Rembrandt's palette
Earths, lead white, deep reds and a blue of glass that has often turned brown: understanding Rembrandt's colors means looking at the painter, the material and the time at the same time.

A limited palette, but never poor
Rembrandt constructs his warm tones with yellow, red and brown earths, vermilion, red lacquers and lead white. Black is used as much to mix as to darken. Smalt, the main blue of its palette in The Night Watch, could also produce colored purples, greens and browns. The result depends less on the number of pigments than on their superposition, their transparency and the thickness of the paste.
Pigments and their functions
This working palette brings together the materials regularly identified in Rembrandt's paintings. The shades displayed are modern visual cues: a historical pigment changes according to its particle size, its binder, its mixture, the thickness of the layer and its aging.
Lead white

A pigment is never a simple label
Rembrandt exploits physical properties. An opaque white builds relief; a transparent lacquer warms a shadow; the smalt gives texture and also accelerates drying. The choice therefore concerns the color, but also the manufacturing of the painting.

How Rembrandt makes a warm tone
It does not apply a "Rembrandt color" coming out of a tube. Heat results from a succession of operations that circulate brown, red, yellow and gray.
Prepare
A colored background already provides a warm average value and avoids starting from a raw white.
Model
Earths, black and white quickly establish masses and halftones.
Reheat
Vermilion or red lacquer enriches skin tones, fabrics and shadows without making everything red.
Hang
More opaque and thicker highlights advance a sleeve, a forehead or a piece of jewelry.

The Night Watch is not one painting almost black
Research from the Rijksmuseum shows that smalt is abundant in the canvas. Rembrandt uses it for blue, but also in purple, green and brown mixtures. Much of this blue glass has lost its color: certain areas which today appear sober were once more chromatic.

Palette adapts to subject
The painter does not distribute the same colors in an official portrait, a biblical scene or a late self-portrait. The range remains recognizable, but its temperature, contrast and thickness change.

The Anatomy Lesson
The pale body serves as a luminous standard. Around, the blacks of the clothes are not flat: white collars, skin tones and small warm touches connect the faces to the anatomical center.

The range combines warm skin, muted reds, folded greens and golden highlights. Wealth is born from small colorful accents on a large envelope of brown tones.

The Trustees
A seemingly simple harmony becomes very mobile: the red of the carpet and woodwork heats the whites, while the blacks accommodate halftones which separate each silhouette.

The skin is neither beige nor uniformly pink. White, ocher, red, brown and gray alternate depending on the body plane, light and shadow temperature.

The brown of the background and the black of the costume magnify the face. A little white, ocher and red is enough: chromatic restraint reinforces the comparison with old portraits.

The Rapture of Europe
The blues, greens, reds and golds remind us that Rembrandt is not condemned to brown. It reduces their saturation and connects them with a common golden light.
Why does the palette look browner today?
There is no single cause. Pigments, binders, varnishes, cleanings and lighting all influence the color we see.
The blue becomes dull
In oil, cobalt glass may discolor. A garment or background designed with a blue component then appears gray or brown.
The reds are losing their strength
Cochineal, madder or brazil wood lacquers are transparent and vulnerable. Their weakening reduces the depth of fabrics and shadows.
A yellow layer warms everything up
An old varnish can yellow and reduce the gaps between blue, green, gray and brown. A restoration therefore greatly modifies our reading, without "repainting" the work.
From golden portrait to late material
These works show how the same family of pigments produces different climates depending on the mixture, the degree of contrast and the quantity of material.






How to read a palette without inventing pigments
A visible color does not automatically identify a material. Two different pigments can produce a similar shade; the same pigment can change with mixing and aging. Scientific analysis remains essential.
What the instruments reveal
Macro-XRF maps chemical elements: mercury, for example, signals vermilion, cobalt directs towards smalt. Reflectance spectroscopy distinguishes families of materials according to the light they absorb and refer. X-ray diffraction identifies crystal structures and can separate several forms of lead white. Finally, a microscopic section shows the actual order of the layers.
No method is enough alone. Researchers cross-reference maps, samples, microscopic observation, radiography and material history to differentiate original pigment, chemical transformation and posterior retouching.
Three Rembrane ranges
One reproduction dark benefits from being installed under soft, oriented light. Avoid a white spot that is too violent: it crushes colored blacks and creates reflections on the darkest passages.

What colors did Rembrandt use?
Its palette includes lead white, lead-tin yellow, ochres and other earths, vermilion, red lacquers, smalt, azurite and bone or ivory black. The list varies depending on the works and periods.
Why are Rembrandt's paintings so brown?
Soils and hot mixtures play a major role, but the current appearance is also influenced by the discoloration of smalt and lacquers, the aging of varnishes and the history of restorations.
Was Rembrandt using blue?
Yes. Smalt is even described by the Rijksmuseum as the most important blue in its palette The Night Watch. Rembrandt also added it to greens, purples and browns.
What red do we find in his works?
It uses opaque vermilion and several transparent red lacquers, notably from cochineal, madder or, in certain identified cases, brazil wood.
How does he paint skin tones?
By mixtures and superpositions of white, ocher, red, brown and sometimes black. Shadows remain colored; lights may become more opaque and thicker.
Was he using a very limited palette?
The number of pigments available in the 17th century was reduced compared to modern times, but Rembrandt multiplied the effects thanks to mixtures, glazes, undercoats, textures and contrasts.
Can you reproduce your palette exactly today?
Pigment families can be studied, but historical materials present toxic risks and specific behaviors. A reproduction modern must favor secure equivalents and aim for color relationships rather than a literal recipe.
Does a photograph faithfully reproduce its colors?
Not totally. Lighting, calibration, screen and capture change tones. The reproductions clearly show the general organization, but less the transparencies, relief and variations depending on the angle.
