Where to see Van Gogh in the Netherlands outside Amsterdam?
A field guide to see the masterpieces of Kroeller-Müller, walk through the landscapes of Nuenen and continue to the museums and villages of Brabant where Vincent became a painter.

Namely in 2026
Café terrace in the evening not visible in Otterlo until September 16, 2026. The painting is loaned to Japan. On the other hand, of September 15, 2026 to January 3, 2027, the exhibition Van Gogh, All Our Paintings brings together for the first time since 1984 all of Van Gogh's paintings from the museum. Check the official status just before your visit.
Three experiences that cannot be replaced
Otterlo for large paintings, Nuenen to walk in the world of peasants and weavers, Den Bosch to see the originals of the Brabant period as close as possible to their landscapes.
Outside of Amsterdam, there is therefore not a single "other Van Gogh museum", but an exceptional network. The Kroeller-Müller is a world-class art collection. The Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen is an interpretive museum extended by the real village. Het Noordbrabants Museum, in 's-Hertogenbosch, brings together twelve early works, letters and documents.
If you only have one day, choose Otterlo. With two days, add Nuenen. From three days onwards, Den Bosch gives the course its historical depth; Zundert, Etten-Leur, Tilburg and Eindhoven then form the most coherent extensions.

Etten-Leur, Tilburg and Eindhoven complete the vocation, training and cycling routes.
Complete road tripThe car is the smoothest solution for combining Otterlo and several villages. Public transport is possible, but Otterlo, Nuenen, Zundert and Den Bosch do not form a direct rail loop. For a car-free stay, sleep near Arnhem or Ede for Otterlo, then near Eindhoven for Nuenen and Brabant.
Otterlo: the great Van Gogh museum outside Amsterdam

A collection born from the passion of Helene Kroeller-Müller
From 1908, Helene and Anton Kroeller-Müller collected 88 paintings and 172 works on paper by Van Gogh. The Van Gogh Gallery usually presents thirty to forty: enough to follow the transition from the dark tones of Brabant to the yellows of Arles, the rhythms of Saint-Rémy and the last faces.

Café terrace in the evening
The deep blue sky, orange tables and receding perspective make this painting the magnet of the museum. But it is on loan until September 16, 2026. Organize the trip around its return if this work is your top priority.

Van Gogh Village Museum
The museum recounts twenty-three decisive months: Vincent lives with his parents, observes rural professions, draws tirelessly and prepares Potato Eaters. The audio guide is available in French. The visit takes on its full meaning if followed by a walk in the village.

Potato Eaters
The scene summarizes the ambition of the Brabant period: to make people feel a life shaped by working the land. The Nuenen Museum explains the models, the lamp, the head studies and the process; the major originals are kept elsewhere.

The presbytery
The family home is still visible from the outside. The garden, buildings and nearby views enter into several works.

Father's Church
Vincent paints the building for his mother. The small church is one of the most moving landmarks in the center of Nuenen.

The De Groot cottage
The place recalls the models of the 1885 composition. It should not be approached as a frozen setting, but as a fragment of a social landscape.
Three encounters between the paintings and the real places

Van Gogh simplifies volumes and transforms the garden into a dark depth.

Compare the openings, the slope of the roof and the relationship with the garden.

A large diagonal of water leads towards the wheel and the silhouette of the building.

The mill is still recognizable: arrive early or at the end of the day for calmer light.

The lamp concentrates looks, gestures and the table in an almost unescaped space.

The house places the composition in a network of paths, fields and rural families.
Van Gogh's Brabant: originals, birth and vocation

Het Noordbrabants Museum
It is the only museum in the south of the Netherlands that displays original works by Van Gogh. The permanent room brings together twelve early works, letters, personal documents, photographs and interpretation devices.
Locate The Collen Mill, Peasant digging, Still life with bottles and shell, The Presbytery Garden in Nuenen and the portrait of Gordina de Groot. This latest acquisition, the most important in the history of the museum, places one of the models of Potato eaters in the center of the route.

The Collen Mill
Seeing the painting at Den Bosch and then the actual mill near Nuenen is one of the best comparisons of the entire trip. The work does not copy the site: it tightens its lines, darkens the masses and organizes the current.

| Absolute priority | For density of masterpieces: Kroeller-Mueller. To understand the Dutch period: Nuenen + Den Bosch. |
|---|---|
| Order recommended | Otterlo first, then Nuenen and Den Bosch. The clash of colors of Arles and Saint-Rémy then makes the brown tones of Nuenen more eloquent. |
| With children | De Hoge Veluwe's white bikes, Van Gogh Village Museum features and comparisons to real locations make the route very accessible. |
| With little mobility | Favor the three museums. Several sites in Nuenen can be seen from the outside, but the mill and certain paths require additional travel. |
| When to come | Spring and early fall offer beautiful walks. For the full Otterlo set, aim for the exhibition from September 15, 2026 to January 3, 2027. |

What is the best Van Gogh museum outside Amsterdam?
Otterlo's Kroeller-Müller Museum is the main choice. It preserves 88 paintings and 172 works on paper by Van Gogh, of which thirty to forty paintings are usually presented in the Van Gogh Gallery.
Can we see Café terrace in the evening in Otterlo in 2026?
Not before September 16, 2026: the painting is loaned to Japan. His return coincides with the exhibition Van Gogh, All Our Paintings, open from September 15, 2026 to January 3, 2027.
Does the Nuenen Museum have original paintings by Van Gogh?
The Van Gogh Village Museum is above all an interpretive museum. Its strength is to tell the story of the Nuenen period and lead to the real places. To see a set of Brabant originals, go to Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch.
What major works to see at the Kroeller-Müller?
According to the hanging: The Sower, The Langlois Bridge, Four faded sunflowers, Portrait of Joseph Roulin, On the threshold of eternity, a version of Potato eaters, an olive grove and Café terrace in the evening.
How long does it take for the Kroeller-Müller?
Allow around three hours for the museum and sculpture garden. With a walk or bike ride in De Hoge Veluwe, plan on a long half or full day.
What to see on foot in Nuenen?
The Van Gogh Village Museum, the rectory, the small Reformed church, the old tower, the cemetery and several houses or workshop sites are accessible in or near the center. The Collen mill and certain landscapes are further away.
Where to see original Van Goghs in Brabant?
Het Noordbrabants Museum in 's-Hertogenbosch is the only museum in the south of the Netherlands displaying original works by Van Gogh. Its permanent presentation includes twelve, with letters and documents.
Can Otterlo and Nuenen be combined in one day?
Technically yes in the car, but it would be frustrating. Otterlo deserves at least a long half day and Nuenen requires time outside. Two days provide a much more consistent experience.
Is travel possible without a car?
Yes, with train and bus, but connections lengthen the days. Organize two bases - Ede or Arnhem to Otterlo, Eindhoven to Nuenen and Brabant - and check transport times on the date of travel.
Which extension to choose after Nuenen?
Den Bosch has priority for its twelve originals. Zundert comes next for birth and family history; Etten-Leur and Tilburg are ideal for deepening vocation and training.
