Ernst Klimt, Franz Matsch and the Company of Artists

Before gold, before Judith, before the university scandal, Gustav Klimt worked with his brother Ernst and his friend Franz Matsch. Together they learned to paint for ceilings, stairs, theaters and palaces: it is the decorative matrix of all his work.

The short answer

The decorator Klimt precedes the modern Klimt

La Company of Artists, or Künstler-Company, brought together Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch in the early 1880s. Their specialty was monumental decoration: ceilings, stairwells, painted glasses, allegories and public commissions.

This first Klimt is not yet the painter of golden sensuality. He is a studio artist, virtuoso, almost academic, capable of blending his style into an architectural setting. But everything is already there: the taste for large format, the love of surfaces, the fusion between painting and architecture, and the idea that images can transform an entire place.

Ernst brings the family bond and the practice of decor. Matsch represents the other possible trajectory: that of an official, brilliant painter, who remained closer to institutional taste. Gustav will use this training to overcome it.

I · Three-voice workshop

La Künstler-Compagnie: succeed together before signing alone

In Ringstrasse Vienna, public buildings demand decorations. The city wants history, prestige, allegory. The three young artists know how to respond to this demand.

Gustav Klimt

The eye of the surface

Gustav learns to distribute bodies in an architectural setting. He becomes a master in the art of occupying a wall without making it confusing.

Ernst Klimt

The partner brother

Ernst works with Gustav in collective orders. His premature death upsets the balance of the group and Gustav's private life.

Franz Matsch

The official companion

Matsch shares training and first orders. Later, his taste will remain more institutional, while Klimt slides towards rupture.

II · Ernst Klimt

The brother in the shadow of the name Klimt

Ernst Klimt is often reduced to a biographical note: “, the brother of Gustav”. It's unfair. It fully belongs to the logic of the Company of Artists, where works are not yet thought of as individual manifestos, but as decorations executed by a workshop.

A death that fractures the workshop

In 1892, Ernst died at just twenty-eight years old. Gustav loses a brother, a work partner and part of the emotional balance of his beginnings. After this date, Gustav's trajectory becomes more solitary, more serious, then more radical.

III · Franz Matsch

The friend who reveals the future gap

Franz Matsch is essential because he shows what Gustav Klimt could have become: a great official decorator, perfectly capable of responding to public orders and imperial taste. Their collaboration is real, long, effective.

But what happens next diverges. Matsch continues the path of institutional painting further. Klimt, after commissions from the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, pushed decorative logic to the point of making it unstable: ornament no longer only serves the building, it becomes the very subject of the painting.

IV · Major projects

Vienna as a life-size workshop

The Company of Artists is part of the imperial city: theaters, museums, ceremonial staircases. To understand Klimt, you have to look at the walls before the easel paintings.

School

Applied arts

Klimt's training is not that of an isolated bohemian painter. It comes from decorative arts, crafts, commissions and the relationship to architecture.

Theatre

Burgtheater

The commission from the Burgtheater gave young artists major visibility. The decor becomes a social place: we also paint the cultural memory of Vienna.

Museum

Kunsthistorisches Museum

The decorations of the museum staircase show Klimt able to dialogue with art history, ancient styles and the official program.

Breakup

Secession

Decorative logic did not disappear in 1897: it changed sides. She leaves academicism to become modernity.

V · What remains with Gustav

Public ceilings during the golden period

Young Klimt first learns to be readable, prestigious, decorative. The mature Klimt will retain this science, but it will return it to symbol, desire and ambiguity.

Surface

It's all about the skin of the image

The golden backgrounds of maturity extend the decorative surfaces of the beginnings. The wall becomes a painting, then the painting becomes a precious wall.

Allegory

From official language to murky symbol

The first figures are legible and institutional. Later, the allegory becomes more sensual, more disturbing, less obedient.

Architecture

Think in large format

Klimt doesn't just compose scenes: he organizes spaces. This monumental thought explains the power of his most famous works.

Here are the visuals that help best: portraits, Viennese construction sites, sets from the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum, then works by Klimt where the decorative heritage remains visible.

Frequently asked questions

Understanding the decorative beginnings of Gustav Klimt

Who was part of the Company of Artists?

The Künstler-Compagnie brings together Gustav Klimt, his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch. They mainly collaborate on monumental decorative commissions in Vienna.

What is Ernst Klimt's role?

Ernst Klimt is Gustav's brother and partner in decorative beginnings. His death in 1892 marked a significant break in Gustav's life and career.

Was Franz Matsch as important as Klimt at the beginning?

Yes, in the first orders. Matsch is a central collaborator and a recognized painter. The difference appears later, when Gustav moves away from official taste.

Why talk about decoration to understand Klimt?

Because Klimt comes from applied arts and architectural decor. Its golden period preserves this logic of surface, ornament and integration between figure and space.

What places to see in Vienna for this period?

The Burgtheater, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Secession building, the Belvedere and the Leopold Museum allow you to follow the evolution of Klimt in the city.

Does the Company of Artists announce the Viennese Secession?

Indirectly, yes. It forms Klimt with monumental decor; the Secession will then transform this skill into modern language and an artistic manifesto.

Before being the golden icon of Vienna, Gustav Klimt was a painter of walls, ceilings and teams.

It is precisely this decorative origin that makes his mature work so powerful: gold, pattern and body are never mere effects. They come from a profession learned in architecture itself.
