Art galleries in York: directory, map and art districts
28 galleries, museums, workshops and art centers, including 19 addresses offering works for sale
From the collections of Exhibition Square to the galleries of Stonegate, from the workshops of South Bank to excursions to Pocklington, Malton, Harrogate and Thirsk: a verified directory to build a day - or a weekend - around art.
Two thousand years, still in creation
From Minster to Workshop
York does not have a single "gallery district": its art scene follows the medieval streets of the center, passes through Fossgate and Micklegate, then extends to the campuses and several art towns of North Yorkshire.
Roman, Viking, ecclesiastical and Georgian history gives an exceptional setting to the collections here. York Art Gallery connects old masters, prints and British ceramics; a few blocks away, Stonegate and Low Petergate concentrate established shopping malls. The new Heslington Hall gallery and the York St John spaces simultaneously bear witness to a moving university scene.
Fossgate and Walmgate are the best starting points for contemporary art, urban art and printmaking. South Bank opens the workshop door; Pocklington and Malton offer a more intimate loop; Harrogate and Thirsk complete the journey with public collections and a particularly dense art market. All addresses have been checked on their official website; check the calendars before departure.
Three benchmarks
Read the directory carefully
The same word "gallery" here covers very different realities. These three keys avoid bad expectations and make visits smoother.
Museum or shopping mall?
A museum maintains a collection and organizes exhibitions; the visit does not involve the sale of works. A shopping mall represents artists, advises collectors and offers pieces for purchase. Yellow badges only indicate the places where this sale was verified.
What does artist-led mean?
An artist-led place is developed by artists or collectives. It favors experimentation, production, residencies and conversation rather than permanent stock. Openings often follow exhibitions: check the calendar, especially outside openings.
Group visits
Exhibition Square, Bootham, Stonegate and Low Petergate can be explored on foot. Fossgate and Walmgate form a second compact loop; South Bank easily extends the day. Pocklington, Malton, Harrogate and Thirsk require another trip.

Nineteen locations in the directory carry the yellow "Works for Sale" badge. They range from the center's historic galleries to the independent spaces of Pocklington, Malton, Harrogate and Thirsk.
Are museums free?
Several university venues and the Mercer Art Gallery offer free entry; York Art Gallery applies ticketing depending on the type of visit. Always check the official website for today's rates.
Can you visit everything without a car?
Central York, Fossgate, Micklegate and South Bank are very easy to explore on foot or by bus. Campuses are served by public transport; a complete loop to Pocklington, Malton, Harrogate and Thirsk requires more preparation.
