Still life in the Bible
Family faith, Zola and the birth of a pictorial voice: a large open book, an extinguished candle and a small yellow novel are enough to depict heritage, mourning and modernity.
Two books, two generations
La Still life in the Bible is painted a few months after the death of Theodorus van Gogh, Vincent's father and Protestant pastor. The family Bible occupies almost all the space. In front of it, the small yellow volume of The joy of living by Émile Zola introduces modern, concrete and often painful literature that the painter read with passion.
Four objects, no unnecessary anecdotes
Van Gogh constructs a frontal and dense composition. Everything is recognizable, but its weight, color and position also produce meaning.
The Open Bible
Massive, clear and almost vertical, it dominates the whole. The pages are open to the book of Isaiah, chapter 53, associated with the figure of the suffering servant.
The yellow novel
The joy of living, published in 1884, appears small but very visible. Its lemon yellow acts as a modern note in the foreground.
The extinguished candle
It can evoke the mourning and disappearance of the father. However, it should be read as a symbolic possibility, not as unique biographical proof.
The black background
Black is not a void: it moves the pages forward, thickens the shadows and gives the canvas the gravity of an ancient Dutch master.
The father's Bible, the son's mourning
Theodorus van Gogh died on March 26, 1885. When Vincent painted still life in October, the family Bible became at the same time a real object, a memory and the sign of a religious world with which he maintained a conflicting relationship.

Theodorus van Gogh
Pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church, Vincent's father embodies a strict religious practice. The disagreements with his son were real, without erasing the attachment or the spiritual heritage.

Father's Church
Van Gogh first painted the church for his injured mother. After the death of his father, he took the canvas and added the faithful in black: the family building also entered the time of remembrance.

Why The joy of living ?
The title seems bright, but Zola's novel is crossed by illness, pessimism and suffering. Pauline, its heroine, nevertheless responds to misfortune with generous energy. For Van Gogh, naturalist literature was not a distraction: it spoke of modern life as it is lived.
The small volume therefore does not "crush" the Bible. He puts it in tension. On the one hand, a monumental text transmitted by the father; on the other, a recent book, read and handled by the son.
Break with religion or transformed faith?
Van Gogh had given up his institutional religious career and clashed with his father. However, it would be reductive to read the canvas as Zola's clear victory over the Bible. His work will remain nourished by compassion, the work of the humble, the sower, consolation and the figure of the suffering man.
Isaiah chapter 53, visible in the Open Bible, reinforces this ambiguity: it speaks of a rejected and tested servant. This page can echo mourning, Vincent's ancient vocation or his own identification with the excluded, without a single explanation being able to be proven.

Show that black can live
In his letter to Théo in October 1885, Vincent precisely describes an off-white Bible on a black background, a yellow-brown foreground and a note of lemon yellow. He responds to a discussion of the use of black and claims a color constructed by relationships rather than literally copied.
He claims to have painted the canvas "in one go, in one day". This speed does not mean improvisation: it summarizes months of studies of still lifes, dark values and impasto.
1885: Nuenen's voice tightens
The Bible is no isolated exception. It belongs to a year when Van Gogh sought a serious, tactile and instantly recognizable painting.
From the collective figure...
Potato Eaters condenses his ambition as a painter of peasant life: gestures, faces, food and light become a single dark material.
...to the object as a complete exercise
Apples, baskets, vegetables and books allow him to study the volumes, broken tones and thickness of the dough without depending on a model.

The books remain, the palette changes
In Paris in 1887, Van Gogh still painted French novels. But the covers become a range of reds, yellows, blues and greens. The book is no longer just a symbol opposed to another: it becomes a colored surface, an object of contemporary life.
Comparing the two paintings shows the birth of a pictorial voice. In 1885, deep colors carried the weight of heritage. Two years later, the same readings contributed to a clear, rapid and modern painting.

To remember
Why did Van Gogh paint a Bible?
He uses the Bible that belonged to his father, who died a few months earlier. The object combines family memory, Protestant faith and reflection on one's own artistic direction.
Which book by Zola appears in the painting?
The joy of living, novel published in 1884. The Van Gogh Museum presents it as a sort of "bible" of modern life for the painter.
Is the Bible open to Isaiah 53?
Yes, the visible inscription refers to Isaiah chapter 53, dedicated to the suffering servant. Its exact meaning in the table remains interpretable.
Does the extinguished candle represent the death of the father?
This is a plausible and frequent read, but Van Gogh does not explain it explicitly in the letter in which he describes the work. It is better to speak of a possible evocation of mourning.
How long did it take Van Gogh to paint the picture?
In letter 537 to Theo, he claims to have painted it in one go, in one day.
