
What were Leonardo da Vinci's jobs?
Painter trained in the workshop, engineer serving princes, anatomist by practice, field cartographer and show organizer: his activities change depending on the location, patrons and orders.
Functions, not a collection of modern CVs
Asking Leonardo da Vinci's "profession" requires translating the world of the 15th century into our categories. A Renaissance artist is not limited to painting easel paintings. There bottega de Verrocchio, where Leonardo trained in Florence, produced paintings, sculptures, metal objects, ephemeral decorations and technical solutions.
Later, Italian courts sought men capable of beautifying a city, organizing a party, fortifying a square or diverting a watercourse. Leonardo therefore presents himself to his bosses as a versatile designer. Some roles correspond to paid orders; others, like anatomy or botany, are mainly personal research intended for a treatise or a better understanding of the world.
Nine roles exercised or claimed
The preserved sheets make it possible to distinguish court activities from scholarly research and projects that remain theoretical.

1. Painter
Altarpieces, portraits, frescoes and monumental compositions founded his reputation. He designs slowly, multiplies his studies and sometimes experiments with fragile techniques.

2. Engineer
He studies gears, lifting, pumps, weapons and fortifications. His drawings range from the observed mechanism to the speculative project; not all of them are intended to be built.

3. Hydraulician
Canals, locks, drainage, navigation and flood control interest princes and cities alike. Leonardo also observes erosion and whirlwinds.

4. Cartographer
For César Borgia, he inspects cities and territories. The Imola plan combines survey, orientation and vertical projection with remarkable precision.

5. Anatomist
He practices dissections and collaborates with Marcantonio della Torre in Pavia. His plates describe bones, muscles, organs, heart and reproduction.

6. Architect
He draws churches with a centered plan, staircases, stables, towns and construction sites. He often acts as a consultant rather than a documented project manager.

7. Musician
Ancient sources praise his singing and playing of the lyre. The music facilitates his entry into the court of Milan and accompanies the culture of shows.

8. Sculptor
He prepared the gigantic equestrian monument by Francesco Sforza and created a clay model. The final bronze is never cast.

9. Scenographer
In Milan, he imagined sets, costumes, automatons and machinery for entertainment where engineering produced wonder.

The painter is already a compositional engineer
In theAdoration of the Magi, Leonardo builds a crowd, architecture and movements before fixing the details. The underlying drawing organizes the trajectories of the gaze like a system of forces.
This way of thinking explains why his activities communicate: the painter analyzes the gestures, the engineer breaks down the movements, the anatomist reveals the hidden structures and the scenographer coordinates the effects over time.

Corporations, brotherhoods and civic authorities commissioned altarpieces, portraits and public decorations.
The Sforza
Painting, equestrian monuments, festivals, military and hydraulic engineering serve the ducal prestige.
Caesar Borgia
Leonardo inspected fortresses and territories as an engineer and cartographer in 1502 -1503.
Francis I
Welcomed as the king's first painter, engineer and architect according to documentary tradition, he advises and continues his research.
Inventor was not his job title
Unbuilt projects
The armored tank, certain flying machines or large river diversions are best known from drawings. A spectacular idea is not automatically a working prototype.
Mechanisms already known
Leonardo also observes and perfects existing systems. Its contribution is often due to graphic analysis, variants and the combination of mechanisms.
Limited distribution
His notebooks remained private and his treatises were not published during his lifetime. Much research therefore had little immediate effect on the professions of his time.

What was Leonardo da Vinci's main profession?
He was first an artist, trained as a painter in Verrocchio's studio. At court, this status extended to engineering, entertainment, architecture and technical consulting.
Was Leonardo da Vinci really an engineer?
Yes. He studied fortifications, machinery, hydraulics and public works, and was employed or sought after for these skills. This does not mean that all his projects were carried out.
Was he a doctor?
No. He practiced anatomy and collaborated with medical circles, but he did not practice medicine with patients.
Was he an architect?
He produced numerous plans and architectural advice. However, evidence of buildings entirely built under his direction remains limited.
Why is he called an inventor?
Because his notebooks contain an immense amount of devices, variants and experiments. The word describes his design activity, but does not correspond to an official professional title.
How did he earn his living?
Through orders, court salaries, accommodation, gratuities and functions entrusted by princes, religious institutions or civic authorities.
