Art galleries in Exeter: directory, map and artistic districts
30 galleries, museums, workshops and art centers, including 16 addresses offering works for sale
From Queen Street to the banks of the Exe, from the galleries of Topsham and Exmouth to East Devon, Dartmoor, Totnes and Torbay: a verified directory to compose a day - or a weekend - around art.
Red stone, river and creation
From Exe to workshop
Exeter does not have a single "gallery district": its art scene connects Queen Street, Gandy Street, the cathedral and the quays, then follows the Exe to the estuary before radiating throughout Devon.
RAMM brings together fine arts, decorative arts and local history; Exeter Phoenix and Maketank carry current creation, while Positive Light Projects gives a stronghold to photography. The campus adds an image museum and an outdoor sculpture trail.
Beyond the center, Topsham, Lympstone and Exmouth form an easy first loop. Honiton, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton structure East Devon; Bovey Tracey and Teignmouth open towards Dartmoor and Teignbridge; Totnes, Dartington and Torbay complete the trip. All addresses have been checked on their official website; check calendars before departure.
Three benchmarks
Read the directory carefully
The same word "gallery" here covers very different realities. These three keys avoid bad expectations and make visits smoother.
Museum or shopping mall?
A museum maintains a collection and organizes exhibitions; the visit does not involve the sale of works. A shopping mall represents artists, advises collectors and offers pieces for purchase. Yellow badges only indicate the places where this sale was verified.
What does artist-led mean?
An artist-led place is developed by artists or collectives. It favors experimentation, production, residencies and conversation rather than permanent stock. Openings often follow exhibitions: check the calendar, especially outside openings.
Group visits
Queen Street, Gandy Street and the cathedral can be explored on foot; the quays and Sidwell Street easily extend the day. Topsham -Exmouth, East Devon, Dartmoor -Teignbridge and Totnes -Torbay then form four distinct loops.
