvers and intervened with Doctor Mazery after the injury. Doctors then deemed him inoperable and untransportable.

Was Theo present at the time of death?

Yes. Warned after the tragedy, Theo arrived on July 28 and remained with Vincent until his death the following night.

Probably not. The Van Gogh Museum says several works followed. Tree Roots is now considered the most likely last painting.

How many works did Van Gogh paint in Auvers?

The Musée d'Orsay retains 74 paintings and numerous drawings made in 70 days, between May 20 and July 29, 1890.

Where is Van Gogh buried?

He is buried in the Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery. Theo, first buried elsewhere, has been resting alongside him since 1914.

Hold back the essentials

Gray areas do not make every hypothesis a certainty

The facts place Van Gogh in Auvers, working until July 27, injured that day then accompanied by Theo until his death on the 29th. Suicide remains the explanation retained by sources and reference museums. The weapon and the precise location remain unknown: recognizing it does not weaken the story, it makes it more accurate.
