MUSEUMS GUIDE · NEW YORK · 2026

Where to see Van Gogh in New York?

From the night blue of MoMA to the cypresses, flowers and portraits of the Met, New York allows you to explore almost the entire career of Van Gogh in two museums - with a useful detour via the Guggenheim.

CHOOSE YOUR MUSEUM WISELY

MoMA or Met? The real difference

MoMA concentrates emotion around a few major works. The Met allows a more complete reading: Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy, portraits, landscapes and bouquets.

In New York, however, the word "collection" does not mean "visible every day". A painting can be loaned, moved or removed for conservation. This guide indicates the condition displayed by museums on July 18, 2026, but you still need to open the official form before your visit.

Other clarification: Starry Night moma should not be confused with Starry Night on the Rhône, kept at the Musée d'Orsay.

Which museum to choose?

If your time is limited, decide based on experience rather than proximity alone.

Met Fifth Avenue The Cypress and Wheat field with cypress Richest and most varied set 3 to 5 hours The Van Goghs are distributed between several rooms
Guggenheim Mountains in Saint-Rémy A strong work in the Thannhauser collection 1:30 a.m. to 2 a.m Presence in collection does not guarantee exhibition

MoMA: seeing the image become universal

Starry Night and The Olives are marked "on view" in gallery 501 on the artist's official page. They form an exceptional duo: recomposed sky and observed landscape, both painted in Saint-Rémy in 1889.

MoMA also lists online the Portrait of Joseph Roulin, drawing Sorrow, a lithograph of Potato eaters and one Portrait of Doctor Gachet (man with a pipe). Their presence in the room varies.

Effective order: go directly up to the fifth floor at the opening, first look at the two Van Goghs, then go back down chronologically towards Cézanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Picasso.

The Met: the great Van Gogh course

1000 Fifth Avenue · 82nd Street

The Met allows us to understand Van Gogh in groups. Galleries 822 and 825 bring together several landscapes and paintings from Arles; gallery 099 notably hosts the late bouquets indicated by the official files.

Start with the great landscapes of Saint-Rémy, then compare Parisian flowers from 1887 to bouquets from 1890. End with portraits and ordinary objects: shoes, books, faces.

Not to be missed: the matter of Wheat field with cypress. Digital reproductions show composition; only the canvas can measure the thickness, repeats and direction of the keys.

THIRD STEP

The Guggenheim

The museum preserves Mountains in Saint-Rémy in the Thannhauser collection. This is a great reason to add Frank Lloyd Wright's building - provided you check that the canvas is actually hung.

A more punctual presence

Unlike the Met, the Guggenheim is not a large Van Gogh panorama. Its strength lies in a precise canvas and in the dialogue it maintains with Cézanne, Gauguin, Picasso and the beginnings of modernism.

Mountains in Saint-Rémy, painted in July 1889, transforms the Alpilles into masses compressed by thick contours. The touch does not simply imitate rock: it restores the pressure and energy of the relief.

Tip: consult the work page then the hanging of the Thannhauser collection. If the painting is not in the room, keep the Guggenheim for its architecture and temporary exhibitions.

RECOMMENDED ROUTE

One or two days?

The MoMA and Met are only a few kilometers apart, but each deserves time. The best route avoids turning the Van Goghs into a simple checklist.

1

Morning · MoMA

Arrival around 10:20 a.m. Fifth floor first, Starry Night and The Olives, then modern collection until 1 p.m.

2

Route · Central Park

Subway or walk to the Upper East Side. For a visual break, cross south of Central Park before reaching Fifth Avenue.

3

Afternoon · Met

Entrance after 2 p.m. European galleries, Van Gogh as a priority, then comparison with Millet, Delacroix, the Impressionists and Gauguin.

Our recommendation: dedicate a day to MoMA and a second to the Met if you like to look slowly. The same day remains possible, but we must limit each museum and give up a large part of the collections.

At the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA. The museum reports it in gallery 501 as of July 18, 2026. Check the official file before traveling.

Which museum in New York has the most Van Gogh?

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers the richest and most varied pictorial ensemble. MoMA has fewer works, but retains Starry Night.

Not necessarily. Hangings, loans and conservation campaigns modify the visible selection. Consult each sheet marked "On view".

Does the Guggenheim still exhibit Montagnes in Saint-Rémy?

No. The work belongs to the Thannhauser collection, but its presentation may vary. Check the sheet and the current hanging.

Can we do MoMA and Met in the same day?

Yes, starting at MoMA at the opening and limiting the visit before joining the Met. Two days are still preferable to see the collections without running.
