What is this image about?
The Accomplishment . Erfüllung in German - is the entwined couple placed at the end of one of the large walls of the Stoclet frieze. The Embrace describes his gesture; The Accomplishment explains its symbolic function, in response to the solitary figure of The Waiting located on the opposite wall.
It should not be confused cardboard painted by Klimt, kept at MAK in Vienna, with the mosaic executed by the workshops for the Stoclet Palace in Brussels. The first is a monumental work design; the second belongs to the private architecture for which it was designed.

Nine boxes for three walls
The Stoclet Palace is designed in Brussels by Josef Hoffmann for the banker and collector Adolphe Stoclet. Architecture, furniture, tableware, garden and wall decor must form one Gesamtkunstwerk, a "total work of art". Klimt receives the dining room decor. Its nine 1:1 scale boxes serve as a guide for Wiener Werkstätte artisans and mosaic specialists.
The Waiting
An isolated figure, in profile, closes one side of the Tree of Life. His suspended gesture keeps desire at bay.
The Tree of Life
Its spiral branches connect the surfaces. It is not a simple background: it organizes the movement of the entire room.
The Accomplishment
Two bodies together conclude the cycle. Distance becomes contact, but clothing continues to distinguish partners.
The correct reading: "wait" on one side, "accomplish" on the other, while the Tree of Life transforms this opposition into decorative continuity.

A spatial opposition
The relationship is not just narrative. The two motifs are on opposite walls. A guest could therefore perceive the expectation and the union by turning his gaze in the room.
A continuous rhythm
Spirals, eyes, flowers and rectangles pass from one area to another. Klimt makes the figures distinct, but refuses to isolate them from the ornamental field.

How does the couple fit together?
The male back
The man turns his back on us. His body forms a vertical and protective mass; his face is almost just a profile placed against that of the woman.
The female face
The woman closes her eyes and tilts her head. This detail introduces a calm interiority in the midst of decorative profusion.
Hands
They explain the action better than hidden bodies: an arm wraps, a hand rests, the fingers hold the embrace without making it brutal.
Red and green
The red clothing of the man and the green floral dress of the woman further differentiate the two figures at the very moment when they unite.
Rectangles and flowers
Geometric blocks structure the male coat; plant motifs soften the female silhouette. This contrast guides reading without reducing the sexes to an absolute code.
The common silhouette
From a distance, the two garments make up a single shape. Up close, the details restore the difference: Klimt makes fusion and autonomy coexist.
Title and interpretation
Accomplishment, Embrace or Lovers?
Erfüllung means "accomplishment", "achievement" or "result". This title emphasizes the role of the motive in the whole: the expectation finds an answer. Umarmung"embrace" describes the gesture more directly. "The Lovers" refers to the characters.
These titles are therefore not contradictory. They simply change scale: the gesture, the figures or the symbolic function. To understand the frieze, "Accomplishment" is the most precise; to recognize the image, "The Embrace" is often the most immediate.

Is it Klimt with Emilie Flöge?
The hypothesis is attractive: the couple would be Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge, his closest companion. MAK presents it as a possibility, in particular because Klimt wrote to Flöge after seeing the mosaic completed in Brussels in 1914 and spoke of the sorrows, joys and worries linked to the drawings made on the banks of the Attersee.
But the motif is not a documented portrait in the strict sense. Faces are simplified, bodies integrated into an allegory, and couple studies go far beyond biographical identification.
Prudent conclusion
We can read a personal resonance between Klimt and Flöge, without transforming this hypothesis into certainty. The work functions first and foremost as the universal image of an expected rapprochement.

The boxes are not simple sketches. Their scale, annotations and corrections serve to convey the composition to the artisans. The final mosaic combines several materials and several know-how. This circulation between artist's drawing and collective execution is at the heart of the Wiener Werkstätte.
Essential point: an isolated reproduction can restore the couple's motif; the original is inseparable from architecture, lighting and decor designed together.

Which brings them together
