Master, parent and opponent

Anton Mauve and Van Gogh

In The Hague, Mauve puts Vincent in front of a still life for the first time, corrects his watercolors and teaches him how to construct a painting. A few months later, the two men hardly speak to each other anymore. However, Van Gogh will never forget this master by marriage.

Who was Mauve to Van Gogh?

Anton Mauve was both a relative by marriage, an already recognized painter and Vincent van Gogh's first true mentor in painting. He had married Ariëtte "Jet" Carbentus, cousin of Vincent and Théo. At the end of 1881, he welcomed Vincent into his studio in The Hague, directed him towards watercolor then towards oil and gave him a concrete working method.

Their relationship broke down in the spring of 1882. Vincent's letters evoke Mauve's disapproval, the tensions around Sien Hoornik and a very harsh judgment on the young artist's character. But the breakup erases neither learning nor admiration: in 1888, after Mauve's death, Van Gogh dedicated a pink orchard bearing the inscription to his widow Memory of Mauve.

The master of The Hague

A painter of tone, air and everyday work

Born in 1838, Mauve was already a sought-after watercolorist when Vincent wanted to become an artist. Its beaches, its muddy paths, its herds and its farmers do not tell of great dramas: they make you feel the humidity, the wind, the time of day and the fatigue of ordinary gestures.

This tonal painting, often gray or earthy, belongs to the Hague School. She teaches Vincent that a modest subject can become monumental if the values, atmosphere and material are right.

TopicsBeaches, sheep, paths, peasant women and rural works.
TechniqueControlled watercolor, linked tones, diffused light.
ReputationEstablished artist, present on the international market.
InfluenceSee nature as a set of relationships, not as an inventory.
Family bond

"Cousin", yes - but by marriage

The formula is often shortened. Anton Mauve is not a blood cousin of Vincent: he enters the family by marrying Jet Carbentus.

Vincent and Théo van GoghTheir mother, Anna Carbentus, belongs to the Carbentus family.
Ariëtte "Jet" CarbentusCousin of Vincent and Théo, she is the family link.
Anton MauveHusband of Jet: he is therefore Vincent's cousin by marriage.
Why does this detail matter? He explains the initial closeness, but also the social and family expectations that weigh on their relationship. Mauve is not an academy professor recruited by Vincent: he is a respected elder, accessible thanks to relatives, who briefly agrees to guide a twenty-eight-year-old beginner.
Landmarks

A short relationship, a lasting mark

The active teaching period only lasts a few months. Its importance is therefore not measured by its length, but by the moment it occurs: Vincent moves from drawing to painting.

1873 - 1876

Vincent already knows Mauve through the family and the Goupil community. He admires his success and his knowledge of the profession.

Nov. 1881

In The Hague, Mauve installs Vincent in front of cabbages, hooves and simple objects: first experiment followed by oil.

Dec. 1881

Vincent works in Mauve's workshop. He produces watercolors of women from Scheveningen and receives direct corrections.

Spring 1882

Tensions grow. Vincent reports that Mauve refuses to see him and reproaches him for his character.

1884

Vincent is still considering reconciliation and asks to be able to study in Mauve's workshop.

1888

When his death was announced, Vincent painted a peach tree in flowers for Jet in Arles: Memory of Mauve.

Learning

What Mauve really teaches him

He does not pass on a "Van Gogh" recipe. He gives him the elementary instruments that were still missing: preparing a session, constructing values and carrying out an image to the end.

Cabbages and hooves: enter the oil

Van Gogh says that Mauve immediately installs him in front of a still life made up of old clogs and ordinary objects. This choice is revealing: before looking for a "style", you must adjust the proportions, volumes, background and light.

Still life with cabbages and hooves is generally considered his first preserved oil painting. It is still dark and compact, but the popular subject already announces Nuenen's peasants and objects.

1Observe the great masses.
2Prioritize light and dark.
3Painting the pattern, not the pattern idea.

Guided watercolor

A visible correction in the work

For this seated woman, Vincent works in Mauve's workshop. Years later, he still recognizes that this watercolor is one of his best of the period because Mauve added touches and advised him on several occasions.

The episode shows a very concrete pedagogy: Mauve does not just encourage. It intervenes on the sheet, shows where to reinforce a shadow, how to isolate the silhouette and how to let the paper breathe.

"Mauve encouraged me": in letters from 1881, Vincent describes him as an artist of great talent. Admiration therefore precedes the quarrel and survives it.
Same side, two temperaments

From Mauve to the Sea by Van Gogh

Scheveningen forms a joint laboratory. Mauve orders the figures there in a bound mist; Van Gogh, in 1882, already attacked the wind and waves with more colliding material.

Time becomes matter

Sand mixed with paint during the session. The waves, the sky and the figures are brushed with an urgency that Mauve's method would not have excluded, but that Vincent pushes towards expression.

This photochrome view from the end of the 19th century preserves the working beach that painters knew: large boats pulled on the sand, fishermen, horses and open horizon. It helps to understand why the Mauve shore is not a leisure setting.

Spring 1882

Why does the relationship break?

Vincent seeks Mauve's approval, but is less and less tolerant of what he perceives as imposed social and artistic rules. Mauve, for his part, gets tired of his behavior, his requests and his distrust of the advice received.

In letter 224 to Theo, Vincent reports that Mauve refuses to come see him and tells him that he has a "vicious character". He clearly links the feud to his life with Clasina Maria "Sien" Hoornik, a former pregnant prostitute, and to the judgment of those around him.

The breakup is neither a simple disagreement in style nor a single scene. It mixes personal conduct, family conventions, professional tensions and Vincent's refusal to abandon his own.
Historical precaution: no letter from Mauve to Van Gogh has been preserved. The detailed story reaches us mainly through Vincent, who writes on the spot and interprets the reactions of his former guide. We must therefore distinguish what he reports from what Mauve himself would have explained.

At the heart of the link

Jet Carbentus, more than a genealogical detail

Jet makes the meeting possible, but she also becomes the recipient of Vincent's last gesture towards Mauve. In 1888, when Vincent learned of the painter's death, he immediately thought of her and wanted to send her a work.

The portrait of Jet in the dunes also reminds us that Mauve worked with relatives and in contact with the real landscape. Woman, sand, wind and costume are not separate: they make up an atmosphere. This unity will remain a fundamental lesson for Van Gogh, even when his color becomes brighter.

After the breakup

What Van Gogh keeps from Mauve

The future sunflower painter does not permanently copy his elder's gray palette. Rather, he maintains a way of approaching the motif and considering painting as a physical work.

Respect for the modest motiveA clog, a cabbage, a knitting woman or a worker can carry all the ambition of a painting.
Unity before detailA work must hold together with its large masses, its values and its atmosphere before seducing with its small notations.
The presence of workMauve paints those who guard, pull, walk or repair. Van Gogh will extend this attention to bodies to work.
The outdoors without picturesquenessWind and humidity are not decorative effects: they modify the touch, color and rhythm of the session.
The need to start againWatercolor, drawing and oil are learning based on tests, corrections and repetition.
A transformed debtIn Arles, grays turn pink, yellow and blue. The method learned now serves a personal language.

Memory of Mauve: the master returns in bloom

Mauve died on February 5, 1888. Vincent did not learn the news until the end of March, when the orchards of Arles were flowering. He wrote to Théo that this death had deeply seized him and chose his most accomplished orchard study to pay homage to him.

"Memory of Mauve"

The work does not resemble a Mauve: the blue sky, the pink flowers and the light ground fully belong to Arles. This is precisely what makes the tribute strong. Vincent does not return to his master's gray; he offers him what he has become thanks, in part, to the first passage in front of the cabbages and hooves.

The painting is intended for Jet. She then thanks Vincent. Thus, six years after the quarrel, the relationship ended less with controversy than with a renaissance painting.

Compare

Two visions, one continuity

Pitting "Gray Mauve" against "Colorful Van Gogh" is only useful if we also see what connects them.

Point Anton Mauve Vincent van Gogh Continuity
Palette Grey, brown, muffled green, damp light. More frank contrasts, yellows, blues, pinks and active contours. Color serves as the unity of the pattern first.
Key Bound, flexible, often melted in the atmosphere. More and more visible, directional and thick. The touch reflects time, the ground and the gesture.
Topics Herds, farmers, beaches, roads. Peasants, weavers, sowers, orchards, cafes and portraits. A dignity given on a daily basis.
Method Tonal construction, controlled watercolor, workshop profession. Intensive rehearsal, drawing then oil, experimentation. Observe and start again until the whole thing holds.
Modernity Renews the Dutch landscape with real atmosphere. Transforms observation into autonomous emotional language. Modernity starts from reality rather than the noble subject.
