Light and colors in La Ronde de nuit

Rembrandt does not seek to enlighten the entire company: he distributes light like a director and brings out red, gold, blue and white among the browns.

Essential idea

Light does not imitate uniform lighting: it selects characters and organizes action.

The captain in black, the lieutenant in light yellow and the young girl form three major accents. Between them, faces, weapons and fabrics appear then disappear in the darkness. This alternation gives the impression that the company is really moving towards us.

The palette visible today, however, is not identical to that of 1642. Some blues and purples have turned brown, red lacquers have faded and the old varnishes have darkened the whole for a long time.

The active center

Captain's black is not an absence of color

Frans Banninck Cocq wears an almost black suit, but Rembrandt avoids the flat figure. The white collar, face, forward hand and red scarf cut the body into sharp accents. The light hand acts as a signal: it controls the march and casts its shadow on the lieutenant.

Willem van Ruytenburch, on the contrary, receives a broad light. His yellow suit not only serves to beautify it; it captures the shadow of the captain's gesture, makes the halberd visible and gives immediate depth to the foreground.

Chiaroscuro is therefore based on an opposition of functions: black concentrates authority, while yellow makes the order readable.

Rembrandt does not use these colors as separate boxes. Blue smalt can go brown, green or purple; red lacquer can enrich a shadow; lead white gives both clarity and relief. Color is linked to material.

An appearance in the crowd

Why does the girl seem lit from the inside?

Placed behind the red musketeer, it receives a light that does not correspond to a continuous realistic beam. Her face, hair, dress and chicken hanging from her belt form an almost self-contained light spot.

This choice allows us to recognize the attributes of arquebusiers: chicken claws, powder horn and golden details. Color gives it a symbolic function before giving it a physical presence.

It also connects the main chromatic zones. Its yellows respond to the lieutenant, its shadows join the browns of the background and its proximity reinforces the red of the musketeer. Rembrandt thus creates a colorful passage between the foreground and the depth.

Light is narrative: she not only says "here is an enlightened body", but "here is the sign of companionship that should be noted".

The most complex costume

Nine colors to make lieutenant's gold

Microscopic observations from Operation Night Watch showed that Rembrandt is not satisfied with a single yellow pigment. He constructs Willem van Ruytenburch's golden embroidery with a succession of light, warm, dark and blue tones.

This diversity explains why the costume appears luminous even in its shadows. It is not a flat yellow, but a small architecture of thick and transparent touches.

A color gone

The musketeer's brown was a dark purple

A micro-sampling from the firing musketeer's jacket revealed a mixture composed mainly of smalt - about 75% - with a small amount of red lacquer, lead white and bone black.

Smalt is a crushed blue glass containing cobalt. Over time it loses some of its color in the oil; the red lacquer turns pale and the white becomes more transparent. An area that should have appeared blue-purple may then become a cloudy brown.

Paint reconstructions based on measured proportions produced a very dark purple, consistent with 17th-century recipes for painting purple velvet. The original palette was therefore more contrasted and fresher than it appears today.

The blue hidden in the browns

Smalt wasn't just for painting blue

In architecture

Rembrandt mixes the smalt with the brown earths at the bottom. Blue glass gives texture, modifies transparency and accelerates drying.

In the shadows

Combined with red lacquers, it produces purples; associated with yellows, it can form greens. It therefore animates several families of tones.

In time

Its irreversible discoloration has brought many areas closer to brown. The current general impression is more monochrome than in 1642.

Consequence: looking only at current photography is not enough to reconstruct the contrasts desired by Rembrandt. Chemical analyzes complete what the eye can no longer see.

Matter reflects light

Impasto, glacis and worn surfaces

The light of La Ronde de nuit also depends on the relief. In white-collar workers, embroidery and certain weapons, the thick paint forms ridges which really capture the lighting in the room. Elsewhere, thin layers let the underlying tones shine through.

Research with AkzoNobel replicated a type of impasto from materials available in the 17th century, including lead white, linseed oil, and egg white. The goal was not to provide a recipe unique, but to understand how Rembrandt obtained a stable and reflective paste.

Wear changes this balance. The dog, for example, appears more whitish today because a clear chalk-rich outline is exposed under abraded layers. The partial disappearance of the cloud of smoke behind the captain also reduces an old contrast.

However, the scene takes place in broad daylight. The modern title describes neither the actual time nor a night patrol. It reflects the material history of the work as much as its spectacular chiaroscuro.

Why does the picture seem so dark?

The palette originally featured a lot of browns and blacks, but the fading of the smalt, the fading of the lacquers, wear and old varnishes further reduced some colored contrasts.

Does the scene take place at night?

No. The company comes out in broad daylight. The late nickname "Night Watch" comes in part from the darkened appearance of the painting.
