
Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance
Movement, humanism and innovations: understanding how a painter trained in a Florentine workshop transformed the observation of the body, nature and machines into a method of knowledge.

A Renaissance man, but not a single man
The Italian Renaissance is not just a decorative return to antiquity. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, artists studied ancient texts, measured space, observed the body and sought forms capable of making the world visible. Princely courts, urban republics, religious brotherhoods and merchants financed works where prestige, devotion and experimentation met.
Leonardo fully belongs to this environment. He learns in one bottega, works for patrons, dialogues with mathematicians and depends on commissions. Its singularity is less due to a mysterious omniscience than to its way of linking problems: perspective to optics, painted movement to mechanics, rivers to blood vessels, anatomy to drawing.
A career shaped by cities and courtyards
The Renaissance is a network of competing places. Each trip offers Leonardo new sponsors, materials and problems.
The workshop
In Verrocchio's entourage, painting, sculpture, metal, party decorations and engineering are not yet hermetic disciplines.
The court
In the service of the Sforza, Leonardo combines portraits, shows, architecture, military projects and The Last Supper.
The investigation
Florence, Rome and the campaigns of Caesar Borgia nourish cartography, hydraulics, anatomy and monumental compositions.
The transmission
Invited by François I, he took paintings and continued his research near Amboise until 1519.
Three movements of the gaze
Humanism does not mean that everything becomes profane. It encourages active reading of authors, attention to the sensitive world and new confidence in the abilities of the human mind.

Measuring human being
Vitruvian Man confronts an ancient text with observed proportions. The body becomes at the same time subject, measuring instrument and geometric problem.

The dissections and sectional drawings correct the ancient authorities. Leonardo organizes anatomy like an architect: plans, profiles, layers and combined views.

Innovation is first and foremost collective
Verrocchio's workshop brings together apprentices, companions and masters around complex commands. We prepare the supports, grind the pigments, copy the models, study the drapes, base the metal and build temporary decorations.
The Baptism of Christ reminds us that modern attribution must deal with this shared work. Leonardo therefore does not emerge out of context: he perfects an extraordinarily versatile workshop culture.
Six domains, the same method
Many of Leonardo's projects remain on paper. Their importance lies in the precision of the questions asked, not in the legend of modern objects already invented in the 15th century.
Painting
The sfumato attenuates the contours in order to restore the atmosphere, the depth and the almost imperceptible passage between light and shadow.
Optics
It analyzes rays, shadows, reflections and perception. Perspective also becomes a science of what the eye can actually distinguish.
Anatomy
His layered and sectional views provide an exceptionally clear graphic language, even if his results are not published during his lifetime.
Mechanics
Gears, bearings, forces and friction are isolated into elements. Machines are used to study the laws of motion.
Hydraulics
Swirls, channels and erosion connect local observation and reflection on the slow transformation of the Earth.
Cartography
Measurements, orientations and visual conventions produce maps useful for war, urban work and knowledge of the territory.

Why is Leonardo da Vinci representative of the Renaissance?
Because it connects the study of antiquity, direct observation, mathematics, arts and techniques. His career also depends on the workshops, courses and patronage characteristic of resurgent Italy.
Was Leonardo a humanist?
Yes, in the broad sense of a trust in human abilities and an active dialogue with ancient texts. However, he is not a classic academic humanist: his method favors experience, drawing and vernacular.
What are his main innovations in painting?

Did he really invent the helicopter and the parachute?
He designed devices often compared to modern machines, but these projects must be placed in the knowledge and materials of his time. Considering them as fully operational devices would be anachronistic.

They show the reasoning in progress: notes, corrections, comparisons and drawings circulate ideas between anatomy, mechanics, water, architecture and painting.
Has his scientific research been published?
