Florence · An interrupted altarpiece becomes a laboratory
The Adoration of the Magi
The unfinished masterpiece where we see Leonardo thinking.
Around Mary and Jesus, a crowd approaches, bows, is surprised and transforms. Behind her, a temple is built while horsemen compete. The work does not only tell the story of Epiphany: it shows an ancient world that is turning upside down.
The short answer
Why is this unfinished panel a masterpiece?
The Adoration of the Magi condenses young Leonardo's research into movement, expression, perspective and light. Mary and Jesus form a calm center. Around them, the Magi and witnesses make up a semi-circle of emotions. Basically, the peace of the temple under construction opposes the tumult of the horses.
Its abandonment does not erase the project: it makes it visible. Some figures remain simple contours, others are modeled by brown shadows, some passages already receive color. We follow the transition from idea to painting almost step by step.

See before interpreting
The entire table, without cropping
The almost square format contains several scenes, but the gaze always returns to Mary and Jesus. Take the time to explore the four corners: the meaning of the painting arises from the contrasts between the center, the crowd and the two backgrounds.
A crowd that thinks with its body
Who looks at who?
Leonardo replaces the orderly procession of traditional worship with a field of emotions. Bodies bend, hands comment, and faces record the revelation.
Mary and Jesus
Their group forms the clearest islet. The Child turns to the gift of the Magus while Mary remains stable in the heart of the tumult.
The three Magi
Kneeling or bowed, they offer gold, incense and myrrh. Their ages and attitudes make worship a succession of human responses.
The witnesses
Old men, young men and sketched figures react with astonishment, meditation, fear or the desire to see better.
Central calm, peripheral energy
How does Leonardo organize such a dense scene?
A pyramid surrounded by a semi-circle
Mary and Jesus form a clear pyramid at the bottom of the vertical axis marked by trees. Around them, the heads of witnesses draw an arc. A relative void protects the sacred group and prevents the crowd from suffocating it.
The gestures create secondary lines: arms outstretched towards the Child, inclined backs of the Magi, gaze that converges. Perspective therefore does not rest only on architecture; it is also emotional.
In the background, Leonardo constructs an almost theatrical opposition. The left is regulated by steps and verticals. The right is carried away by curves, prancing horses and conflicting bodies.
1 · The axis
The trees erected above Marie stabilize the center of the panel.
2 · The circle
The heads and shoulders form a human crown around the revelation.
3 · Contrast
The temple built on the left responds to the unstable battle on the right.
4 · The active vacuum
The space in front of Mary allows the gestures of the Magi to remain readable.
An Epiphany thought of as a change of times
Safe, contextual and discussed symbols
What the Offices document must be distinguished from more hypothetical readings. Incompletion invites interpretation, but it does not justify transforming each trait into a secret code.
The three present
Gold recognizes royalty, incense, divinity and myrrh announces mortality as well as the Passion of Christ.
The temple and peace
The construction site or temple on the left refers to a pacified order, in opposition to the disorder of the horsemen.
Horses in struggle
The equestrian tumult gives an image of the violence of the ancient world, still far from the central revelation.
The laurel
The tree can be linked to resurrection and victory over death.
The palm tree
The palm belongs to the tradition of Passion and martyrdom.
A specific historical battle?
There is no consensus to identify each rider or reduce the episode to a single political event.
From the contract to the museum
Why did Leonardo abandon the altarpiece?
San Donato's order
The Augustinians of San Donato a Scopeto entrusted Leonardo with the main altar panel. The expected deadline is thirty months.
The work is underway
The documents show that he is still working on the project. Drawings of figures, horses and perspective accompany the installation on the wood.
Departure for Milan
Leonardo leaves Florence for the court of Ludovico Sforza. The panel remains at an intermediate stage and will never be taken up by him.
Filippino Lippi replaces the work
After waiting in vain, the monks ordered another altarpiece of the same subject from Filippino Lippi, now also kept at the Uffizi.
From Benci to public collections
The panel was reported by Amerigo Benci, passed into the Medicean collections then permanently joined the Uffizi Gallery.
Return after restoration
After a long intervention by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, the work returns to the room dedicated to Leonardo and a new readability.
Before the panel, dozens of tries
Perspective and figures as laboratories
Build space before filling the stage
Perspective drawing shows a very different method from direct improvisation. Leonardo organizes the planes, axes and levels, then brings the bodies into this structure.
However, the final panel does not mechanically copy the sheet. The steps change, the center tightens and the figures gain density. Drawing is a research instrument, not a fixed instruction.
Each witness has a reaction
The preparatory sheets are not only used to arrange silhouettes. Leonardo seeks distinct physiologies: bent old age, attentive youth, surprise, contemplation, agitation.
This individualization explains why the crowd remains alive despite its numbers. It is never a uniform human setting: it becomes the true psychological subject of Epiphany.
Beneath the surface
How did Leonardo start painting?
A work stopped on several floors
The Uffizi sheet describes a technique combining charcoal drawing, watercolor ink and oil on wood. The painting allows us to see moments normally covered by each other coexist.
2011 -2017 · Study before intervening
What the restoration has really changed
The work was transferred to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in November 2011. After the diagnostics, the decision to intervene was taken in 2012. Cleaning and consolidation made the drawing more readable without inventing the missing parts.
Non-original layers
Dirt, yellowed varnishes, glues, egg white and other old materials blurred the planes and locally threatened the adhesion of the material.
The wooden support
The boards were gradually separating. The support and its holding system have been stabilized while respecting the original structure.
The rule of non finito
The restorers reduced the later additions in a graduated manner. They neither colored the figures left in the drawing nor "finished" Leonardo.
The essential result: better conservation, in-depth knowledge of the creative process and a clearer reading of gestures, plans and rare colored areas.

Room A35 · Leonardo da Vinci
The Offices present the sign with The Annunciation and The Baptism of Christ. This neighborhood makes it possible to follow the transition from Verrocchio's student to the author of an autonomous composition of exceptional ambition.
Start remotely to enter the almost square format and circle of witnesses. Then approach to read the surface conditions, then step back one last time: the tumult becomes architecture again.
The room and visiting conditions may change. Consult the official Office sheet before traveling.

Observe the process in large format
The almost square format retains the relationship between the sacred center, the crowd, the ruins and the horsemen. A large reproduction allows you to follow the different finishing levels without artificially isolating the details.

FAQs on Worshiping the Magi
Why is The Adoration of the Magi unfinished?
Leonardo leaves Florence for Milan even though the panel commissioned in 1481 is not finished. The Augustinians of San Donato a Scopeto await his return, then finally entrust a new altarpiece to Filippino Lippi.
When did Leonardo paint The Adoration of the Magi?
The order was documented in July 1481. Leonardo was still working on the panel in September of the same year and interrupted it before or when he left for Milan in 1482.
Where to see Worship of the Magi today?
The painting is kept at the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, in room A35 dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. As the clashes may change, you must check the official file before the visit.
What are the dimensions of the table?
The official Office sheet indicates 244 × 240 cm. It is a large, almost square panel designed for the high altar of San Donato a Scopeto.
What do the ruins and horses in the background show?
The Offices oppose the construction site or temple associated with peace, on the left, with the tumult of the horsemen, on the right. This opposition transforms Epiphany into a symbolic passage from an old violent world to a new order.
Was the painting repainted during its restoration?
No. The restoration completed in 2017 mainly reduced the non-original layers, consolidated the material and repaired the wooden support. She did not seek to finish the parts left in the drawing state.
Why is the painting so important to understanding Leonardo?
Its incompleteness leaves several stages of work visible: preparatory lines, brown shadows, modeling, rework and rare colored areas. The panel thus functions as a life-size laboratory for his method.
