The Three Ages of Women childhood, motherhood and old age

A sleeping child, a young naked mother, an old curvy woman: Klimt does not tell the story of a family, but the whole of a life. In this dark and flowery square, beauty, protection, time and death coexist without reconciling.

The short answer

Klimt paints the whole of life in a single collective body

The Three Ages of Women is an oil on canvas painted by Gustav Klimt in 1905. The work belongs to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome. It represents three moments of female existence: childhood, motherhood and old age.

The strength of the painting comes from its contrast. On the right, the mother and child form a soft, closed group, almost protected by an envelope of flowers and patterns. On the left, the old woman stands alone, naked, her face hidden by her hand, her body marked by time. Klimt does not moralize: he places birth, fullness and finitude side by side.

The painting takes up concerns already present in paintings for the University of Vienna: the human body as a place of destiny, sensuality, knowledge and death. But here, the allegory becomes more immediately readable: everyone sees what time does to bodies.

I · Analysis

A composition in two worlds: protection and solitude

Klimt constructs the image on a simple and moving opposition: on the right, childhood protected by motherhood; on the left, old age isolated in front of the void.

The square

A closed image

The almost square format encloses the figures in a sort of symbolic chamber, without landscape or escape.

The mother

The protective curve

The young woman retreats around the child. Motherhood appears as sleep, warmth, envelope.

The child

The beginning

The baby doesn't look at anything. He sleeps: life begins with abandonment, trust and unconsciousness of time.

The old woman

Visible time

The hand in front of the face transforms the elderly body into an image of shame, fatigue, lucidity or withdrawal.

II · Childhood, maternity, old age

Three figures, but not three separate stories

The child is not just a child: he is the future of the body. The mother is not just a mother: she is the moment of fullness, fertility and beauty. The old woman is not only old: she shows what awaits every body.

The composition then becomes almost musical. On the right, the inclined head of the mother and that of the child respond to each other in a peaceful sleep. On the left, the old woman's head falls differently: not into sleep, but into the weight of time. Same inclination, two opposite directions.

Klimt does not seek to erase old age. He places it on the edge of beauty, like a truth that the decor cannot cover.

The work belongs to a family of images where Klimt thinks of the body as a cycle: birth, desire, aging, death and decorative rebirth.

IV · Rome

An Austrian work that has become a major painting in Italian collections

The Galleria Nazionale indicates that the painting is an oil on canvas from 1905, inventory 951, kept in Rome. Google Arts & Culture recalls its exhibition in Berlin in 1905, at the Venice Biennale in 1910, then its purchase by the Italian state after the International Exhibition in Rome in 1911.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding the Three Ages of Women

When did Klimt paint The Three Ages of Women?

Gustav Klimt painted the work in 1905. It was presented the same year in Berlin, then exhibited in Venice in 1910 and in Rome in 1911.

Where is the painting located?

The reference collection is the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome. In July 2026, however, the museum announced a temporary loan to Palazzo Bonaparte until August 23, 2026.

What do the three ages represent?

The child represents the beginning, the young mother fertility and protection, the old woman finitude and the passage of time.

Why is the old woman hiding her face?

The gesture can evoke shame, fatigue, pain or lucidity in the face of time. Klimt voluntarily leaves several possible readings.

Is the painting symbolist?

Yes. He uses bodies as an allegory of the life cycle, in a logic close to the great symbolist works of Klimt.

What is the difference with Death and Life?

The Three Ages shows life in internal progression. Death and Life places death in the face of a living group, as an external threat.

In Klimt, life is not a straight line: it is a fragile circle where the child already sleeps next to old age.

The Three Ages of Women remains one of his most direct images: beautiful, harsh, decorative and deeply human.
