Van Gogh in the Drenthe : peatlands, isolation and dark landscapes
For less than three months, Vincent van Gogh followed the canals, peat barges and silhouettes of workers in the northeast of the Netherlands. A short, solitary and capital countryside, where the shadow never erases the color.

The short answer
Why does Drenthe matter in Van Gogh's life?
Van Gogh arrived in Drenthe at the age of thirty, after the breakdown of his life together with Sien Hoornik in The Hague. He seeks both a lower cost of living, a rural territory that is still poorly industrialized and subjects that seem close to Millet: farmers, collectors, peat huts, fields and low horizons.
The stay is not a happy retirement. The painter works almost without a companion, struggles to find models, faces rain, cold and financial tensions with Theo. Yet he does not only describe a hostile region. In his letters he marvels at the moor, the canals, the evening effects and the variety of a country that seems monotonous at first glance.
Drenthe is therefore a laboratory. Van Gogh simplifies shapes, stretches horizons and understands that browns can vibrate with lilacs, rusts, muted greens and small lights. Peasant subjects and the palette of earth announce Nuenen; the desire to paint a place like an interior experience already announces the more famous countryside of Arles and Saint-Rémy.
A twelve-week campaign
From The Hague to Nuenen, step by step
The timeline shows continuous movement. Van Gogh does not settle into the abstract "Drenthe": he learns the territory by train, canal, walk and a memorable excursion.
The last train
He leaves The Hague and arrives late in Hoogeveen. The break with Sien, debts and the need for a new environment weigh on this departure.
Hartsuiker's
He stayed with Albertus Hartsuiker for about two weeks. He walks, observes the buckwheat fields and tries to understand the flat landscape.
The barge east
It travels by tow boat to Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord. Passengers, canal and cargo provide a social scene as much as a motif.
Peat at work
From the Scholte Inn, he explores peat bogs, huts and waterways. He paints the boat, the women and the evening fire.
A day in Zweeloo
Leaving before dawn, he sees the church, the fields and a shepherd with his flock. He thinks of Liebermann and Millet throughout the journey.
Leave the Drenthe
The cold, the loneliness, the difficulties of role models and the tensions with Theo prevail. He joins his parents in Nuenen.

The key work October 1883
How to read The Peat Boat ?
A work scene, not a navy
The boat transports the extracted and dried peat. Van Gogh directly connects landscape, energy and human work.
A deliberately crushed horizon
The bank and vegetation close the depth. The gaze does not escape: it remains at the level of the canal and the load.
Two almost absorbed figures
The characters do not dominate nature. Their clothes, the boat and the water belong to the same brown-green accord.
Already expressive material
Short keys and irregular contours prevent the pattern from becoming documentary. Moisture seems to penetrate the surface.
Look closely
Four details, four decisions
These framings do not replace the entire work. They allow us to understand how Van Gogh organizes a small format canvas with very few elements.

The low sky
A thin, clear breath is enough to make you feel the expanse without opening up a vast panorama.

The mass of the boat
The dark shell becomes the horizontal axis that carries the entire scene.

Bodies at work
A few vertical accents are enough: posture matters more than face.

Mirrorless Water
Channel is not transparent. Dull brush strokes give it weight and slowness.

Canals, peat and displacement
The landscape is an economy
The peat bog is not untouched nature for Van Gogh. It is a territory dug, cut up, drained and transported. Canals connect pits, villages and markets. The barge therefore becomes an essential motif: it carries fuel, but also workers and travelers.
In letter 395, he explains that the country which initially appears uniform reveals great variety as soon as one walks and looks. He refuses to decide in advance what he should find: studies must gradually identify the character of the place.
Plant material accumulated in wetlands, extracted then dried to serve as fuel.
A transport infrastructure that transforms geography and orders the scenes observed by the painter.
Cut, turn, stack, load: the landscape preserves traces of human gestures everywhere.
Van Gogh seeks less topographical description than an agreement between atmosphere, objects and bodies.
Letter 395 · October 12 or 13, 1883
This apparently monotonous country contains, for those who move forward and look, a succession of profoundly different motives.Faithful paraphrase of the letter to Theo: Van Gogh wants to let the studies reveal the character of the territory.
A complex solitude
Why does Van Gogh feel isolated?
The word "isolation" should not turn the stay into a romantic legend. It designates concrete difficulties which accumulate as the days get shorter.
A real freedom, which has become an impasse
At first, the distance allows Van Gogh to breathe after The Hague. He can walk all day and work in the middle of a landscape that surprises him. But the absence of another artist ends up weighing on him. Anthon van Rappard, who had spoken to him enthusiastically about Drenthe, did not agree with him.
The models are difficult to hire, the materials cost, the hostels are not workshops and bad weather limits outdoor sessions. The relationship with Theo revolves around money and moral support. In November, Vincent oscillates between the desire to remain faithful to his life as a painter and the feeling of being abandoned.
He therefore leaves less because Drenthe would have ceased to be beautiful than because he no longer sees how to continue there sustainably.
Without an artistic network
No academy, few collections and no daily work companion to compare studies.
Rain, wind, short days
Wet autumn makes traveling and working on the pattern more and more difficult.
Fragile confidence
Residents do not pose easily. Van Gogh often has to draw moving or memory figures.
Dependence and tension
Financial support remains vital, but correspondence reveals a worried and sometimes conflicting sibling relationship.
A rare corpus
The works of the Drenthe to know
The letters mention at least eighteen studies, many of which have disappeared. Modern counts vary according to techniques and attributions: it is better to speak of a small surviving set than of an absolutely closed number.

The Peat Boat with two figures
The most synthetic picture of the stay: waterway, fuel, characters and low horizon form a single system.

Peasant burning weeds
A small flame becomes the optical center of an evening landscape. Darkness is built to make light visible.

Women in the bog
The silhouettes are small, but they structure the entire field. Human work gives the scale of the expanse.

Peat bog in the Drenthe
Rust, lilac and gray bands show that the dark period is also a search for colorful relationships.

The tiny light that organizes the night
Van Gogh describes evening fires and their effects in his correspondence. Here, the flame does not dissipate the darkness: it gives it a measure.
Dark does not mean monochrome
The Drenthe palette
Van Gogh is still far from the yellows of Arles, but he is already learning to make muted colors react. Melancholy comes from their relationships, not from an absence of color.
Green Black
Wet vegetation, coats and shore masses. Colorful darkness rather than neutral black.
Peat brown
Floor, fuel, roof and hull respond to each other. Economic matter becomes pictorial matter.
Rust
A warm accent in the moor, a bank or a field is enough to break the general torpor.
Lilac
The purple of the skies and lands cools the brown ones and announces Van Gogh's interest in complementary ones.
Fire
A yellow or orange light brings the whole scene together, as in Peasant burning weeds.

The photographs do not claim to show a landscape that has remained intact since 1883. They give a concrete scale at three points along the route: accommodation, the excursion to Zweeloo and the peat bog.

From Drenthe to Nuenen
What Van Gogh takes with him
On December 5, 1883, he left the province, but not the problems it posed for him. In Nuenen, he deepened the answers.
The peasant as the central subject
The worker is no longer an animated detail of the landscape. He becomes the bearer of a physical and social experience.
A constructed pallet of earth
Brown, green, gray and colored black will form the basis of Nuenen's paintings, right down to the Potato eaters.
The horizon as rhythm
Canals, fields, roofs and moors teach Van Gogh to organize space by bands rather than by classical depth.
The series as a method
Multiplying the studies of a territory allows him to identify its character. This method will return to Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers.

Frequently asked questions
Understand everything about Van Gogh in Drenthe
When did Van Gogh stay in Drenthe?
From September 11 to December 5, 1883, a little less than three months. He first arrived in Hoogeveen, then stayed mainly in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord.
Why did he go to Drenthe?
After the break with Sien in The Hague, he looked for a less expensive, rural place favorable to work on the motive. His friend Anthon van Rappard had also spoken to him about the region.
Where did Van Gogh live?
He first stayed with Albertus Hartsuiker in Hoogeveen, then at Hendrik Scholte's inn in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord. This second address is today Van Gogh Huis Drenthe.
How many works did he paint in the Drenthe?
The letters evoke at least eighteen studies, but most are lost. Institutions today speak of a small corpus of paintings, watercolors and drawings; the figure varies depending on the scope and attributions.
What are the best-known works of the Drenthe?
The Peat Boat with two figures, Peasant burning weeds, Women in the bog, Peat bog in the Drenthe and Landscape with a farm are among the most often cited works.
Why are the landscapes so dark?
Van Gogh works in autumn, in a humid environment, with a still Dutch palette. But the works are not monochrome: they combine browns, greens, grays, rusts and lilacs.
Was Van Gogh depressed in Drenthe?
His letters express loneliness, worry and tension, but also enthusiasm for the landscape and pleasure of work. A simplistic diagnosis would erase this ambivalence.
What did he see in Zweeloo?
On November 1, 1883, he observed the church, the cottages, the fields and a shepherd with his flock. He associates this landscape with the painters Millet and Max Liebermann.
Why is he leaving Drenthe?
The cold, the rain, the difficulty in finding models, the lack of artistic companionship and the material tensions make the stay difficult. He leaves to join his family in Nuenen.
Can we visit Van Gogh Huis Drenthe?
Yes. The Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord House Museum presents the accommodation of the former Scholte Inn. Check the days and times on the official website before traveling.
What link exists between Drenthe and Nuenen?
Drenthe consolidates Van Gogh's interest in peasants, work, farms and land colors. This research intensified in Nuenen in 1884 -1885.
Have the places photographed remained the same since 1883?
No. The house and the church remain, but the canals, roads, villages and peat bogs have changed. The photos serve as current landmarks, not a perfect reconstruction.
