Visitor guide verified on September 27, 2026
In the heart of the De Hoge Veluwe National Park, the Kroeller-Müller brings together 88 paintings and 172 works on paper by Vincent van Gogh. But not all of them are permanently on display. This guide shows what to look at, in what order and how to organize a day between museum, sculpture garden and bike.
What you need to know before visiting
The museum is located at Houtkampweg 6, Otterlo, inside the De Hoge Veluwe National Park. So you don't just reach an urban address: you have to cross an entrance to the park, then reach the museum by bike, on foot, by bus or by car.
88 paintings and 172 works on paper acquired by the Kroeller-Müllers.
3 hours for museum and sculptures; 6 hours with a discovery of the park.
Helene Kroeller-Müller bought her first Van Gogh in 1908: Wood edge, paid 110 florins. With Anton Kroeller, it then constituted one of the most important Van Gogh ensembles in the world. The museum, designed by Henry van de Velde, opened in 1938.
The best tour route, step by step
- Start with the Van Gogh exhibition. In the morning, attention is fresh. Until January 3, 2027, go to the four rooms of the exhibition rather than the usual gallery. Follow the proposed themes and compare the stages: dark Dutch works, Parisian lightening, color of Arles, then Saint-Rémy and Auvers.
- Choose six works and slow down. Hanging varies; locate those marked “now on display” on the museum website. Look at each from a distance, then at an arm's length to read the brushwork.
- Take a break from modern art. The collection does not stop at Van Gogh: Seurat, Mondrian, Picasso or even the sculptures allow us to understand what comes after him.
- Go out into the sculpture garden. Allow at least 45 minutes, more in good weather. The 25 hectares of the garden are not just an extra charge.
- Finish with the park. A white bike ride avoids treating De Hoge Veluwe like a giant parking lot and gives the day its rhythm of art and nature.
Six Van Goghs to watch first
This selection covers the artist's major stages. It serves as a reading grid, even if a work is temporarily in reserve or on loan.
1. Edge of a Wood: Helene's First Purchase
Painted in 1883, this still earthy landscape explains Helene Kroeller-Müller's initial taste. The trunks and floors do not seek Provençal brilliance: they build a dense, almost tactile space. The painting is also a historic piece of the collection, since it constitutes the starting point in 1908.
2. Potato Eaters: The Kroeller-Müller Study
The museum painting precedes the final version of Amsterdam. Van Gogh wants to paint peasants who worked the land with the same hands they put to the dish. The light of the lamp, the angular faces and the brown palette create a deliberately rough scene. To put this ambition back in its environment, read our guide on Van Gogh in Nuenen.
3. Four faded sunflowers: Paris before the bouquets of Arles
These cut flowers do not yet form the most famous yellow bouquets. They are laid flat, massive and almost sculptural. Compare yellows, ochres and contours: Paris teaches him to lighten the palette without erasing the materiality of the subject.
4. Pont de Langlois with washerwomen: Arles and Japan
The drawbridge, the canal and the washerwomen organize a composition made of sharp diagonals and colorful planes. Real Provence requires a visual culture nourished by prints. Our files on Van Gogh in Arles and Van Gogh and Japan allow you to extend this reading.
5. Café terrace in the evening: paint at night without black
Van Gogh worked on site in Arles around September 16, 1888. The yellows and oranges of the gas intensified the blues of the sky; perspective draws the eye towards the street. The painting remains essential, but its fame does not guarantee its presence on the day of your visit: check its official status.
6. Road with a cypress and a star: the Saint-Rémy movement
The cypress becomes a dark column between sky and road. The stars, clouds and figures do not only tell the story of a place: their rhythms give the landscape a starting tension. For a detailed analysis, see Road with cypress and star.

Two hours enough only for a tight selection of rooms. Three hours correspond to the museum council for collections and the garden. Six o'clock give time to cycle, have lunch and see part of the park. For a first visit from Amsterdam, a whole day is the most comfortable choice.
Six reproductions linked to the route
These reproductions extend the contrasts of the route. For Potato Eaters, our catalog product page offers the final Amsterdam version, distinct from the study of Kröller-Müller illustrated above.
