Where to see Gustav Klimt at Vienna?
Belvedere, Secession, MAK and Leopold Museum do not tell the same story Klimt. Here is the order of visit that connects the gold of the Kiss, the power of the Beethoven frieze, Stoclet boxes and large landscapes.

If you only have time for a museum
Choose it Upper belvedere :that's where they are The Kiss and the most instantly recognizable core of Klimt's work. If you have half a day, add it Secession. For a whole day, the MAK and the Leopold Museum complete the route by showing the decorator, designer and landscaper.
A Klimt day without retracing his steps
Upper belvedere
Reserve the first slot. Allow 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours for Klimt and the Vienna 1900 theaters.
Secession
A concentrated visit of 45 to 60 minutes is enough for the building and the three walls of the frieze.
MAK
After lunch, spend 1 hour 15 minutes on "Vienna 1900" and the nine Stoclet boxes.

Upper belvedere
The Belvedere has the most famous Klimt collection in the world. The museum bought The Kiss during the artist's lifetime, which explains the almost inseparable relationship between the painting, the palace and the history of Austrian art. The permanent presentation places Klimt among Schiele, Rodin, Monet, Van Gogh and the other actors of Viennese modernity.
However, do not reduce the visit to a photograph in front The Kiss. Female portraits, square landscapes, gardens and late works show how Klimt moves from elegant naturalism to an increasingly self-contained surface.
The Kiss, 1908 -1909
The couple forms an almost square mass where the male body, the circles of women's clothing, the flowered meadow and the gold background balance each other. Step back to read the silhouette, then move closer to distinguish the metal leaves and patterns.
Judith I, 1901
The golden frame, rigid necklace and face cutout transform the biblical heroine into a sensual apparition. The work also allows us to observe the role of the frame, thought of as an active extension of painting.
The Sunflower, Country garden with sunflowers, Driveway in Kammer Castle Park, portraits of Fritza Riedler and Sonja Knips, as well as unfinished works Adam and Eve, Amalie Zuckerkandl and Johanna Staude. Loans may occasionally change the hanging: consult the collection online before departure.
Secession Palace
The Secession is not a classic Klimt museum. It is a manifesto building designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897 -1898, recognizable by its dome of golden leaves and the motto "In every era its art, in art its freedom". The place continues to host contemporary exhibitions, while the Beethoven frieze is presented in a dedicated room in the basement.
Klimt produced this cycle in 1902 for the XIV Secession Exhibition, dedicated to Beethoven. The visitor follows a quest for happiness: suffering humanity calls a knight, crosses hostile forces and achieves appeasement in poetry, the arts and the final embrace.

Start at the left wall, don't immediately jump to the final embrace. Then step back into the center of the room to understand how empty spaces, floaters and ornamental areas circulate the gaze. Musical accompaniment to the Ninth Symphony is accessible on site by QR code.

MAK - Museum of Applied Arts
MAK is essential to understanding that Klimt did not only work as an easel painter. Its new permanent presentation "Vienna 1900 -Everyday. A Total Work of Art", opened in February 2026, connects painting, furniture, architecture, textiles, metal and Wiener Werkstätte.
Its strong point is an exceptional ensemble: the nine execution boxes prepared for the mosaic in the dining room of the Stoclet Palace. We see the handwritten indications, corrections and the use of gold, silver and platinum sheets. These are monumental works of work, not simple reproductions.
Leopold Museum
The Leopold Museum is often presented as Egon Schiele's great museum, but his Klimt journey is essential. The permanent presentation "Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism" displays around a thousand objects and combines painting, drawing, photography, furniture and decorative arts. Klimt appears there not as an isolated figure, but as the center of a cultural ecosystem.
On level 4, Life and Death constitutes the anchor point. Landscapes, including Attersee and The Great Poplar II, show another modernity: high horizon, compressed depth and almost abstract surface.

Life and Death, 1910 -1915
On the left, isolated death observes a mass of bodies which brings together childhood, love, motherhood and old age. Klimt profoundly reworked the picture: the initial golden background gave way to gray, increasing the tension between the two blocks.
Attersee, 1900
Almost the entire canvas is occupied by water. The tiny boat and the distant shore are enough to prevent the image from falling into total abstraction. This is one of the best works to understand Klimt's choice of square format.
Until October 4, 2026, two landscapes loaned by the Stiftung Sammlung Kamm - Italian garden landscape (1913) and Garden landscape with hill (1916) - enrich the large Klimt room. This temporary addition makes the Leopold particularly interesting for landscape lovers.

Tickets and timetables
- Reserve a slot at the Belvédère, especially on weekends and in high season.
- Tuesday is a good day: the MAK closes later, which relaxes the route.
- Clashes may change due to loans. Check the official pages the same morning.
- The Secession is closed on Mondays; the MAK too, except public holidays according to its calendar.

Klimt in Vienna, in practice
Where is Klimt's Kiss in Vienna?
The Kiss is preserved and presented at the Upper Belvedere, Prinz-Eugen-Strasse 27. It is not in the Leopold Museum or the MAK.
Is the Beethoven Friesland visible all year round?
It is in permanent presentation at the Secession. During the assembly phases of contemporary exhibitions, it may even happen that only the frieze is accessible. However, check the day's information on the official website.
Can we see the original Stoclet Frieze at MAK?
No. The Stoclet Palace and its original mosaics are in Brussels and do not constitute a public museum. The MAK preserves Klimt's nine execution cards, today integrated into the permanent presentation "Vienna 1900 - Everyday".
Which museum has Life and Death?
The painting belongs to the Leopold Museum, where it is exhibited on the level dedicated to Klimt in "Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism".
Can we do all four places in one day?
Yes, as long as you book the Belvedere early and limit each visit to the essential sections. For a more contemplative visit, spread Belvedere and Secession over one day, MAK and Leopold over a second.
Where to see the most Klimt landscapes in Vienna?
The Belvedere and the Leopold Museum are complementary. The Belvedere has several gardens and views of Lake Attersee; the Leopold presents in particular Attersee and The Great Poplar II, with two additional loans visible until October 2026.
