FAQ

Start by naming the object

Not all images on canvas are paintings

A hand-painted reproduction is a new painting executed from an existing work. The painter applies a colored medium onto a prepared support; the surface therefore bears layers, transitions, reworkings and tool marks. Two copies cannot be perfectly identical. This variation does not allow any deviation: composition, values, proportions and color relationships must remain consistent with the model.A canvas print is produced with inks. It can be sharp, stable and highly decorative, but its image is deposited mechanically. A so-called “embellished” or “retouched” canvas starts with a print to which gel, varnish or paint touches are added. Visible relief therefore does not automatically mean the whole has been painted.
This distinction matters because it changes the price, the production time, and the appearance up close. No technique is shameful; the problem only starts when the buyer pays for a full painting and receives a textured print. The first question to ask is simple: is the whole image painted, or is a print serving as the base?

The word “oil” alone is not enough.

Ask about the support, the preparation, the technique applied across the whole image, the shipping method, and the finish of the edges. A precise description is worth more than a string of prestigious terms.

01

Full painting

Real paint layer across the whole image, visible gestures, variations between copies, and a longer realization time.

02

Print on canvas

Regular inks and photographic precision; the texture comes mostly from the textile, not from brushstrokes.

03

Touched-up print

Printed base enhanced with gel or paint. A valid decorative compromise when clearly disclosed.

The essential information sheet before purchase Seven criteria that require a clear answer A reproduction of a master painting is both an image and a physical object. Its quality depends on the reference used, but also on what lies beneath and around the paint. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes traditional painting as a structure composed notably of an auxiliary support, a support, a ground, colored layers, and sometimes a varnish. Criterion

Museums · open data · colorimetry

The source image is the primary material of the reproduction.

The Met provides public-domain images and data under CC0; the object record remains the starting point for identifying a precise version.

Start from the museum's own record, not from a randomly found image

Search engines mix old photographs, reproductions, cropped versions, and files whose colors have been altered. A very bright image may look attractive while flattening the half-tones of the original. For a work held at the Met, the National Gallery of Art, or the Rijksmuseum, look first for the object's official page. The Met and the National Gallery of Art identify open-access images of public-domain works. The Rijksmuseum provides, for a large part of its collection, high-resolution files and reminds users of the value of using the most recent version. These resources make it possible to examine framing, details, and metadata; they do not remove the need to check the rights notice attached to each file.A digital photograph is never the work itself. Lighting, color profile, varnish, screen, and aging all influence appearance. The reasonable goal is therefore a documented, balanced reference, not the impossible promise of absolute chromatic correspondence in every light.official record

Canvas · preparation · color · finish

Material must serve the image, not create a spectacular relief

An oil painting on canvas works as a system of layers. The canvas and the stretcher provide stability; the ground layer sets adhesion and the starting tone; the color layers build values, contours, and texture. An optional varnish changes saturation and gloss, but it cannot fix a poorly drawn composition.

In Klimt's work, the repetition of brushstrokes and the density of the foliage create depth; a uniform impasto would destroy this organization.

Step back, then look under raking light

From two or three meters away, first check the large masses: the horizon, the position of the subject, the balance between light and shadow, and the direction of the diagonals. A figure slightly too large or a background slightly too pale alters the work far more than a small difference in texture. Then step closer and light the canvas from the side. Brushmarks should vary across zones. Van Gogh calls for directional strokes; Vermeer demands restrained transitions; Monet builds atmosphere through tonal relationships; Klimt alternates grid, pattern, and surface. Adding identical impasto everywhere amounts to imposing the same voice on four different artists. Finally, observe the brilliance. A very glossy varnish intensifies the colors but produces reflections; a matte finish reduces these reflections while potentially weakening the blacks. The finish must be announced and adapted to the room, especially if a window or spotlight reflects directly on the canvas.masses

Copying without standardizing

Useful fidelity changes with the painter

A convincing reproduction does not seek to artificially imitate the cracks and age of the painting. It translates what organizes the visual experience: drawing, values, color relationships, rhythm and density of material.

Monet

Atmosphere before detail

Preserve the colored greys, the vibration of the brushstrokes, and the measured contrast. Reinforcing the contours too much turns the light into a cut-out scene.

Van Gogh

The direction of the gesture

Brushstrokes guide the eye and follow the forms. A random relief imitates an appearance without recapturing the energy of the composition.

Vermeer

Values and silence

Modeling depends on fine transitions, a few luminous accents, and a controlled background. A copy that is too light loses its concentration.

Klimt

Motif, weave, and depth

Patterns are no mere filler: their scale and repetition structure the surface and the relationship between figure and setting.

Old Masters

Drawing and soft layers

Faces, hands and drapery require accurate drawing, stable tonal values, and transitions that avoid a harsh photographic effect.

Modern art

The edge matters as much as the color

Flat areas, reserves, and contours must remain crisp or vibrant depending on the artist. A small proportion error becomes immediately visible.

A simple, controllable timeline

From the chosen artwork to the hung canvas

A clear process reduces misunderstandings. Each step must produce verifiable information before moving on to the next.

01

Artwork

Validate the title, artist, version, and reference museum.

02

File

Choose a high-resolution, complete, and well-documented image.

03

Format

Preserve the aspect ratio and decide on the stretcher, edges, and frame.

04

Painting

Confirm technique, support, deadline, and level of finish.

05

Review

Examine the final photo: framing, tonal values, colors, surface.

06

ReceptionInspect the package, tension, corners, surface, and hanging system.

The announced timeline should include the preparatory drawing, the application of color, the successive layers, the necessary drying time, the quality check, and the packaging. It varies with size and complexity: multiple figures, hands, precise architecture, or many transitions require more work than a large flat field. A very fast promise is not necessarily misleading, but it must be consistent with the technique described. The price, on its part, should be explained by the surface area, the level of detail, the materials, the mounting, and the quality-control service — never by the sole prestige of the artist's name.

Compare two quotes.

Check whether they include the stretcher bars, the edge finishing, the frame, a photo before shipping, the packaging, and the transport. The lowest amount means nothing if the service is not the same.

Format · palette · light · viewing distance

Choose an artwork that remains pleasant in the room

A cool palette crossed with an orange accent can structure a bright room without weighing it down.

Measure the wall before choosing the size

Start with the artwork's ratio. A composition close to 4:3 can go from 60 × 45 cm to 100 × 75 cm without distortion. Ordering it at 100 × 70 cm forces you to crop, stretch the image, or add a margin. Ask explicitly which solution will be used. For wall scale, make a paper template. Above a piece of furniture, a width roughly between half and three-quarters of it is a starting point, not a rule. Take into account the frame, the viewing distance, and the other objects around. A large expressive canvas needs space around it; a vertical portrait calls above all for free height. The palette can extend a color already present or create a contrast. Avoid, however, choosing only because the blue matches the sofa: subject, rhythm and intensity must remain livable in everyday life. Light it with a soft, oblique light, without direct sun or a nearby heat source.preserved ratio

Eight precise answers

Frequently asked questions about master painting reproductions

How to recognize a truly hand-painted reproduction?

Ask whether the entire image is painted, with close-up views under oblique light and a photo of the finished piece. A retouched print has a printed base and must be presented as such.

Oil or acrylic painting: which to choose?

Both techniques can produce a solid work. Oil often offers long working time and smooth transitions; acrylic dries fast. The painter's mastery, preparation, and layer consistency matter more than the name of the binder alone.

Does heavy texture guarantee better quality?

No. The material must follow the logic of the work. A uniform gel or randomly placed impastos add spectacular texture without translating the master's gesture.

Can any format be ordered?

One may enlarge or reduce the image while preserving the width-to-height ratio. If the ratio changes, the image must be cropped, stretched, or extended with added margins. The solution must be decided before the painting is executed.

Why is the source image so important?

It determines the framing, tonal values, colors, and details available to the painter. A high-resolution institutional image is preferable to a compressed or heavily retouched screenshot.

What should be checked on the photo before shipping?

Check proportions, placement of masses, light and dark values, color balance, edge finish, and visible defects. Compare with the validated reference, not with a screen set differently.

How to inspect the canvas upon receipt?

Photograph the package if it is damaged, handle the work by the stretcher bars, check tension, flatness, corners, scratches, missing pieces, and the hanging system. Do not rub the surface.

Where to hang a painted reproduction?

On a stable wall, away from direct sunlight, a radiator, air conditioning, and humidity. Soft, oblique LED lighting reveals the texture without producing too much heat.
