Georg Klimt goldsmith, brother and frame designer for Gustav
In the dazzling shadow of Gustav Klimt, Georg Klimt works with metal, relief, border and object. Ziseleur, sculptor, teacher and younger brother, he recalls one essential thing: among the Klimts, gold is not just a color. It's a family profession.
Georg Klimt, photographed in 1905. Little known to the general public, he nevertheless plays a valuable role in the transition between painting, decorative arts and Viennese metal.
The short answer
Georg Klimt is the brother who transforms Klimt's gold into a real object
Georg Klimt is the youngest brother of Gustav and Ernst Klimt. Born in Vienna in 1867 and died in 1931, he is not a painter in the strict sense: he becomes a ziseleur, sculptor, medalist, goldsmith and craftsman. Where Gustav builds pictorial surfaces, Georg works with hard material: metal, relief, border, sign, frame, decorative ironwork.
Its importance comes from this discreet but decisive position. It helps to understand why Gustav Klimt's art so often seems to go beyond the canvas. The frames of Pallas Athena and of Judith I, executed by Georg based on Gustav's drawings, are not simple accessories: they extend the image and bring painting into the world of Viennese decorative arts.
Georg Klimt is also a family witness. His chronicle of the Klimt family, preserved by the Klimt Foundation, is a valuable source for reconstructing the brothers' humble origins, learning, and connections.
I · A family of artisans
Before fame, the Klimts came from the profession
The father, Ernst Klimt the Elder, is a gold engraver. Gustav becomes a painter, Ernst a decorative painter, Georg a metal craftsman. This family background explains the constant proximity between image, precious surface, decor and object.
Ernst Klimt Sr
The profession of gold engraver placed the family very early in the world of precision, metal and ornament.
Gustav and Ernst
The two elders followed the path of decorative painting and first worked in large architectural programs.
Georg
He chooses applied arts: metal sculpture, medals, jewelry, frames and objects.
Gold as Culture
Among the Klimts, gold is not only symbolic: it is linked to a learned material culture.

II · Ziseleur and sculptor
A metal artist, not just an assistant
Georg Klimt also follows the path of the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts. It is formed in a universe where the artist is not separated from the craftsman: drawing, modeling, chiseling, decorating, building an object are part of the same culture.
From the 1890s he worked as an independent craftsman and also taught artistic metal at the Vienna School of Art for Women and Girls. This position is important: Georg is not “the brother of” by accident. It fully belongs to the world of Vienna 1900, where the decorative arts want to compete with painting.
The right word: ziseleur
The ziseler works the metal on the surface: he modulates, incises, pushes back or takes up the relief. It’s a profession of nuance. This precision explains why Georg could materialize Gustav’s ideas without reducing them to a simple utilitarian framework.
III · Frames and tables
Pallas Athena and Judith I: when the frame becomes part of the work
Georg executes the metal frames of two capital works based on designs by Gustav. This changes the way we look at Klimt: the border is not neutral, it contributes to meaning.

Pallas Athena
The metal frame, executed by Georg Klimt after Gustav, reinforces the warrior and sacral figure. Painting almost becomes an object of goldsmithing.

Judith I
Judith's image is based on a tension between flesh, gold and border. The frame contributes to the precious frontality of the work.
Frame is not contour
In a classic painting, the frame often separates the work from the wall. At Klimt, it can become a threshold, jewel, reliquary and extension of the painted surface.
IV · Viennese Secession
Lost doors, but a very clear idea: uniting paint, metal and architecture
The Klimt Database and the notices on the Klimt family remind us that Georg is also carrying out the postponed work on the doors of the Secession building, now lost since 1945. Even if these doors are no longer visible, the information is crucial: Georg participates to the material image of the Viennese Secession.
This role illuminates the spirit of Vienna 1900. Artists no longer just want to produce isolated paintings. They are looking for a total work: facade, poster, furniture, jewelry, frame, fabric, mosaic, book and painting.
A brother in the network
Gustav also recommended Georg to Secession artists. The younger brother therefore becomes a relay between the family workshop and modern commissions.

Georg helps connect places that are separated too quickly: workshop, museum, Secession building, family and applied arts.

The workshop
The world of Klimt is also a material space: canvases, frames, models, objects, reproductions and tools.
