Museo Leonardo da Vinci - Piazza del Popolo
Installed under the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, this museum focuses on an immediately readable presentation: machines, inventions, anatomical studies, sciences and reproductions of famous images. The official website clearly assumes that no original works by Leonardo are exhibited there.
Its advantage is geographical. It can be inserted between Villa Borghese, the Pincio terrace, Via del Corso and Piazza di Spagna. With children, this continuity avoids a long detour and allows you to keep Leonardo's visit as an interactive break in the middle of the historic center.
What to watch first?

2 · The most practical with the Vatican
Leonardo da Vinci Experience - Via della Conciliazione
This compact exhibition announces more than fifty functional and interactive inventions, as well as a room of copies of paintings made with techniques inspired by the Renaissance. A multilingual audio guide is included according to the official website.
Its main advantage is not to be "more authentic" than the other two: that is its position. It is located between St. Peter's Square and Castel Sant'Angelo. You can visit the Vatican in the morning, have lunch in the Borgo and then devote about an hour to Leonardo's machines.
Why choose it?
- you already have a reservation for St. Peter's or the Vatican Museums;
- you want a short, air-conditioned, machine-centric tour;
- the French audio guide counts more than the monumentality of the decor;
- you travel with a group with different rhythms.
3 · The most spectacular
Mostra di Leonardo - Palazzo della Cancelleria
The presentation of the Palazzo della Cancelleria is distinguished by the scale of certain reconstructions. The official website and Turismo Roma announce nearly fifty machines, distributed around air, water, earth, fire and mechanisms. The full-size assault tank, announced at approximately six meters in diameter and three meters high, can be visited indoors.
Nine holograms explain flying, war, engineering and painting projects. Seven thematic display cases show facsimiles of codices and interactive tablets. The route ends with a unique detour: the submerged tomb of Aulus Hirtius, an ancient vestige discovered under the palace.

The essential detour
Where to see an original work by Leonardo in Rome?
At the Pinacoteca of the Vatican Museums, room IX. THE Saint Jerome is an unfinished autograph painting, dated around 1481 -1482. Its attribution to Leonardo has never been seriously questioned, according to the official Vatican notice.
Incompletion is precisely what makes the panel exceptional. Some areas remain almost drawn, others accumulate veils of paint and transitions of chiaroscuro. We observe the transition from anatomical structure to living modeling - which no reproduction fully restores.
Tradition says that Cardinal Joseph Fesch found the panel cut into several pieces. Pius IX acquired it in 1856 for the Pinacoteca. The painting is today Leonardo's only work in the pontifical collections.

Painted and facsimile copies are useful, but their status should always remain clear.
The content overlaps a lot. Only one is generally enough, completed by the Vatican.

How to look at machines without falling into the myth of the "prophet"?
Leonardo did not "invent" in the modern sense all the objects that museums reconstruct. He observes technical traditions, sometimes copies previous devices, combines them and transforms them. Some sheets are feasible projects; others are studies, variations or ideas never tested.
Always ask: what codex does the reconstruction come from? Was the machine built in its time? Do modern materials modify its operation? This prudence does not diminish Leonardo: on the contrary, it shows its real strength, that of a mind capable of thinking about movement on paper.
