Understand the Avignon scene

From the Gothic palace to contemporary writings

The Rocher des Doms concentrates the Palais des Papes, the Petit Palais and the great medieval stories. Further south, the Calvet, Angladon, Lapidaire and Vouland museums open onto painting, decorative arts and archaeology. Lambert Collection, Grenier à Sel, private galleries and Quartet+ program sites extend this heritage through video, photography, installation and emerging artists.

01

Read the papal city

Start with the Palais des Papes and the Petit Palais: frescoes, Italian primitives and the École d'Avignon place painting in its architecture.

02

Enjoy the museum trail

Permanent municipal museums are free. Calvet, Lapidaire, Petit Palais, Palais du Roure and Bains Pommer are easily connected on foot.

03

Check the exposures

Chapels, cloisters and galleries change rhythm during the Festival and Quartet+. Consult the official sheet before each trip.

Reliable sources, advice and related reading

Are Avignon museums and galleries free?

Permanent municipal museums are free. Private galleries generally are too; monuments and foundations apply their own prices.

Which neighborhood to choose for a first visit?

Connect the Palais des Papes, the Petit Palais, rue Joseph-Vernet and the old center: the route offers an excellent balance between heritage and current creation.

When to discover contemporary exhibitions?

The programming intensifies with the Avignon Festival and Quartet+, but institutions and galleries offer exhibitions all year round.

How to have a painting delivered outside France?

Our collection of original paintings for sale includes support on packaging, insurance and international delivery.

In Avignon, art spans the centuries without leaving the ramparts

Pontifical frescoes, primitive frescoes, decorative arts, modern collections, photography and contemporary installations make up a journey of rare density. The city can be discovered as much in its museums as in its chapels, galleries and performance venues transformed by exhibitions.

If a visit sparks the desire to live with a work, explore our original paintings. We help you choose the format and organize international delivery.
