Understanding the Frankfurt am Main art scene
A city of museums, galleries and collectors
A banking city and international crossroads, Frankfurt has also built a strong artistic identity thanks to its private foundations, the Städelschule, the Städel and the Museumsufer network. The streets around Fahrgasse and Braubachstrasse form the commercial heart, while Sachsenhausen aligns institutions on both banks of the Main. Frankfurt Art Experience announced in 2026 more than fifty openings, thirty-six galleries and twenty offspaces or institutions: one ideal density to combine cultural visit and search for works.
Start with the Altstadt
Fahrgasse, Braubachstrasse and the Römer bring together shopping malls, photography, Frankfurter Kunstverein, SCHIRN and MMK. This is the easiest area to explore on foot.
Cross to Museumsufer
The Städel, the Liebieghaus, the Museum Angewandte Kunst and several specialized museums run along the Main. Allow half a day if you want to enter more than one collection.
