Nuda Veritas: the naked truth in front of the Viennese public

A life-size woman, a mirror held up to the viewer and a phrase from Schiller that refuses to please as many people as possible: Klimt transforms the allegory of Truth into a manifesto of Secession.

DIRECT RESPONSE

Why is this naked woman a manifesto?

Nuda Veritas don't try to seduce with a comfortable mythological scene. The figure stands, from the front, without protective drapery and without a story that would look away. It presents a mirror: it is therefore not only it that the public must examine, but its own capacity to receive a new work.

The painting was painted in 1899, in the early years of the Viennese Secession. Klimt responds to the resistance encountered by modern art with a program image: the artist's truth must be told even if it pleases only a few. The long panel resembles a monumental poster, a decorative element and a secular icon all at once.

The frontal realism of the body - down to the anatomical details then considered inappropriate - removes from the allegory its academic distance. Truth is neither an inaccessible goddess nor a passive beauty: it looks, shows, confronts.

To remember: the scandal is not just about nudity. It comes from the association between a body without idealization, a direct gaze, a mirror addressed to the public and a text which openly claims the independence of the artist.
READING FROM TOP TO BOTTOM

A painting constructed like a proclamation

The extremely vertical format requires sequential reading. Each area adds an injunction: read, look, look at yourself, then recognize the title.

01

The sentence

Schiller's text occupies the top as a public order word.

02

The face

The frontal gaze refuses the expected dreamy pose of decorative beauty.

03

The mirror

The record is turned towards us: the spectator becomes the real subject of the examination.

04

The body

Life-size, immobile and without clothing, he materializes the "naked" truth.

05

Flowers

Two flowers rise to the edge of the dark field and balance symmetry.

06

The title

Nuda Veritas is integrated into the image as a poster or monument inscription.

"If your action and your art cannot please all, please a few. Pleasing many is bad."

Friedrich Schiller · French translation of the text inscribed by Klimt

BEFORE THE TABLE

1898: The Truth appears in Sacrum Worm

A year before the painting, Klimt published a first Nuda Veritas in Sacrum Worm, the Secession review. The drawing already has the essential elements: the woman's forehead, the mirror, the black hair, the flowers and the title integrated into the image.

But the text is not yet Schiller's. Klimt quotes Leopold Schefer: "Truth is fire, and to tell the truth means to shine and burn." This sentence emphasizes the dangerous energy of true speech. In the 1899 painting, Schiller's quote shifts the issue to the artist who agrees not to please everyone.

From graphics to physical face-to-face

The sheet is 42.9 cm high. The canvas reaches 244 cm: the printed allegory becomes a life-size presence. The public no longer leafs through the Truth; he stands before her.

A MOTIVE IN CIRCULATION

Around the four "Naked Truths"

The Theatermuseum indicates that Klimt has developed four versions on the same theme. Three milestones are directly comparable below. For the fourth, the catalogs generally bring allegorical research closer to the period, but the numbering varies depending on the corpus.

Pallas Athena by Gustav Klimt, entire painting from 1898
1898 · PALLAS ATHENATruth in the hand of the goddess

The small naked figure held by Athena announces the motif. The painting connects the warlike authority of the protector of the arts to a modern, provocative and almost miniature truth.

DETAILA small figure already frontal

Isolated, she appears naked, standing and facing us. The power of 1899 comes from the enlargement of this sign to the spectator's scale.

Study of frontal female nude by Gustav Klimt around 1898 linked to Pallas Athena
AROUND 1898 · STUDYThe body before the emblem

The preparatory drawing reminds us that Klimt's symbolic silhouettes are born from observational work. The outline then simplifies to become a readable sign.

Method grade: the Theatermuseum does speak of four variants, but its public notice does not align them like a numbered series. It is therefore more rigorous to distinguish documented works than to invent a certain fourth step.

WHAT THE PUBLIC RECEIVED

Six tensions in one figure

The strength of Nuda Veritas comes from contradictions that it keeps open instead of resolving them.

01

Naked and truth

"Nude" means without veil, without flattery and without convention. The body is both subject and visual definition.

02

Realism and ornament

The frontal anatomy contrasts with spirals, flowers, flat black areas and decorative letters.

03

Watch and be watched

The mirror reverses the usual position: the public who comes to judge the work must also judge themselves.

04

Painting and poster

The text, title and narrow format make the painting an almost advertising visual proclamation.

05

Beauty and discomfort

Symmetry attracts, but stillness and anatomical frankness prevent innocent contemplation.

06

A few and the crowd

Schiller's quote rejects success as a measure of value and defends the minority who understand.

REPRODUCTION OF THE STORE

Respect extreme verticality

The complete reproduction preserves what makes the work unique: the very close relationship between the figure, the upper quotation, the dark background and the title block. A decorative cropping would make the functioning of the image disappear.

The original Theatermuseum and the reproduction of the store remain two distinct objects. The product sheet allows you to choose a suitable format while retaining the entire composition.

COMPLETE OR DETAIL?

Two formats, two readings

The complete composition favors the manifesto: text, figure, mirror and title form a whole.

The version in detail favors the presence of body and face, with less space reserved for registration.

For a faithful historical reading, choose the entire table. For a wider presence on a narrow wall, compare the proportions of the variation before ordering.

FAQs

Twelve answers out of Nuda Veritas

What does Nuda Veritas mean?

The Latin expression means "the naked truth". In Klimt, nudity indicates truth without veil, while the mirror asks the viewer to examine themselves.

When did Gustav Klimt paint Nuda Veritas?

The large oil on canvas dates from 1899. Klimt had already published a first graphic version of the motif in the magazine Sacrum Worm in March 1898.

Why was the painting shocking?

The female body is presented from the front, life-size, without reassuring mythological coverage and with unusual anatomical frankness. The mirror and the text also challenge the public who come to judge the artist.

What does the quote above the figure say?

Klimt writes a sentence from Schiller which can be translated as follows: if your action and your art cannot please all, please a few; pleasing many is bad.

Why does a woman hold a mirror?

The mirror is turned towards the audience. It transforms Truth into an instrument of examination: the viewer of the work must also reflect on his own tastes and prejudices.

Does the 1898 version have the same text?

No. The Wien Museum drawing quotes Leopold Schefer: "Truth is fire, and to tell the truth means to shine and burn." Schiller's text appears in the 1899 painting.

How many versions of Nuda Veritas are there?

The Theatermuseum evokes four variants on the same theme. Among the clearly documented milestones are the small figure of Pallas Athena, drawing for Sacrum Worm and the monumental canvas of 1899.

How tall is Nuda Veritas?

The canvas measures 244 × 56.5 cm according to the official instructions of the Theatermuseum. With its frame, the whole reaches 260 × 64.5 cm.

Who owned the painting?

Critic Hermann Bahr acquired it. After his death, the work remained with his widow, Anna Bahr-Mildenburg, before entering the Theatermuseum by bequest in 1954.

Where's original?

It belongs to the Theatermuseum Vienna, located at the Lobkowitz Palace, under inventory number BT_O_3656.

Can we see Nuda Veritas in 2026?

As of July 23, 2026, the Theatermuseum is temporarily closed for renovation. The museum announces a resumption in fall 2026; you must check the date and hanging on the official website before traveling.

What format should I choose for a reproduction?

The complete composition requires a very vertical format which preserves the quotation and title block. A detailed version enlarges the figure, but it no longer fully restores the manifesto designed by Klimt.

Truth does not require unanimity

In 1899, Klimt did not paint one more decorative nudity. He places before Vienna a figure who looks, a mirror which reflects judgment and a text which makes refusal to please a condition of freedom.
