The Franciscan and mathematician Luca Pacioli arrived in Milan in 1496. The Museo Galileo described him as Leonardo's friend and master in mathematics and geometry. In particular, he helped him understand Euclid from a translation into the vernacular.

Pacioli completed his treatise in 1498; the printed edition appeared in Venice in 1509. Leonardo provided the famous views of polyhedra, represented solid or in the form of openwork structures.

Vitruvian Man is not proof of volours

The drawing illustrates the canon of human proportions described by the Roman architect Vitruvius. The body is part of a square and a circle, two perfect shapes to which correspond two positions of the arms and legs.

Its subject is indeed proportion. But "proportion" does not automatically mean "golden number". The ratios given in the text - shoulder width, foot length, distance from chin to top of head - form a system of body fractions.

The center of the circle and that of the square do not coincide: Leonardo adjusts the geometry to the observed body. This is precisely what makes the drawing more subtle than a simple mystical grid.

Why the myth persists

A simple formula to explain genius

The Golden Ratio offers an alluring tale: a secret constant alone would explain the harmony of masterpieces. This story is easy to visualize, teach and share.

However, he confuses three things: Leonardo's real interest in geometry, his collaboration with Pacioli and the intentional use of Franco in a specific painting.

Leonardo's genius resists unique recipes. Perspective, anatomy, optics, gestures, light, support and slowness of execution interact. Reducing this complexity to 1.618 decreases rather than explains.
