Buying Guide · Hand Painted Reproduction
Price of a painting reproduction: what you really pay
A fair price doesn't just correspond to an image. It pays for a surface area, pictorial difficulty, materials, workshop time and a controlled result.
This guide gives you a concrete method for reading a quote, comparing offers that really talk about the same object and choosing the level of construction adapted to your wall, your outlook and your budget.
Asking the price of a reproduction without specifying its technique is like asking the price of a piece of furniture without saying whether it is a decorative poster, an industrial table or a cabinet piece. The word "reproduction" designates several objects: paper print, canvas print, image printed then enhanced, copy entirely painted with a brush or custom adaptation. The figures only become comparable after defining what will be delivered.
A hand-painted reproduction is a new painting. The artist works from a reference image, reconstructs the drawing, prepares the mixtures and places the layers on a contemporary support. It has neither the age, nor the provenance, nor the heritage value of the original kept at the museum. Its price corresponds to the current work necessary to find a composition, a light, a palette and a presence of material.
This distinction avoids two errors. A low price can be consistent for mechanical printing, but it does not allow judging an oil on canvas executed manually. Conversely, a high amount proves nothing if the offer remains unclear on the support, the part actually painted, the alterations, the packaging and the delivery.
Anatomy of price
Four quick questions before looking at the amount
The prestige of the artist depicted is not the main explanation. It is above all the surface area, the complexity, the requested rendering and the logistics that make the work evolve. Start with these four benchmarks: they allow misleading comparisons to be immediately ruled out.
Painting or printing?
A fully painted oil involves drawing, mixing, layering and rework. A print reproduces the image by a mechanical process.
What real surface area?
Dimensions should be compared in width and height. A doubling in both directions quadruples the surface to be worked.
What level of detail?
Precise faces, hands, architecture, foliage and ornaments require more control than large, simple masses.
What price returned?
Rolled or mounted canvas, frame, packaging, insurance, transportation and taxes must be included or clearly separated.
Factors 1 to 3
Surface, design and material change the number of decisions
The format first acts mathematically. A 120 × 80 cm canvas is not "a little larger" than a 60 × 40 cm canvas: it offers four times more surface area. More preparation, color and gestures are required, then a stiffer frame, more careful handling and bulkier packaging.
Complexity, however, is not proportional to the number of visible objects. A seemingly sober portrait can require great precision in the eyes, mouth and skin transitions. A very lively landscape can be constructed by large masses. Areas must be identified where a small error modifies expression, depth or general balance.
Factors 4 to 6
Support, control and transport finish constructing the quote
A canvas is not a neutral support. Its weaving, weight and preparation modify absorption, grip and rendering. The frame must remain stable: the depth of the bars, the quality of the wood and the presence of crosspieces become particularly important as the format increases.
Control also has value. An intermediate or final photograph allows you to check framing, proportions and color ratios before departure. You need to know how many retouches are included, on what criteria they can be requested and when validation becomes final.
Finally, compare what actually happens to you. A rolled canvas is more easily transported but must be mounted locally. A canvas on a frame is closer to the final attachment, while requiring greater protection. A particular frame, crate, insurance or delivery can significantly move the total.
The right quote doesn't just announce a number: it tells the subject, the stages and the arrival.
Support + execution + control + packaging + transportFrom file to table
Workshop time follows a series of steps, not a "print" button
The timeline sheds light on part of the price. Some phases may overlap; others require the previous layer to be sufficiently stable. Duration depends on work, format and technique. A realistic range is better than an identical promise for all paintings.
Compare on equal terms
The reading table of a serious quote
Place several offers side by side and fill out this grid. An empty box is not necessarily a defect, but it raises a question. The aim is to prevent an apparently cheaper quote from leaving you responsible for assembly, adaptation of the format or unforeseen delivery.
| Post | To be specified | Why it matters | Reassuring signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process | Printed, enhanced or fully painted | Defines the very nature of the product compared | Direct description, without ambiguous formula |
| Dimensions | Painted waist, ratio and edges | Avoid reframing or unanticipated margin | Width × height confirmed in writing |
| Support | Canvas, preparation and chassis type | Influences rendering, stability and assembly | Rolled or mounted option clearly indicated |
| Rendered | Smooth, glaze, touch or impasto | Directs gestures and number of passages | Expectation related to the style of the work |
| Validation | Photos, retouching and limitations | Frame the dialogue before shipment | Control time and corrections defined |
| Delay | Production, stabilization and transit | Separate workshop and delivery | Realistic fork with steps |
| Price rendered | Frame, packaging, taxes and transportation | Finally allows you to compare the totals | Included and options presented separately |
Project levels
Spend better by prioritizing what should remain faithful
A budget does not require reducing everything in the same way. Start with what produces the identity of the work: general silhouette, large value ratios, dominant color, face, gesture or rhythm of touch. Secondary details can sometimes be simplified without losing the presence of the painting.
Exact framing, well-placed figures and a coherent perspective structure the reading several meters away. Correcting these elements after the fact is difficult; they must be validated early.
The relationship between light, dark, hot and cold areas matters more than an isolated color seen on a screen.
Face, hands, horizon, architecture or central pattern: identify areas where the eye returns immediately.
Ask for relief where it serves the writing, not a uniform texture added to artificially give a sense of value.
Edges, tension, protection and packaging are less visible in the photo, but decisive upon receipt.
With a limited envelope, it is often better to have a slightly more measured and well executed format than a very large canvas whose essential passages are neglected.
Good economics protects what you actually want to watch.Format and part
The right size avoids paying for poorly proportioned canvas
Measure the wall, but also the furniture, the setback distance, the passages and access to the room. The format must maintain the orientation of the work and communicate with the space. A large painting creates a strong presence; it also requires more painted surface, a more rigid structure and more demanding transport.
Above a couch
Center the work on the furniture rather than the entire wall. A coherent width and a breathable space between backrest and canvas bring the two elements together.
A wide landscape
A horizontal composition can accompany the table. Check what it will look like sitting, standing and from the entrance to the room.
Short distance detail
A medium format allows you to observe the key without having to move back. The finesse must remain readable, but does not justify a canvas that is too bulky.
Weight and handling
Staircase, elevator, door and wall type may require a rolled canvas or a frame mounted on site. Check them before ordering.
Double only the width doubles the surface area. Double the width and height of the quadruple.
This progression explains why a large format is not calculated by simply adding centimeters.Works available
Four reproductions, four pictorial difficulties
These active sheets do not form a universal price list: dimensions, options and destination remain to be confirmed. Above all, they show that the subject alone is not enough to estimate the work. Van Gogh's touch, Monet's mists, Klimt's ornament and the variety of Sunflower yellows call for different answers.

The Impressionist collection in the foreground
Impressionist landscapes and scenes are particularly useful for understanding the price of a reproduction: their apparent spontaneity is based on precise relationships of light, temperature and touch. The Impressionist collection is therefore presented as the main entry point, then supplemented by three universes where material, ornament and construction evolve.

The price of a reproduction in eight answers
What is the average price of a painting reproduction?
An isolated average is of little use, because the term reproduction can refer to a print, an enhanced canvas or a completely manual painting. To compare, set the same process, the same dimensions, the same type of support and a delivered price including options, packaging and delivery.
Why does a large format cost significantly more?
Because the surface area increases faster than a single dimension. If width and height double, it is multiplied by four. The needs for canvas, preparation, painting, frame rigidity, handling and protection are also increasing.
Is a very famous work necessarily more expensive to reproduce?
No. Notoriety is not the best indicator of work. The design, transitions, patterns, material, format and level of fidelity required are more decisive. A clean image can be very subtle; a dense scene can sometimes be organized by large masses.
How to recognize a reproduction that is actually hand painted?
The sheet must clearly describe the process. Ask for detailed views and, if possible, production or control photographs. A few highlights of color applied to a printed image do not constitute a painting entirely executed with a brush.
Is it better to receive the canvas rolled or on a frame?
A rolled canvas reduces the transport volume and can be mounted by a local framer. An already stretched canvas comes closer to the final hanging, but its packaging is larger. The best choice depends on the format, destination and access to a reliable professional.
Can we change the dimensions of a famous painting?
Yes, but keeping the original proportions avoids arbitrary cropping. If your wall imposes another ratio, ask if the workshop provides a margin, a reasoned extension or an adaptation of the framing, then validate this decision before the start of painting.
Why is a high definition image important?
It helps read framing, values, details and color ratios. It does not guarantee good copying on its own, because a bright screen and an actual painting do not react in the same way, but it avoids starting from already lost information.
What should be confirmed before paying a deposit?
Validate the reference work and image, dimensions, orientation, edge processing, media type, level of detail, material rendering, control photos, retouching included, estimated time, packaging, delivery and total delivered cost.
