Art galleries in Bristol: directory, map and artistic districts
Twelve verified addresses, from large institutions to independent workshops, with a simple map and walking routes to understand Bristol's art scene.
Where to see art in Bristol?
For a first visit, focus on four poles. THE Harborside brings together Arnolfini and Spike Island for contemporary art. Queen's Road and Clifton combine the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, the RWA and several commercial galleries. Stokes Croft connects workshops, associative spaces and urban art. Finally, Bedminster offers the large open-air museum of Upfest frescoes.
The local scene does not function as a single gallery street. It is discovered by neighborhood, and several workshops only open during exhibitions or special weekends.
Six zones to orient yourself
This map is deliberately schematic: it shows the relationship between the artistic centers rather than an exact road route. The directory links then open each address in Google Maps.

Buildings, workshops and works on the street
Bristol juxtaposes the monumental museum, the old converted port infrastructure and the collective workshop. These contexts change the way we encounter art.

Which artistic districts to favor?
Harborside
Arnolfini and Spike Island form the most coherent duo. The first is central, open to the quays and very accessible; the second has the identity of a place of production. Allow around 25 minutes on foot between them following the port.
Queen's Road and Clifton
The Bristol Museum and the RWA are close together. Continue to Clifton Village for Hidden Gallery and Clifton Contemporary Art, or walk up Whiteladies Road towards Rainmaker. This area is the densest to combine museum, academy and art market.
Stokes Croft
Jamaica Street Studios, PRSC and the walls of Stokes Croft tell the story of a collective artistic culture. The neighborhood is best visited when you accept the unexpected: a window, a poster, a temporarily open workshop or a freshly painted fresco.
Bedminster and Southville
North Street concentrates the Upfest route, with more than 170 murals marked by Visit Bristol. The Upfest gallery provides a good anchor point, but the essentials can be seen outside, branching off into the adjacent streets.
Paintworks
The Martin Parr Foundation justifies a dedicated excursion. It is less central, but its programming, library and archives give a specific place to documentary photography in the artistic landscape of Bristol.

From three hours to an art weekend
The times below leave a real place for exhibitions. Don't try to check all twelve locations on the same day: Bristol rewards walking and detours.
The contemporary port
- Start at Arnolfini and see the current exhibition.
- Walk along Floating Harbor towards Wapping Wharf.
- Continue to Spike Island.
- Finish at the café or return via the quays.
Museum, port and city
- Bristol Museum opening.
- Cross the street for the RWA.
- Go down Park Street towards the Old City.
- Take a detour to Centrespace if open.
- End the afternoon at Arnolfini.
Institutions and countercultures
- Day 1: Clifton, Old City and Harborside.
- Day 2 morning: Stokes Croft and Jamaica Street.

- Photo variant: replace Bedminster with Paintworks.
Prepare your visit without wasting time
Check exposure
A center can be opened while its galleries are being assembled. Check out the "What’s on" page that morning.
Group by area
The port and center are easy to combine. Clifton, Bedminster and Paintworks each deserve a separate block.
Choose the bus over parking
The climb to Clifton and the connection to Bedminster are easy by bus. The center is best explored on foot.
Ask before photographing
Photography varies by artwork, lenders and galleries. Commercial spaces can also apply their own rules.
Allow time for bookstores
Arnolfini, Upfest and Martin Parr Foundation have selections of books or editions that really extend the visit.
Look at the city between two places
In Bristol, painted walls, posters, port architecture and studios are as much a part of the route as the clean rooms.
Hours: information dated
This guide was checked on July 29, 2026. Independent times, assembly days and special events change: the official website of each location remains the final reference.

What is the best art gallery in Bristol?
There is no single answer. Arnolfini is the best starting point for international contemporary art, the Bristol Museum for historical collections, Spike Island for understanding artistic production and the RWA for linking ancient, modern and contemporary art.
Are museums and galleries free?
Arnolfini, Spike Island, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and Martin Parr Foundation announce free access to their regular exhibitions. The RWA combines free spaces and potentially paid exhibitions. Special events may require a ticket.
Where to see street art in Bristol?
Stokes Croft is the most central area. For a wider route, go to Bedminster and follow North Street around the Upfest Gallery. Urban works change: an old printed map is never completely definitive.
Can we visit everything on foot?
Harborside, Old City, Park Street and Queen's Road combine on foot if you accept the climb to Clifton. Bedminster and Paintworks are more comfortable by bus or bike, especially in a single day program.
Which neighborhood to choose to buy art?
Clifton concentrates Hidden Gallery and Clifton Contemporary Art, while Rainmaker is on Whiteladies Road. Upfest Gallery is the best destination for urban art, publishing and graffiti-related books.
When to visit artists' studios?
Watch for the Spike Island and Jamaica Street Studios Open Studios. The Jamaica Street collective announces its 2026 open house from September 25 to 27. Excluding events, workspaces are generally not accessible as a public gallery.
