Understanding the St Ives art scene

A small port town that has become one of the great centers of British art

From the end of the 19th century, the clarity of the Atlantic, the railway and the available workshops attracted painters to St Ives. Bernard Leach and Shôji Hamada founded their pottery there in 1920; Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo, Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron then gave the city a decisive place in British modernism. Today, Tate St Ives, Ben Nicholson, Naum Gabo, Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron then gave the city a decisive place in British modernism. Today, Tate St Ives, the Hepworth Museum, Porthmeor Studios and artists' societies coexist with a very dense network of shopping malls, while Newlyn and Penzance extend this history around Mount's Bay.

01

Distinguish between museum and gallery

A museum maintains a collection; a shopping mall represents artists and can convey price, availability and provenance. Artist-led places favor experimentation, workshops and temporary exhibitions.

02

Group visits

Tate, Porthmeor, Back Road, Norway Square, Fore Street and the harbor form a walking loop. Leach Pottery joins from Stennack; book another day in Newlyn, Penzance, Tremenheere and St Just.

03

Check access

Museums and shops have regular hours, but workshops, markets and artist-led spaces sometimes only open for an exhibition, at the end of the week, in season or by appointment. Check the official website the same day.

In St Ives, art history remains a living experience

The dialogue between ocean, workshops and galleries explains why St Ives remains much more than a seaside destination.
