A balance without dominant direction

Why does the square change the way we look?

The square resists the habits of the gaze. A horizontal rectangle spontaneously calls the landscape; a vertical rectangle evokes the standing body. When height and width become almost equal, no direction is required in advance. The center gains gravity, the four sides exert comparable pressure and the slightest diagonal becomes very visible. The composition must construct its own movement instead of borrowing it from the format.

The exact square remains relatively rare before modernity, because panels, altarpieces and portraits obey other uses. Klimt, however, makes it a major instrument: his gardens, "The Kiss" and the portrait of Adèle Bloch-Bauer confuse depth and decorative surface. Monet brings water, plants and reflections together to the point of erasing the horizon. Malevich, Mondrian and Kandinsky then take a decisive step: the square no longer frames a represented world, it itself becomes a pictorial problem.

The corpus now applies a tight rule: the height/width ratio of each complete image remains between 0.90 and 1.10, for an average of 1.00. Works with only a square vignette were removed after visual inspection. All are oil paintings; drawings, inks, pastels, watercolors, prints, photographs and detailed cropping are excluded.

In a square, the eye does not know in advance whether it should go up, cross or turn: the painting must invent its own direction.

They introduce direction and speed into a field which, without them, could appear too stable or symmetrical.

Five ways to activate the square

A perfectly symmetrical square can become inert if the painter places everything in the center. The strongest compositions therefore establish controlled imbalances: a slightly offset figure, a diagonal, a denser group in an angle or a color that attracts one side. The unity of the format remains perceptible, but the gaze circulates instead of stopping.

What's a square table in this ranking?

A painting whose controlled height/width ratio is between 0.90 and 1.10. This narrow margin keeps historical formats slightly irregular while excluding rectangles.

Why not just remember the exact 1:1 ratio?

The mathematical square becomes especially common with modernity. A tolerance limited to ten percent avoids excluding old supports very close to the square.

Why is Klimt so present?
