Judith at Holofernes banquet

An enlightened heroine, a background turned black and a title reconstructed by the investigation.

Long called Artemisia or Sophonisbe, the Prado painting reads today as a rare moment in Judith's story: her arrival at the enemy general's banquet.

The short answer

Why did this painting change its name?

The painting brings together the signs of a story scene, but its narrative is not immediately visible. A richly dressed woman receives a cup; a servant emerges from the shadows; a book is opened on the table. For a long time, these elements led to recognition of Artemisia drinking the ashes of Mausole, then Sophonisbe receiving the poison.

The Prado's technical study made the background more intelligible. The x-ray and examination of the layers show a hanging, an elderly servant and a drawstring bag, elements compatible with Judith welcomed in Holofernes' tent. There new identification is therefore not based on a simple change of taste: it links biblical text, gestures and material structure.

The canvas, however, remains an open image. Rembrandt chooses the front of violence, not decapitation. Judith appears attentive, calm and interior, as if destiny had already been decided.

I · The biblical subject

Judith before Holofernes' murder

In the Book of Judith, the city of Bethulia is threatened by the Assyrian army. Judith, a pious widow, enters the enemy camp and gains the trust of General Holofernes. The banquet prepares the moment when, drunk and asleep, he will be beheaded.

Western painting often shows the sword blow or the head blown away. Rembrandt prefers a narrative threshold: Judith is served, observed and invited. Nothing is bloody, but each object seems full of future.

The cup is not only a luxurious accessory. It explains the ancient confusion with Sophonisbe and also signals the banquet which will lead Holofernes to lose his vigilance. The book can evoke the Bible and, more broadly, divine design.

To watch: Judith doesn't stare at the viewer. His sideways gaze and open hand give the impression of a response to an off-camera presence.

II · Three old readings

Judith, Artemisia or Sophonisbe?

Current reading

Judith

The tent setting, the servant and the bag match the heroine's arrival in Holofernes' camp.

Old title

Artemisia

The cup was understood as the container containing the ashes of Mausole, drunk by his widow as a sign of fidelity.

Another hypothesis

Sophonisbe

The vase could also contain the poison received by the Carthaginian queen to avoid Roman captivity.

Artemisia : the cup and the dignity of the widow explain the old title of Rembrandt's painting, but not all the characters in its background.Click to enlarge
Sophonisbe receiving the cup of poison
Sophonisbe : in this tradition, the container announces voluntary death. The comparison reveals to what extent the cut alone is an ambiguous clue.Click to enlarge

The change of title recalls an essential rule in the history of art: an iconography is constructed by a bundle of clues. The object, gesture, secondary figures, written sources and material data must converge. Here, the Prado exams made visible elements that the blackening had almost erased.

III · Technical study and restoration

What the black background hid

Support

Two preparations

An underlying red layer is covered with a gray preparation. The main figures and the table are painted above.

Background

Two campaigns

The original background is masked by two layers without intermediate varnish: copper pigments, azurite and black, then enamel blue.

Alteration

Blackened blues

The copper pigments and enamel blue have chemically degraded. The servant thus seems to emerge from a ghostly darkness.

Intervention

A late black

The current uniform black background appears to have been added in the late 19th or early 20th century.

The x-ray shows a richer composition behind Judith: hangings, modeled passages and an elderly figure holding a half-open bag with cord and glans. An ancient photograph confirms that a damask curtain once occupied the interval between the young servant and the elderly woman.

The change in composition, however, dates from the 17th century, because the copper pigments used to cover the first background were no longer used in the same way in the following century. The current state therefore superimposes several times: rembrandt's invention, ancient modification, chemical aging and modern restoration.

Caution: reviews do not allow each underlying figure to be automatically assigned to Rembrandt. They establish the materiality of the changes, then the historical interpretation evaluates their meaning.

IV · Deferred violence

Artemisia Gentileschi tightens the action: Judith and Abra act together, the weight of the arms and tissues gives the scene exceptional physical strength.Click to enlarge

In Rembrandt, Holofernes is not even visible. This absence does not reduce tension; it moves it towards Judith's intelligence. The scene tells of the preparation, the calculation and the time suspended before the act.

The splendor of the costume also brings the painting closer to the heroines painted by Rembrandt between 1633 and 1635, in a dialogue with Rubens and Flemish painting. White fabrics, embroidery, jewelry and metal become a demonstration of painting as much as a moral characterization.

V · Light, fabric and metal

A heroine constructed by reflections

The light comes from the left and first hits the white dress. This surface becomes a reflector which then illuminates the profile of the young servant, the edge of the cup and the book. Rembrandt therefore organizes a circulation: invisible source, fabric, skin, metal, paper.

The face remains softer than the clothing. This contrast avoids brutal heroization. Judith does not shine like a statue; she seems to think in the middle of a sumptuous device. White carries the action, while the face keeps the secret.

From a distance, first observe the imbalance between the luminous figure and the vast darkness. Then approach to distinguish the profile of the servant, the cut, the book and the different textures of the dress. The background should not not to be read as a simple void: it is the visible result of a complex material history.

Frequently asked questions

Identify and look at the table

When did Rembrandt paint Judith at the Holofernes banquet?

In 1634, during a period when Rembrandt painted several heroines of Antiquity and the Old Testament in sumptuous Baroque language.

Where is the painting located?

At the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, room 076 according to the official notice consulted in August 2026.

What are its dimensions?

The oil on canvas measures 143 × 154.7 cm. It bears inventory number P02132.

Why was the painting called Artemisia?

Woman, cup and pomp were associated with Artemisia drinking the ashes of Mausole. This reading, however, did not account for all the elements revealed by the technical study.

Was he also called Sophonisbe?

Yes. The cup could evoke Sophonisbe receiving poison. This ancient proposition shows how a female figure with a container could support several stories.

Why is the Prado holding Judith?

The x-ray shows a tent setting and a servant with a bag, elements consistent with Judith's arrival in Holofernes' camp and the banquet described in the biblical text.

Did Saskia serve as a role model?

A resemblance to Saskia van Uylenburgh is often noted, but recognizing a model is not enough to transform the figure into a certain portrait.

What does the restoration reveal?

The study of layers and pigments reveals transformations of the background, an elderly servant, a bag and curtains that are now very darkened. The uniform black background currently visible is late.

Is the signature authentic?

The Prado notice considers it doubtful by its layout and its yellow color. The date and style nevertheless remain consistent with Rembrandt, and the attribution is supported by the technical study.

Is there a reproduction in the store?

Yes, the product Judith at the Holofernes Banquet - Rembrandt is directly linked from the article.
