The prestige of the represented artist is not the main explanation. It is the surface area, the complexity, the rendering requested, and the logistics that drive the work. Start with these four markers: they let you immediately set aside misleading comparisons.
Painting or print?
An entirely hand-painted oil involves drawing, mixing, layers, and rework. A print reproduces the image through a mechanical process.
What actual surface area?
Dimensions must be compared in width and height. Doubling in both directions quadruples the working surface.
What level of detail?
Faces, hands, architecture, foliage and precise ornaments demand more control than simple large masses.
What landed price?
Rolled or mounted canvas, frame, packaging, insurance, transport and taxes must be included or clearly separated.
In a Van Gogh work, the direction and continuity of the brushstrokes contribute to the subject: the paint itself cannot be treated as mere fill.

Control also has value. An intermediate or final photograph makes it possible to check framing, proportions, and color balance before shipping. It's important to know how many revisions are included, on what grounds they can be requested, and at what point the approval becomes final.Finally, compare what actually arrives at your door. A rolled canvas is easier to transport but must be mounted on a frame locally. A canvas on a stretcher is closer to the final hanging, though it requires greater protection. Above a sofa
Center the piece on the cabinet rather than on the entire wall. A consistent width and breathing space between chair back and canvas tie the two elements together.
A sweeping landscape
A horizontal composition can complement the table. Check how it looks seated, standing, and from the room's entrance.
Close-range detail
A medium format allows the brushwork to be observed without needing to step back. The fine detail must remain readable, but it does not justify an overly large canvas.
Access

Why does a large format cost noticeably more?
Because the surface area grows faster than a single dimension. When width and height double, it is multiplied by four. The requirements for canvas, preparation, paint, stretcher rigidity, handling, and protection all increase in step.
Is a very famous painting necessarily more expensive to reproduce?
