Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper in Milan

The quick choice

Which program to watch first?

Not all films dedicated to Leonardo pursue the same objective. Some examine notebooks and works with specialists; others use the gray areas of his life to construct a plot. Here is the most useful shortcut.

The most complete

Leonardo da Vinci, Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon, 2024.

Closest to the works

Leonardo: The Works, Phil Grabsky, 2019.

The best classic biography

The Life of Leonardo da Vinci, Renato Castellani, 1971.

The most accessible fiction

Leonardo, series of 2021 - to watch knowing your freedoms.

Essential documentaries

The four best entry points

Anatomical study of skull by Leonardo da Vinci
N° 1 · DOCUMENTARY

Leonardo da Vinci - Ken Burns, 2024

Two games · about four hours

Created with Sarah Burns and David McMahon, this fresco links biography, painting, science, anatomy and contemporary heritage. The long term allows us to avoid the simple succession of "brilliant inventions".

For whom? The viewer who wants a broad and current introduction.

The Virgin, Child Jesus and Saint Anne of Leonardo
N° 2 · ART IN CINEMA

Leonardo: The Works - 2019

Director: Phil Grabsky

Product in the collection Exhibition on Screen, the film favors paintings, drawings and details visible in very high definition. It is particularly suitable for those who already know the major dates.

For whom? Lovers of painting and museums.

Studies of the movement of water by Leonardo da Vinci
N° 3 · DOCUFICTION

Inside the Mind of Leonardo - 2013

With Peter Capaldi

The film is based on the notebooks and features a voice reconstructed from Leonardo's writings. The theatrical form makes his thinking sensitive, but it should not be taken as a direct recording of his personality.

For whom? Those who want to get into the notes and obsessions of the master.

Horse study by Leonardo da Vinci
N° 4 · BIOGRAPHICAL SERIES

The Life of Leonardo da Vinci - 1971

Renato Castellani · Philippe Leroy

This five-episode European co-production patiently reconstructs workshops, trips and commissions. Its rhythm is old, but its attention to sources and places retains great value.

For whom? Enthusiasts ready to accept slower staging.

Leonardo da Vinci's Lady and the Ermine

The best current choice

Why start with Ken Burns?

The documentary, broadcast for the first time on PBS on November 18 and 19, 2024, is divided into two parts and four hours. This is Ken Burns' first production devoted to a non-American subject.

Its main merit is to refuse to separate the artist from the researcher. The movements of water, anatomy, light and painting appear as different expressions of the same curiosity.

Its limit is that of any great synthesis: specialists may wish for more debates on the attributions or the material chronology of the works. For a first vision, the balance remains remarkable.

Fictions and series

When Leonardo becomes a character

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo - 2021

Aidan Turner plays a vulnerable Leonard in a very visually polished series. The criminal investigation and several relationships are invented or significantly reshaped.

To see for: atmosphere and workshops. Not for: learn an exact biography.

Historical fantasy

Da Vinci's Demons - 2013 -2015

A fantastic adventure that transforms young Leonardo into an action hero. Machines, conspiracies and secret enemies belong above all to the contemporary imagination.

To see like: assumed historical fantasy.

Saint John the Baptist by Leonardo da Vinci

Ever After - 1998

In this variation of Cinderella, Leonardo acts as an artist, inventor and benevolent advisor to the French court. The character is endearing, but the story is a tale.

To see with the family: for fantasy, not for chronology.

Not to be confused

"Vinci" films which mainly talk about something else

Thriller

Da Vinci Code - 2006

Ron Howard's film uses The Last Supper and there Mona Lisa as supports for enigmas. His theories constitute neither a biography of Leonardo nor a reliable introduction to art history.

Action comedy

Hudson Hawk - 1991

The story imagines an alchemical machine attributed to Leonardo. He plays with the cliché of the inventor with unlimited secrets, without documentary intention.

Caution

Sensational documentaries

Beware of programs built around "code finally revealed", miraculous attribution, or modern invention supposedly anticipated in every detail.

Method

How to judge a documentary about Leonardo?

1. Look at the sources

A good program distinguishes between autograph notebooks, contemporary archives, later stories by Vasari and modern interpretations.

2. Check attributions

Leonardo's painted corpus is restricted and discussed. A serious documentary signals the debates instead of transforming each proposed work into certainty.

3. Avoid the modern prophet

His machines are fascinating, but a conceptual drawing does not always equate to a constructed and functional device.

Availability: broadcast catalogs change depending on country and date. Check the official pages of PBS, Arte, public channels or distributors rather than a list of old platforms.
