How did Gustav Klimt work? Workshop, models, drawings and habits

Klimt did not work like the romantic image of the inspired painter in front of a single painting. His work is born from a slow back and forth between rapid drawing, living models, a workshop filled with images, very elaborate painting, obstinate silence and a decor thought out right down to the frame.

The short answer

Klimt drew quickly, painted slowly, and thought of the image as a total object

Gustav Klimt's work is based on a very strong contrast: an abundant, fast, everyday drawing, then an often slow, constructed, decorative and almost architectural painting. The sources of the Albertina recall that his work on paper includes nearly 5,000 known drawings, much more than his approximately 300 paintings.

In the workshop, Klimt observes models, repeats poses, looks for a head tilt, a hand, a twist, a resting position. The leaves are not just drafts: they are the place where the image finds its rhythm. Then, in the paintings, he envelops these bodies in gold, dresses, solids, flowers, symbols and decorative surfaces.

His workshop therefore functions like a laboratory: social portraits, monumental friezes, nudes, allegories, decorative compositions and late works are prepared there where the body and the motif almost end up merging.

I · The workshop

A place of withdrawal more than a worldly theater

Klimt worked for a long time in Viennese workshops, then found refuge in Hietzing, in Feldmühlgasse, in 1911. The Klimt Foundation recalls that he created around fifty paintings and hundreds of drawings there until his death in 1918.

Garden

A distance from the city

Klimt likes quiet places: the workshop is not a public stage, but a settling area.

Pictures

A visual memory

Reproductions, objects, textiles and patterns nourish the transformation of the body into a decorative surface.

Rhythm

Stubborn work

The legend of spontaneous genius holds up poorly: Klimt repeats, chooses, simplifies and resumes.

The places that give flesh to his method

To understand how Klimt worked, you have to get away from the painting alone: his workshop, his garden, the drawing institutions and the large public sets each tell part of his practice.

II · Draw to think

At Klimt, drawing is the real driving force

Albertina emphasizes the scale of the graphic corpus: almost 5,000 known drawings. This number says something concrete: Klimt doesn't just draw to prepare a painting. He draws because it's his way of searching.

His drawings can be quick, but they are not neglected. A line is sometimes enough to fix the curve of a neck, the weight of an arm, the fatigue of a body, the momentum of a garment. This economy explains the strength of paintings: beneath the gold, there is a structure of gestures.

Why so many leaves?

Because Klimt doesn't find” a pose: he pursues it. He repeats until the attitude becomes right, almost inevitable.

III · Living models

The body observed before the decorated body

Models are at the heart of his workshop. Getty emphasizes the importance of drawing from a model: Klimt is slow as a painter, but fast and decisive as a designer.

IV · Paint slowly

The final table is a condensation operation

When Klimt moves to canvas, the drawing often disappears under a very constructed surface: dress, mosaic, flowers, solids, ornamental motifs. But the figure does not completely fade. It remains the magnetic center around which the entire decor is organized.

This slowness is seen in large portraits, in the golden period and in late works. Klimt does not only seek resemblance: he creates a presence. The model becomes an icon, an apparition, a living decor.

The surface as skin

In him, the pattern is not added after the fact. It absorbs the body and prolongs the inner state of the character.

V · Habits

A method quieter than spectacular

Klimt leaves few major written theories. His method can be read mainly in drawings, workshop locations, testimonies and the difference between graphic speed and pictorial slowness.

Appearance What Klimt does What this produces
Daily drawing Multiply the leaves, look for poses, repeat the nuances A painting based on a very sure line.
Models Observe the living body in the workshop Less academic, more psychological figures.
Decor Transform dress, background, frame and surface into a system An image where subject and ornament merge.
Withdrawal Work in a protected space, far from the public stage A slow, almost artisanal concentration.

VI · One day possible

From the living model to the board: a chain of decisions

We cannot reconstruct Klimt's day minute by minute, but the works, drawings and testimonies allow us to understand the general logic. The workshop welcomes models, sometimes for long exposures, sometimes for a series of quick sketches. Klimt observes, chooses, dismisses, starts again. Drawing is the first sorting.

Then comes a slower phase: choosing the pose that resists, mentally transferring it into a composition, deciding whether the body will remain visible or will be almost absorbed by the decor. This is where Klimt becomes very special: he does not separate the model, the dress, the background, the frame and the material. The final picture is an overall decision.

In social portraits, this process is even more delicate. You have to maintain enough resemblance to satisfy the command, but enough strangeness to transform the person into an image. Klimt paints less of a” pose than a state: presence, distance, desire, calm, social power or vulnerability.

Frequently asked questions

Understand the Klimt method

Did Klimt draw a lot?

Yes. The Albertina lists nearly 5,000 known drawings, a much larger corpus than her painted work.

Did he work with models?

Yes. Drawing from a model is central in his studio, especially for nudes, poses, portraits and large symbolic compositions.

Did Klimt paint quickly?

No. Museum sources rather emphasize the contrast between a rapid drawing and a slow, elaborate and repeated painting.

Where was his last workshop?

His last workshop was in Hietzing, Feldmühlgasse 11, in what is now Klimt-Villa in Vienna. He used it from 1911 to 1918.

Are Klimt's drawings simple sketches?

No. Many prepare paintings, but they are also autonomous works, very important for understanding one's line.

Why are female role models so present?

Because the female body is one of Klimt's great subjects, from allegories to worldly portraits and late drawings.

Klimt works like a gaze craftsman: he draws until he finds the pose, then transforms the body into a precious surface.

His workshop is not just a place: it is the slow machine that changes a fragile line into a golden icon.
