What does "tailor-made reproduction" really mean?
The term covers several different requests. The first is to reproduce an old painting or a work missing from the catalog. The client provides the title, the artist and ideally an institutional image in high definition. The workshop studies composition, proportions and feasibility before proposing a format.
The second part of a personal photograph: portrait of a person, couple, family, animal, house or travel landscape. Here, resemblance depends heavily on the sharpness of faces, direction of light and size of subjects in the image. An emotionally important photograph is not always technically sufficient; It is better to transmit several files than to ask the painter to invent invisible details.
The third is an adaptation: merge several sources, modify a background, isolate a character, carefully change the framing or work on a general atmosphere. This category requires a more detailed brief, because each modification takes the result away from the initial reference. The tailor-made service can work on a palette or atmosphere, but not illicitly copy a protected work by a contemporary artist.
In any case, the image must belong to you, be in the public domain or be used with sufficient permission. Reference controls precision
Choose an image that the painter can actually read
A useful reference must be clear, large enough and faithful to the expected colors. For a museum work, choose the official page of the object or an open access institutional platform. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art clearly report images of works in the public domain available in Open Access; these files are more reliable than a compressed and often better documented screenshot.
Resolution
Send the original file, not the image forwarded multiple times via messaging. Eyes, hands, jewelry and textures should remain readable when zooming in.
Color
Avoid automatic filters. If several digital reproductions differ, indicate the one whose colors serve as a reference.
Proportions
A square, portrait and panorama do not become interchangeable without cropping. First ask which area would be cut or rebuilt.
Rights
Retain source and permission. An image accessible online is not automatically free to reproduce.
Add a sharp main view, a second photo for facial details and a clear indication of the desired background.
Send the museum link, the exact title, the artist, the date if known and the precise version when there are several variations.

Choose format without distorting work
Respect the width-height ratio
The format is not just about length in centimeters. It has a ratio of proportions. Going from a vertical photograph to a square canvas requires cutting the top, bottom or sides, unless you reconstruct part of the scene. Before the quote, request a visualization of the framing or draw several frames directly on a copy of the image.
Then think about the wall. A work above a sofa can occupy approximately 60 to 75% of the width of the furniture. A family portrait must remain large enough so that each face is readable from the main position. A very detailed canvas requires more surface area and more distance; a simple composition better supports a moderate format.
