Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael

Three giants, three temperaments: the observation of life, the power of the body and the harmony of composition.

Understand in one minute

They do not seek the same perfection

Bringing them together under the label of "Renaissance geniuses" masks their essential difference. Leonardo wants to understand how the world works. Michelangelo gives the body an almost superhuman tension. Raphael transforms the discoveries of the two elders into compositions of sovereign clarity.

Leonard

1452 - 1519

Observation, sfumato, psychology, anatomy and movement of nature.

Michelangelo

1475 -1564

Sculpture, anatomical power, spiritual tension and monumentality.

Raphael

1483 -1520

Balance, intelligible space, grace, synthesis and workshop work.

Three ways to create

The scholar, sculptor and architect of the image

Anatomical study of skull by Leonardo da Vinci

01 · LEONARD

See before painting

His notebooks connect anatomy, hydraulics, optics and art. In his paintings, the outline fades: the sfumato gives rise to forms and expressions through transitions.

Pietà by Michelangelo at the Vatican

02 · MICHELANGELO

Free the figure

He thinks first as a sculptor. Even when painted, his characters seem cut, turned and subjected to an inner energy.

The Transfiguration of Raphael

03 · RAPHAEL

Orchestrate the whole

Raphaël distributes looks, gestures and groups with exceptional readability. Grace excludes neither drama nor invention.

The Virgin, Child Jesus and Saint Anne by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci

The inner life of forms

In Saint Anne', the figures fit together in a pyramid but remain animated by a chain of looks and gestures. The mineral landscape, the skin tones and the drapes belong to the same continuous world.

In Leonardo, anatomy is not used to exhibit knowledge. It gives credibility to movement and depth to emotion. The picture often remains open, repeated, sometimes unfinished: research counts as much as the finished object.

Michelangelo

The body as spiritual language

On the vault of the Sistine Chapel, completed in 1512, the story of Genesis becomes an architecture of bodies. The famous distance between the fingers of Adam and God concentrates creation in an interval.

Michelangelo, however, refuses to be reduced to painting: he thinks he is a sculptor. THE David, there Pietà, the tombs of the Medici and the projects of Saint-Pierre extend the same monumental ambition.

Raphael

Synthesis without coldness

In the Chamber of the Signature, painted between 1508 and 1511, Raphael brings together philosophy, theology, poetry and law. Architecture immediately leads the eye towards Plato and Aristotle.

The character of Heraclitus takes on the features of Michelangelo according to the Vatican Museums, while Raphael represents himself on the right. The work becomes a manifesto of humanist culture and a discreet theater of his contemporaries.

Florence · 1504

The face-to-face of the two battles

Leonardo and Michelangelo receive orders for two walls of the large hall of Palazzo Vecchio: the Battle of Anghiari and there Battle of Cascina. The sets are not completed, but their cards become a school for an entire generation. According to Vasari, the young Raphael comes to Florence attracted by their fame.

Leonard: whirlwind of men and horses, psychological violence, knotted movement.

Battle of Cascina

The body surprised in action

Michelangelo: naked soldiers, surprised as they bathe, get dressed and grab their weapons. The war appears less as a story than as a demonstration of twists, supports and impulses.

The lost card is known through copies and studies: its reputation was immediate among young artists.

Faces and reputation

Three artists, three public images

Their legend was built through works, but also through biographies, portraits and studio stories. These images capture three archetypes: the mysterious scholar, the solitary creator and the accomplished courtier.

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo: the mystery

The slowly repeated works, the unfinished paintings and the thousands of pages of notebooks nourished the image of a universal spirit. There Mona Lisa concentrates the mobility of its expressions, the softness of the modeling and the unity of the landscape.

Portrait of Michelangelo by Daniele da Volterra

Michelangelo: terribilità

His contemporaries admire a power mixed with harshness. His long career, his conflicts with sponsors and his demands have shaped the model of solitary genius.

Self-portrait of Raphael kept at the Uffizi

Raphael: social grace

Young, elegant and capable of leading a vast workshop, Raphael established himself in Rome through his invention as much as through his intelligence of courses and networks.

Patrons and power

Without the courses, there are no "three giants"

The High Renaissance is also a political competition. Florence, Milan, Rome and the French court used art to assert prestige, memory and authority.

Leonard, from court to court

After his Florentine training, he served Ludovico Sforza in Milan, worked for César Borgia, returned to Florence then joined Francis I. Painting, hydraulics, festivals and fortifications form a single court practice.

Michelangelo facing the popes

Julius II entrusted him with his tomb then the vault of the Sistine. The Medici commissioned a chapel and library in Florence. Paul III relaunched his Roman career with the Last judgment and Saint-Pierre.

Raphael, favorite of Rome

Julius II opens the papal apartments to him. Under Leo X, he became architect of Saint-Pierre, responsible for antiquities and designer of tapestry boxes for the Sistine.

An organized rivalry

Patrons bring artists together and compare their responses. In Florence as in Rome, the prestige of a commission increases when it puts masters in competition.

Working methods

Study, extract, compose, direct

Leonard

Observes anatomy, water, light and expressions before merging phenomena into painting.

Michelangelo

Look for the figure contained in the block and construct its frescoes like body architecture.

Raphael

Multiply the drawn variations to make complex groups immediately readable.

Workshops

Assistants and collaborators make large decorations possible, even if the organization varies depending on the master.

Studies of the movement of water in a notebook by Leonardo da Vinci

Drawing is a way of thinking

In Leonardo, he becomes an instrument of knowledge. In Michelangelo, he experiences twisting and mass before marble or fresco. In Raphael, he regulates the relationships between figures and allows transposition through the workshop.

What they have in common is not a unique style, but extreme confidence in the drawing.

Crossed influences

What Raphael learns - then transforms

Leonardo's lesson

Raphael retains the pyramidal groups, the exchange of glances, the atmospheric landscape and the active tenderness of Virgos and Children. However, it clarifies the contours and stabilizes the emotions.

Michelangelo's lesson

It absorbs heroic scale, twists and anatomical force, but integrates them into sets where individual effort never breaks the general order.

His own contribution

Raphaël knows how to make complex without confusing. He transformed the inventions of his elders into a transmissible language that would long dominate academic teaching.

A summary, not a copy

Raphaelesque grace is based on a personal science of rhythm, distance and relationships. It is neither an average nor a compromise.

Major works to compare

Nine milestones to read their careers

Leonard

The Adoration of the Magi reveals young master's ambition; The Last Supper organizes the reaction of the apostles in a unified space; The Mona Lisa pushes the portrait, the sfumato and the mental landscape to their peak.

Michelangelo

The Pietà combines virtuosity and restraint; David transforms a biblical hero into a civic emblem; the vault of the Sistine converts theology into bodily energy.

Raphael

The Beautiful Planter orders tenderness; The Athens School gives architecture to thought; The Transfiguration brings together divine vision and human drama.

The right reflex

Compare not only the subjects, but the way in which each artist leads the gaze: transitions in Leonardo, tensions in Michelangelo, relationships and intervals in Raphael.

Legacy

Three sustainable paths of Western art

Know

Leonardo founded the ideal of the scholarly artist and renewed the psychological portrait as well as atmospheric unity.

Embody

Michelangelo opens the way to mannerism; his sculpture remains a reference by Rodin to modern artists.

Order

Raphael becomes the canon of harmonious composition for the academies, Poussin, Ingres and monumental painting.

There is no winner: everyone defines a different possibility from modern art.

Frequently asked questions

What to remember

Did they really meet?

Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael are in Florence around 1504. The details of their direct exchanges, however, remain less certain than the legend.

Who is the oldest?

Leonardo, born in 1452, precedes Michelangelo by twenty-three years and Raphael by thirty-one years.

Did Raphael copy Leonardo and Michelangelo?

He studies them and transforms their innovations. His capacity for synthesis produces a personal language, not a simple imitation.

Why do we talk about the High Renaissance?

The term designates the moment when perspective, anatomy, ancient references and monumental ambition reach a particularly coherent synthesis, especially in Florence and Rome.

Who worked for Pope Julius II?

Michelangelo paints the vault of the Sistine Chapel while Raphael decorates the papal apartments. These neighboring construction sites are transforming Rome.
