Klimt · 1916 -1918 · unfinished work
Adam and Eve last biblical scene remaining unfinished
Adam and Eve is one of Gustav Klimt's last paintings. The subject comes from Genesis, but Klimt hardly recounts original sin: he transforms Eve into a frontal, luminous, fertile presence, while Adam remains behind her, brown, asleep, almost passive. A biblical scene, yes - but above all a final meditation on the body, desire and origin.

The short answer
A Genesis without a fall, centered on Eve
Adam and Eve is an unfinished oil on canvas by Gustav Klimt, generally dated 1916 -1918 or 1917 -1918 depending on sources. The work is kept at the Belvedere in Vienna.
The subject is biblical, but Klimt does not really represent the narrative episode of the fault. He paints neither a clearly dramatic snake, nor a scene of shame, nor a detailed theological moment. Rather, he retains two presences: Eve, naked, blonde, head-on, conscious; Adam, behind her, darker, with his eyes closed.
This inversion is essential. In many traditional images, Adam dominates or protects. Here, Eve occupies the surface, looks at the viewer, carries light and fertility. Adam appears enveloping but passive. At the end of his life, Klimt returns to an ancient myth to speak once again of the relationship between woman, man, desire and knowledge.
I · Analysis
Adam behind, Eve in front: an inverted composition
The very vertical format tightens the two bodies. The image seems simple, almost frontal, but it reverses several iconographic habits.
The active figure
Eve is placed in front, naked, clear, with her eyes open. She does not hide her body: she looks, she knows, she occupies the painting.
The passive figure
Adam stays behind her, eyes closed. His brown body acts as a protective shadow, but he does not direct the scene.
Anemones
At Eve's feet, colorful flowers are read as signs of fertility. Genesis becomes a garden of bodies.
The contrast of the flesh
Eve's pale skin contrasts with Adam's brown. Klimt depicts an almost tactile opposition.
II · Eve in the center
The mother of humanity rather than the sinner
Belvedere and Google Arts & Culture point out that Klimt is less interested in the” “chute than in Eve as a timeless, original and fertile figure.
| Element | Traditional reading | Reading at Klimt |
|---|---|---|
| Eve | Often associated with temptation and fault. | She becomes the figure of origin, knowledge and the assumed body. |
| Adam | First man, sometimes authority or active companion. | He is withdrawn, almost asleep, as if still ignorant of what Eve already knows. |
| The garden | Narrative place of Genesis. | It is reduced to flowers, animal skin, an atmosphere of fertility and eros. |
| Nudity | After the mistake, she should be ashamed. | At Klimt, it is frontal, luminous, without any gesture of concealment. |
A fascinating detail
The Klimt Database notes that the hands were already indicated in the underlying drawing: Eve could have held an apple and taken Adam by the hand. The unfinished work therefore keeps the promise of a gesture that Klimt never finished.
III · Unfinished work
What incompleteness shows
Klimt died on February 6, 1918. Several late works remain open, suspended between drawing, color and decoration. Adam and Eve part of this last mental workshop.

Naked verticality
The narrow format reinforces the idea of a human column: Eve appears as an original, almost sculptural figure.

The bride
Another big late project, The bride shows the same obsession: body, desire, dream and entwined female figures.

The Fan Lady
Alongside the unfinished works, this portrait shows the late color reaching full maturity.

Interrupted tables
The photograph from the last workshop reminds us that Klimt's late works are not quiet conclusions: they are cleanly cut construction sites.

The work dialogues with several major images: entwined couples, female frontal figures, life cycles, motherhood and decorative sensuality.

Adam and Eve
The biblical scene becomes an image of bodily knowledge rather than a tale of guilt.

Death and Life
Like Adam and Eve, this work thinks of humanity as a group, cycle and colored matter.

Hope II
The feminine as a threshold between birth, fear, desire and symbol strongly crosses the late Klimt.

Water Snakes II
Female bodies fused in water announce Klimt's thinking of desire as a medium.
