Rembrandt exhibitions: agenda and major retrospectives
From Amsterdam to Tokyo, from Boston to Haarlem, here are the confirmed meetings to see Rembrandt differently: etchings, paintings, dialogues with Frans Hals and investigations into the workshop.
The answer at a glance
What Rembrandt exhibits to see now?
As of August 12, 2026, the strongest meetings are Rembrandt & Life in Amsterdam, the etching exhibitions in Brielle and Tokyo, The Book of Esther in the Age of Rembrandt in Boston, then Rembrandt 1632 in Gotha and Hals - Rembrandt in Haarlem.
Not every year there is a single "major Rembrandt retrospective" bringing together all the masterpieces. Loans are difficult, paintings fragile and drawings or prints sensitive to light. The agenda therefore consists of additional formats: monographic exhibition, thematic file, confrontation with a contemporary, presentation of works on paper or research carried out in front of the public eye.

Herzogliches Museum. After Kassel, the exhibition studies the year when Rembrandt established himself in Amsterdam, developed his public name and organized a production with his entourage.
Haarlem

Amsterdam
Lifetime exposure
Rembrandt & Life don't try to piece together a biography by dates. The exhibition starts from bodies and gestures: infant carried by his mother, young lovers, adults at work, old people whose skin and fatigue become separate subjects whole. This choice is particularly suitable for printmaking, a fast, mobile medium and attentive to ordinary scenes.
The route ends with a "treasure chamber". The preserved fragment of the Anatomy lesson from Doctor Jan Deijman, painted in 1656 and damaged in a fire, dialogue with Joseph telling his dreams, rare oil sketch on paper, and the print resulting from this research. The interest is therefore not only iconographic: the visitor sees how an idea passes from one medium to another.
For a first discovery, this exhibition is the most intimate on the agenda. It is held in the house where Rembrandt lived and worked for almost twenty years; architecture, the reconstructed workshop and engraving demonstrations provide a material context that a large general gallery does not offer.

Tokyo
Why Japanese exposure is essential
The National Museum of Western Art brings together funds from the House of Rembrandt and its own collection, enriched with Japanese and Dutch loans. The result goes beyond the alignment of "beautiful sheets": around 130 works and documents show how Rembrandt bites the plate, combines etching, drypoint and chisel, modifies its states and sometimes chooses Asian paper to transform the light.
The exhibition is organized in two movements. The first follows the technical and narrative challenges of the engraver; the second measures its impact on European artists, up to the 19th and 20th centuries. The Coin of a Hundred Florins, the Faust and theSelf-portrait drawing near a window allow us to compare three ambitions: telling a crowd, creating a luminous mystery and constructing the public image of the artist.
Rotations are announced during the opening period, a normal measure to protect papers from light. The exact list visible on the day of the visit may therefore differ from the general selection published by the museum.

Boston
Esther, between Bible, identity and material culture
The Gardner Museum exhibition does not present Rembrandt as an isolated genius. She studies the popularity of the Book of Esther in the United Provinces, where Jewish and Protestant communities could recognize the courageous queen as one figure of survival, religious freedom or collective identity.
The route combines Dutch paintings, tapestries, Persian textiles and ceremonial objects. This diversity avoids a purely stylistic reading: the oriental costumes, jewelry and imagined architecture are replaced in the commercial exchanges and cosmopolitanism of Amsterdam. The identification of certain figures remains cautious. THE painting from the National Gallery of Canada is thus presented as a Jewish heroine, "perhaps Esther"; the title should not be transformed into certainty.
The clean Self-portrait at 23 du Gardner serves as the anchor for an exhibition which is, according to the museum, its first major event dedicated to 17th-century Dutch art.

Kassel then Gotha
1632: when "Rembrandt" becomes a trademark
The year 1632 is an excellent observatory. Rembrandt comes from Leiden, works in Amsterdam in Hendrick Uylenburgh's environment and has access to a wider portrait clientele. This is also the period when the use of his first name alone as a signature asserts itself: a gesture of artistic identity, but also a tool of recognition on the market.
The exhibition does not reduce this success to a modern advertising strategy. She compares originals, variants, copies and workshop processes to understand how compositions and types of faces circulate. The version presented at Kassel from May 8 to August 9, 2026 is due to join the Herzogliches Museum in Gotha from September 5 to December 6, in a configuration announced as slightly different.
This file is particularly useful for understanding attribution issues. A resemblance to Rembrandt is not enough: supports, preparation, repentance, way of laying the lights and organization of the workshop must be studied together.
Haarlem
Hals -Rembrandt: compare the touch without confusing the painters
From November 6, 2026, the Frans Hals Museum will bring together eleven paintings by Hals and eight by Rembrandt. The principle is not to choose a winner, but to slow down the gaze thanks to precise connections.
Both artists share an exceptional talent for bringing a face to life, but their methods diverge. Hals often gives the impression of a quick, sure and discontinuous gesture. Rembrandt more readily constructs the presence by layers, covers and variations of material. Faces can be finished with finesse while clothes or backgrounds remain more open in both.

Among the loans announced are also The Trustees, The Girl in a frame, The Man Who Laughs and The Music Part. The museum imposes time slots, a sign that the intimate scenography favors observation rather than crowds.

What were the major Rembrandt retrospectives?
Rembrandt: The Late Works
National Gallery in London then Rijksmuseum. Around forty paintings, twenty drawings and thirty prints explored the last few years, material, intimacy and late self-portraits. London welcomed 264,488 visitors.
All the Rembrandts
For the 350th anniversary of the painter's death, the Rijksmuseum showed his 22 paintings, 60 drawings and more than 300 selected prints. The whole revealed the scale of a collection rarely visible simultaneously.
Rembrandt - Velazquez
Sixty Dutch and Spanish paintings were presented in pairs around realism, faith, richness and beauty, thanks to a partnership between Rijksmuseum and Prado.
These events have shaped the contemporary view of Rembrandt. Late Works strengthened attention to late freedom; All the Rembrandts replaced painting, drawing and engraving on the same plan; Rembrandt - Velazquez preferred comparison to monograph. These are documented curatorial choices, not an obligatory progression in art history.

- Gotha's presentation follows that of Kassel.
Interpretations to be qualified
- "Marque" is a reading grid from the 1632 exhibition, not a word from Rembrandt.
- Esther's figure is not certain in every painting historically associated with the subject.
- A free key alone does not allow you to assign a work.
- A retrospective never constitutes a definitive catalog.
Visiting method
How to watch a Rembrandt exhibition?
Read the cartel last
Start by describing the light, gestures and distance between figures. The cartel then checks your observations.
Change distance
From afar, observe the composition. Up close, look for impasto, scratches, plate sizes and paper reserves.
Compare a detail
Choose eyes, hands or a white collar and follow the same detail from work to work.
Locate the status
Distinguish between certain work, workshop, entourage, copy and discussed attribution. These words are not interchangeable.
To see masterpieces off-exhibition, the Rijksmuseum also maintains The Night Watch in the public system of Operation Night Watch. Since March 2026, the museum has also been on long-term loan The Vision of Zechariah in the Temple, painting from 1633 reallocated to Rembrandt after technical study. These presentations are not temporary exhibitions in the strict sense, but they can justify a trip to Amsterdam.
